I rarely eat at Mexican restaurants since I still have my mom's cooking whenever I visit, but I'd say my two favorites in the NW side are probably Jalisco Grill on DeZavala and La Fogata on Vance Jackson. Mamacita's is ok, Chuy's sucks.

Iron Mexican is correct, though, you don't have to go to the barrios of Evergreen or Big Bad Hazard to get great authentic Mexican food anymore--they're great spots all over SoCal that you don't have to waste time with Chipotle or the even worse Cafe Rio.

I have not made it myself. I, though, have seen it being made because I grew up with a bunch of Mexican friends and their abuelas would make it and they'd always hook our family up with it. I would imagine it to be not aesthetically pleasing since the tamarind fruit isn't all that great looking to begin with.

I have always felt mole is incredible when it's good but that most places don't do it very well. I never get it at restaurants though, just make it at home using Rick Bayless' recipe. It's great in Mexico but I haven't found a place in the US that does it really well, and have never been to Chicago so never tried it at one of Bayless' restaurants.

The chile and meat are good but the birote is the really thick, hard kind that's enclosed on the sides...and they cut it through the middle vertically instead of horizontally so for most bites the birote taste overwhelms the meat taste. I would use a thinner birote and cut through the middle horizontally like this:

Which the traditional mexican diet from mexico is more healthier and more whole based on corn tortilla, boiled spiced bean, guac and rice. hardly any cheese cept goat cheese sparingly. And usually its either goat cheese or meat as the protein, not both.

That's why you see these beans come up across the border and no longer look like beans but human sized greasy smelly footballs.

But I thought El Chivito was pretty badass, loved the bread and carnitas. I guess because I'm white the guy looked at me like I was nuts when I ordered the extra hot. :lol It was hot but not overly so even with the whole bag dumped on the bread and the insides. Good barbacoa too. I'll definitely be back there, though I'll still try Ro-Ho Pork sometime too, I'll just make sure to phone the order in next time.
