Pistons want to sign Prince to contract extension

AUBURN HILLS -- Because the Pistons shot 43.7 percent in the playoffs last season, it was assumed that one of the first orders of offseason business would be to acquire a proven perimeter shooter.

Former coach Larry Brown campaigned for one before he left, and so have fans.

But president Joe Dumars had a different plan.

The Pistons on Tuesday formally introduced their two newest acquisitions -- longtime center Dale Davis and 26-year-old swingman Maurice Evans, neither of whom would be considered a proven perimeter shooter.

"I didn't so much think I needed to address the shooting need," Dumars said. "What we needed was somebody who could come in and play the two-three (shooting guard-small forward) spot. If he could've been a pure shooter, great. But if not, we still needed somebody to give us minutes there. I like the guys we've got."

In Dumars' defense, he made a pitch to the best free-agent shooter on the market -- Michael Finley. The Pistons offered the full mid-level exception (starting at $5 million) and were rebuked. Finley didn't like the idea of coming off the Pistons' bench and signed with the Spurs.

Instead, Dumars used the money to sign two players, each of whom is expected to be in the rotation next season. As for the shooting issue, Dumars, for now, is counting on internal growth from the likes of Tayshaun Prince, Carlos Delfino, Carlos Arroyo and even Darko Milicic.

"Every hole on your team cannot be addressed by just going out and acquiring," Dumars said. "You have to have some internal growth, too. That has to be a part of it. We have some good, young players on our roster. You have to let your young guys grow."

Dumars also is counting on coach Flip Saunders' more liberating offensive style to create more scoring.

"I don't see any holes," Saunders said. "I think all the pieces are there."

Prince update

Dumars, now that he's back from a trip to Turkey, has restarted negotiations on a contract extension for Prince. Dumars planned to speak to Prince's agent, Bill Duffy, Tuesday night.

"I think we will get something done long-term," Dumars said. "We are going to keep him here. Tay wants that, I want that and Duffy wants that. We'll get something done."

Prince, who is beginning his fourth season with the Pistons, is expected to get a five-year extension worth between $45 million and $50 million. The Pistons have until the end of October to sign Prince to an extension. If they don't, Prince would become a restricted free agent next summer.

I thought that he created serious matchup problems for the spurs with those long arms. He's a pretty decent player.

Prince is a really good defender and he's getting better offensively (14,7 ppg 48,7% FG vs 10,3 ppg 46,7% FG last year)

Prince is a worthwhile investment for them I think. He's a guy that could be in the running for DPOY in a few years. But Batman is right, he faded pretty badly in the finals. Ginobili worked him over pretty good, but I can hardly blame Prince for not being able to guard a guy that no one in the NBA has an answer for yet. But on the offensive end he could have done a lot of damage to Ginobili in the post, but failed to try to exploit that size advantage. I think there was a general lack of offensive aggression in Pistons frontcourt except for maybe Dice's efforts.

I would have loved to have Prince be the man to take over for Bowen.

You guys have to know one thing about last year...Prince played the most minutes on the team, and 11th most in the league37.1mpg and 3 ,039minutes over 82 games. He played more minutes than the much more conditioned Hamilton(19th). Tony Parker was the closest to Tay, at 36th, with 2,735 minutes over 80 games. I think he was simply burned out in the Finals. He also logged 801.8 minutes in the playoffs. Roughly 3,841 minutes played over the course of last season/playoffs.

That is why we got Evans. He is bigger than Tayshaun and can defend, plus he has a decent shot. Maxiell can help against bigger small forwards like Artest and Corliss Williamson. We are hoping the new additions will lower starter minutes, so they all dont play 2500+ each a season.

Prince would have been an ideal Bowen replacement.

Whoa don't get me wrong. Great defender, can hit the three pretty reasonable overall, but I still don't think he deserves 9-10mil per. Thats getting up near max money, but hey theres a lot of Cs getting close to that figure with half the talent. In 3 years the entire league will be in cap hell the way everyone is handing out contracts.

My assessment of Prince's possible contract:

• Slightly above his skill level.
• At his market value.

All things considered, its pretty fair. He's young, getting better, can do EVERYTHING, and should play better now that he has a decent sub.

Guys, don't read too far into the way he played against you guys. He was coming off an ankle injury in the sixers series, and he is not used to playing the kind of minutes he had to (because he had no backup with Corliss traded, and Delfino hurt). His body is clearly not made for 2 years straight of over 100 games per season at 40 minutes per game.

He was tearing it up during the 2nd half of the year untill he got that ankle injury. He was easily our best player from January through the first few games of the playoffs. He was flat out awful in 90% of the last 3 playoff series.

Now, with Maurice Evans, and a healthy Carlos Delfino he should be getting 30-32 minutes per game or so, and will be much more effective. 9 Mil per year on average is a good deal deal for him considering his age, and the type of player he is.

Prince is in the top 8 or 9 true SF's in the league, that does not include the shooting guards who play SF like LeBron James and Paul Pierce.

^^I agree.. the dude is a top 5 defender, and has an underrated shot as well ... lucky for us he disappeared in the Finals .. the salary may not justify his talent, but it sure justifies the role he plays on the Pistons
