HEAT & Spurs to stage hurricane katrina relief game

Teams To Jointly Donate All Proceeds To Benefit Victims Of Hurricane Katrina

SAN ANTONIO – The Miami HEAT, the World Champion San Antonio Spurs, the NBA and the National Basketball Players Association today announced their plans to stage an exhibition game between the Miami HEAT and the San Antonio Spurs to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The game will be played in Miami at the AmericanAirlines Arena on Monday, October 10, 2005 at 7:30PM, and will feature several up-close and personal experiences for fans. Prior to the game, players will greet fans at the door and following the contest, fans will have the opportunity to get some of their favorite player’s autographs. To generate the largest possible contribution, all tickets will be sold at the 2005-06 regular season individual game ticket prices, with HEAT Season Ticket Holders receiving the first opportunity to purchase tickets.

As the host team, the HEAT will donate all proceeds from the event to the efforts to aid the victims of Hurricane Katrina. All revenue from ticket sales, concessions, parking and retail sales will be contributed. In addition, selected service vendors providing the employees who would normally work at the AmericanAirlines Arena on a game night will donate their service fee and all AmericanAirlines Arena employees will donate their time to facilitate the game. The contribution will be made to the American Red Cross and a to be determined charity on behalf of the HEAT, Spurs, the NBA and the NBPA. Representatives from both organizations will be on hand at the game to receive the contribution.

“For reasons that are close to home and knowing what our citizens have gone through, we as an organization will do just about anything to supply comfort, compassion, money and anything else we can to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina,” said HEAT President Pat Riley. “The Spurs and the HEAT getting together to put on this exhibition to raise as much money as we can for the victims is an indication of what both organizations and the NBA is all about.”

“The Spurs players and staff are eager to do what we can to help in the relief efforts following the devastation of Hurricane Katrina,” said Spurs General Manager R.C. Buford. “This game will give everyone associated with our organization the chance to contribute their time and talents in the name of raising money for those affected by this tragedy. We are honored to participate in this event and look forward to the opportunity to give back to NBA fans throughout the Gulf Coast region.”

HEAT Season Ticket Holders will have the opportunity to purchase their seat locations for the game starting Friday, September 9 though Wednesday, September 14. Tickets can be purchased online via HEAT.com or in person at the AmericanAirlines Arena Ticket Office during the hours of 10AM-5PM Monday through Friday. Following this exclusive purchase opportunity for HEAT Season Ticket Holders, tickets will be made available to the general public on Monday, September 19 at 10AM via all Ticketmaster outlets, ticketmaster.com, the AmericanAirlines Arena Ticket Office, or by calling 1-800-4NBA-TIX. Ticketmaster has also agreed to waive all fees normally associated with the ticket purchase transaction.

This benefit game continues the many efforts being made by the NBA, its teams and its players to provide assistance to the victims of Hurricane Katrina, and would not be possible without Levy Restaurants, Ticketmaster, American Medical Response and the Ritz Carlton Coconut Grove for their generosity and the City of Miami for graciously donating the services of the Miami Police Department and the Fire/Rescue teams working the game. The HEAT also thanks the San Antonio Spurs organization for their participation in this important endeavor.

Great idea. I think it would have been even cooler to stage this game in S.A., at the Alamodome. That would make is more accessible to the relief victims housed in the Alamo City.

Still a pretty cood deal.

It's good to see the Spurs step up and do something since they got left out of the All Star Game...Props to the Heat as well.

In order to make this a competitive game, they should play the game where the score means something.

They should make it so the final margin of victory determines how much money that the other organization donates to the Red Cross.

For instance, 100K for every point you lose by, to be paid by the players, owners and coaches.

The winning team would donate 1/2 the amt.

Why? They wouldn't be able to fit more people into the arena. How would they make more money?

More Sponsors ( == more money) because the actual game counts for the season and teams will take it seriously ??

Yes, it's a press release that I got from the Spurs in my email.

If I post something, you don't have to worry about the source. The only time I don't put a link is when it's a press release.

Ya know, though, I am tired of the 2005 NBA CHAMPIONS having to be ON THE ROAD for all of these special events.

2005 Katrina relief == IN MIAMI
2005 Christmas == IN DETROIT
2006 MLK day == IN MEMPHIS

It sort of makes you wonder who the defending champs are.

Well it's preseason, so I dunno if people would actually attend. But if it's a regular season than it would sell out.

Doesn't matter whether the teams take the game seriously. What matters is the money raised. People get to see NBA stars and help raise money. Excellent idea.

Wow. That's very cool. Now I wonder...is going to be a preseason like game where the starters play limited minutes?

Still, very cool idea...they should televise it nationally.

Shaq's been doing a lot. I saw him on Access Hollywood (errrrrrr.....I was channel surfing) and he and his wife helped Jaime Foxx coordinate some kind of celebrity auction in Miami that helped raise $600,000.

What does it being pre-season have to do with anything? It's a special event that has nothing to do with the NBA season. :wtf

I'm thinking more like the all-star game. It's to raise money, it's for fun..nobody gets hurt; score somewhere in the 130's for the winner (which will most likely be Miami since their fans are the ones out the $$$$) Should be fun to watch.

i think this continues to show the disprepect which is meeted out by the league to the Champion team.come on the spurs are the champs the game should be played at the SBC center...and another thing is that the spurs the defending champion playing away from home on christmas day..

Aggie Hoopsfan
09-08-2005, 05:16 PM
While normally I would take affront to us playing down there, there is some logic to it...

1. The Heat arena seats more than SBC (though you could argue they could stick it in the Alamodome and put 40K in there)

2. There's more rich/famous people in Miami than SA. It's a fact. I imagine part of that "unique" experience will include many celebs - lots call South Beach home (or at least have a place there).

Now's now the time to be critical, this beats the hell out of the 25K chump change that other teams have been donating :tu

It seems to me that as far as the victims go, it doesn't make a difference where the game is played.

The victims have no money and therefore wouldn't go to the game even if it was here- unless of course a sponsor donated tickets to them.

I am also thinking that the Spurs will do some separate activity for the hurricane victims... like a meet and greet before the open practice or something similar.

As far as bringing in funds, as someone has already said, Miami is the ideal location to have the game.

batman2883
09-08-2005, 06:25 PM
It doesnt matter if its preseason or not the very fact that they are offering a chance to meet and interact with players before the game will make this venue a sell out, plus the token that all the money will be going to charity for the relief of Hurricane Katrina...this was a spectacular idea, i just dont think it should have been done in Miami,

toosmallshoes
09-08-2005, 06:44 PM
If they did it here at the alamodome so the victims of the Hurricane could go to the game, then the victims would be paying money to themselves. it's a fundraiser, so they're having it somewher else. And no way should there be some point system about final score being relevant to the amount of money donated. I know I sure don't want to see any players from either team getting hurt trying to win a scrimmage. This is about great basketball players getting together on the court to help raise money for Katrina victims. All it has to do to raise maximum money is sell out, and they'll do that whether it's a super competitive game or not. I think it's a freakin' awesome idea.
