The LA Chargers played in the very first AFL Championship game, losing to the Houston Oilers 24-16.
Their fans only have a 22 minute Jet ride from SD to LA. By the time ya get relaxed you're landing.

There must be a 1000 football teams in SOCAL, if talking HS/JC's/all divisions of college ball/NFL. I can't think of any other region with that much football, that can't be good for a pro team.
Arian Foster
Rashann Salaam...Heisman
Ricky Williams...Heisman
Reggie Bush....Heisman
Marcus Allen...Heisman
Terrel Davis
All went to HS.s in San Diego. I saw Marcus Allen when he was a QB at Lincoln. talk about the black side of town, whoa!
Long Beach Poly has had 16 NFLers only a school in Florida has had more.
My point, a ton of football in SOCAL.
California choked full of JC's/HS's.
