Mayor Phil Hardberger and USAA Chairman and CEO Robert G. Davis announced the creation of the San Antonio Hurricane Relief Fund today at City Hall. USAA will kick-start the fund with a $1 million donation.

Residents interested in making monetary donations that will stay in San Antonio to help with short- and long-term relief efforts can do so by Internet at saafdn.org.

The tax-deductible donations also can be mailed to the San Antonio Hurricane Relief Fund in care of the San Antonio Area Foundation, 110 Broadway, Suite 230, San Antonio 78205.

"We have not had a committee, a group or a repository for the community to interface with who want to give money or goods," Hardberger said of the decision to create a fund.

Hardberger said because of an appearance he made on CNN, money has been coming into his office and the city, which will now be put in the fund. Law firm Lineberger Goggan Blair & Sampson donated $10,000, and the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce presented a stack of checks and cash totaling nearly $32,000.

The fund's committee is made up of area leaders from the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, San Antonio Food Bank, United Way, the San Antonio Area Foundation and the city.

The committee met for the first time Tuesday to assess the needs of the relief organizations.

"It is clear that what the community needs to provide is money, simply money," Davis said. "These agencies have buying power; they can stretch a dollar better than we can. They know exactly what they need and how much they need."

Donors making contributions to the relief agencies such as the Salvation Army or Red Cross can specify that the money stay in the area; otherwise it could be applied to national relief efforts, he added.

The Food Bank is still accepting non-perishable food items that can be dropped off at any Goodwill location. Although officials said clothing is not needed at this time, those who wish to donate clothes can take them to Goodwill.
