You'd have been better off just posting the opening intro. Classic, timeless. If they put the NBA back on NBC, they would likely still use it.

Now post the TNT from around the turn of the century, that was better than the current music.

Ah man, NBA on NBC was something else. The theme song, the commentating, the overall production was like HBO compared to shitty Showtime. ABC\ESPN just can't get it right...I wish they could but they just cant.

The Dome mostly sucked compared to the AT&T Center and Hemisfair Arena, but this game was the exception. The Alamodome has these hollow plastic seats that make a lot of noise when you thump them, and it sounded like half the arena was beating on the seat in front of them when Stoudamire was shooting free throws with 12 seconds left. He missed one and looked like he was about to cry when he went to his bench for the timeout right after. It was extremely loud when he was shooting those, way louder than I ever heard Hemisfair even.

Tickets were so cheap at the Alamodome too, since no one bought season tickets due to the availability of single game tickets for any game. I paid $16.50 for pretty nice lower level seats to go to that game. No way the Spurs could have survived playing in that building much longer though with those kind of ticket prices.

Probably because the Pistons, Rockets, and Spurs didn't have wing players with the skill/athleticism and aesthetically pleasing games of Jordan and Pippen. The Bulls had the best of both worlds, great defense and two exciting players and a fuckin headcase in Rodman :lol As much as I liked Tim Duncan the Spurs didn't get truly exciting until Ginobili joined the team because he was completely unpredictable and fun to watch.

Despite the low scores, the most exciting athletes on earth were playing, pop culture icons even. When they started retiring, so too went much of the NBA's fanbase with them.

Side-by-side today's game is many levels deeper than the 90s game. That said, 90s ball is in a vacuum because of MJ. He existence brought it to its absolute peak in popularity, ratings, pop culture, merchandise, which also catapulted the superstars he was playing against.

This is why all kinds of double standards exist when it comes to 90s ball, ie not describing the 73-78 jazz bull finals game as "unwatchable, horrible, boring" basketball.

Jordan is actually a product of the popularity of, to name the primary pair, the popularity of Larry Bird and Magic Johnson and other big stars of the 80's. Jordan just took the baton from them and raised the popularity of the NBA to the next level (though he did fine himself in the 80's as an icon). The rest fed off of him but please, Barkley, Stockton/Malone, Ewing, Larry Johnson, David Robinson, Chris Mullin, Tim and Penny Hardaway, etc... were all big time and celebrated players in their own right even if their legacies aren't what they looked like they were going to be.

That's a bit too simple. You don't just "take the baton" else someone else would do it.

Jordan had something you almost never see, a combination of fearless confidence in himself before the play that you could read in his demeanor and the obvious ability to make the play happen. Today we see "stars" shirk that spotlight when it burns to hot, like we saw with the Clippers in the last series in that pivotal turnaround game, Blake, Paul and Jordan.. none wanting the ball. These are stars, all stars, superstars even. Then, after the play, Jordan didn't act like he just won a championship (unless he just did) with all the faggotry and school yard dances and antics you see today like these cats have never scored the ball in their lives. We're talking about guys who score 40 points on some nights, celebrating a 2 point shot as if it means something. All that "cooking it up" and shimmying and all the other queer stuff, show that confidence before the play, not after. Kobe tried, but he was a beta trying to fit into the role of the alpha. Mike never struggled with his image vs teammates. He was never in doubt.

[facepalm] Everything you said about Jordan was true. He was popular and revolutionized the game but was hardly the only reason for the explosive popularity of the NBA in the 90's. For example, there's a 30-for-30 on the Pacers-Knicks rivalry from when Jordan was either retired or barely visible in the NBA.

Resume is beside the point. His approach is what people remember most. If another player led his team to the same record, same number of wins, same 2 year hiatus.. that person would probably not receive the attention Jordan received. During that era, he was peerless. Just look at the original Dream Team, other than Magic, Bird it's full of a bunch of 0fers.
