Unmanned aircraft, equipped with thermal imaging, help search for flooding survivors
BATON ROUGE, La. (CNN) -- Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) are helping search for survivors in the New Orleans area, State Rep. Steve Scalise told CNN.
The UAVs began flying Wednesday, although they arrived at the Naval Air station in Bell Chase, La. five days ago. "We've been trying to get the red tape broken since Friday," Scalise said.
The unmanned aircraft have thermal imaging, which will aid in spotting survivors at night. The UAVs, which can fly 500 to 25,000 feet above ground, will fly out of Bell Chase and search Orleans and St. Bernard parishes. (Posted: 1:55 p.m.)
