ORLEANS -- With star forward Anthony Davis eligible for a contract extension this summer, Pelicans officials plan to be aggressive as possible in presenting him with a maximum five-year deal that could approach $140 million, according to league sources

.The exact figures will depend on how much the NBA salary cap actually rises, but sources told ESPN.com that the Pelicans indeed intend to present Davis with the biggest offer they can once the window for negotiations opens July 1.The Pelicans would then have until Oct. 31 to convince Davis to sign a five-year deal that makes him their designated player.Davis, 22, just joined Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Wilt Chamberlain and Bob McAdoo as the only players in league history ‎to average at least 30 points and 10 rebounds in their first four NBA playoff games.

The Pelicans' season ended with Saturday night's Game 4 home loss to Golden State, but the Pelicans surprised many pundits by beating the defending champion San Antonio Spurs on the final day of the regular season to clinch a playoff berth ahead of the Oklahoma City Thunder with a 45-37 record.‎Because Davis was elected by the fans to start in February's All-Star Game, and since he is expected to earn All-NBA first-team honors when voting results are announced in the coming days, New Orleans can start his max deal at 30 percent of the league's salary cap as opposed to a mere 25 percent. And thanks to the league's most recent salary cap projections -- which will spike dramatically when money starts flowing in from the NBA's new nine-year, $24 billion TV deal that kicks in starting with the 2016-17 season -- Davis can thus be presented with a five-year pact that will eventually top $30 million annually and potentially approach $140 million in total value. If Davis signs the five-year extension, it would also start in 2016-17 and run through his 28th birthday.Davis, of course, ‎would have the option of signing a shorter extension with the Pelicans to preserve some flexibility in his future options in free agency.-Marc Stein*

I'm not certain, but wouldn't that be the largest contract to date at 28m/yr average?

He should sign a 2-yr max and then sign a 5-yr max deal in 2017 after the new TV deal where he can make a lot more money.

The new deal starts in 2016 when a Davis extension would begin. That's why his five year max would be around 140m while a five year deal this summer for KawhI would be around 100m. The Davis extension would be calculated based on the 2016 cap.

I though there were larger (maybe Duncan, Garnett or Shaq) but those were over 7 years. So it would probably be the highest per year like you said.

My guess is that the TV networks, NIKE, and the league office are strategizing about how to get Davis to LA or NY in a couple of years.

AD has no future with the Pelicans. He needs to somehow make his way to SA.

If the Spurs can get him for the minimum, why not?

As long as he doesn't end up a Laker,,,all is good.

A lot of Spur fans feel entitled to Davis...

A lot of Spur fans feel entitled to Davis...

Which is strange, considering no elite FA has ever chosen to come to SA :lol

Unless something drastic happens in NO, I'm pretty confident that Davis won't be there in 3 years. By then, there will be a new crop of "contenders" and he'll likely have choose between one of them, tbh.

NO better get rid of that retarded coach and try to put a decent team around him. He's already a top 3-5 player and he's nowhere near his peak :wow

And he's younger than Kawhi. That shit is nuts. I really hope AD gets to play for a long time and is never derailed by shitty injuries. Some special basketball moments will be seen with him the future

Spurs fans need to focus on a guy that is under the radar and that is Andre Drummond,,,that kid is unbelievable and doesn't have the media hype like Davis.

Yet a lot of you guys are thinking he'll turn away 28m/yr and take a bus to San Antonio. I don't see the logic behind it, he might play a little like Duncan, but he's not Timothy.

If Davis was smart he would get out of the franchise the first chance he gets or else he is going to waste his career going no-where

Not saying he should come to SA but Davis should leave NO.
