View Full Version : Mavs: Parsons has damaged cartilage in knee

Parsons told ESPN.com that he has damaged cartilage in the knee, which got worse when he played in Game 1. He said he aggravated the knee injury when he landed after a dunk in transition during the second quarter.

Parsons acknowledged rushing back to play in Game 1 against his former team, including receiving a pain-killing injection two days before the series started.

"It's the playoffs, man," said Parsons, who had 10 points on 5-of-15 shooting and six rebounds in the playoff loss. "You've got to be really, really hurt to not play in a playoff game, in my eyes. I thought with everything I had done to prepare myself, I could get through it. It didn't work out. Didn't feel well. Didn't play well. But it was a risk I had to take."

Parsons missed the final six regular-season games, suffering a setback during a workout before a game in Los Angeles less than a week before the playoffs opened. He still pushed to play in the postseason opener despite knowing that he'd likely need postseason surgery and was far less than 100 percent.

Parsons admits that part of his motivation for playing in Game 1 was the opportunity to face his former team at Toyota Center, where fans -- who still have hard feelings over his departure -- boo every time he touches the ball.

"If it was anybody but Houston, I honestly probably wouldn't have played in Game 1," Parsons said. "It just sucks. I've never been hurt and I want to play and I can't.

"It never got better. It's just so frustrating right now because obviously I want to be playing with my team. I want to be out there. The playoffs are the most fun time of the year and I was obviously looking forward to this series against Houston. And it's all taken away from me. It's devastating and I want to be out there. I've tried everything. I've tried every possible thing to try and play. Rehab and rest, different treatments, and nothing's worked."

:lol These athletes inject themselves full of pain-killers, and then wonder why their bodies aren't healing.

Hey! Maybe it's because pain is supposed to be a useful signal of bodily damage! And maybe if you turn off that signal, the damage gets worse because you aren't aware of it! :lol

The silver lining here for Mavfan is that Parsons will now be less likely to opt out of that 16M option he has for the third year of his contract.

Easy call. Not a contract year, and rondo was the first and worst quit. Next year be could be the best player for them mavs. Stat padder in chief

If Ellis and Rondo both leave, Parsons could possibly be a 20/6/4 player next year with more opportunities. Personally, I thought the team in general played better when he was getting more of a role in running the offense. Hopefully he gets healthy.

If you are relying on Parson's being a main cog you are really in trouble. He's a good 3rd option, really solid 4th. He's not great at anything and seems to think he's better than he is based on all the little comments you read from him.

No one said anything about him being a main cog, although by the way the league is these days, and depending on an individuals definition of "main cog", a 3rd option most definitely can be considered a main cog. If you are talking about him being the centerpiece, of course he's not fit for that. But if you are talking about him being one of a group of centerpieces, he certainly can fit that bill.

Regardless, the only thing said was that he can be more productive, and meet higher expectations when Monta and Rondo aren't dominating the ball 98% of the time.

sure it does

now the mavs lose in 4 or 5, instead of losing in 5 or 6

I guess what I took from your comment was his stats would improve. Sure he would "produce" more with ball dominant guards gone but that is just because of usage rate. I don't think the Mavs will be better suited to win though, even with his increased production.

Why would they trade him? He's a young live body who is passably attractive. He is the franchise skipping stone from HOF Dirk and.........the future.

Do you think Ellis still walks?

Sure. Mavs aren't going to overpay for a guy in his 30's, clearly losing his athleticism, and ready to mail it in.
