Why is it when tax cuts and tax abatements for big business result in revenue shortfalls, benefits get cut for the working poor?

PHOENIX (AP) — Facing a $1 billion budget deficit, Arizona's Republican-led legislature has reduced the lifetime limit for welfare recipients to just one year — the shortest window in the nation.

Low-income families on welfare will now have their benefits cut off after just 12 months.

As a result, the Arizona Department of Economic Security will drop at least 1,600 families — including more than 2,700 children — from the state's federally funded welfare program when the budget year begins in July.

The cuts reflect a prevailing mood among the lawmakers in control in Arizona, that welfare, Medicaid and other public assistance programs are crutches that keep the poor from getting back on their feet and achieving their potential.

epitomizes the VRWC/Repug strategy: cut taxes for BigCorp/1% and screw the 99%, and above all screw the 47%.

Well, the GOP now has a lot of laboratories to try out their dumb ideas.

Like "welfare encourages people to be lazy and have babies".

It does, but no where near the scale as most seem to think. The majority of the people who get "welfare" really, truly, need the help.

Senate president's son sodomizes 18 boys, is not charged with sexual assault

Clifton Bennett, 18-year-old son of Arizona state Senate president Ken Bennett (http://www.azleg.state.az.us/MembersPage.asp?Member_ID=63), and his friend, 19-year-old Kyle Wheeler, were charged in January of 18 counts of aggravated assault and 18 counts of kidnapping.

The charges refer to incidents which occurred at a boys' student government leadership skills camp in June of 2005, at which Bennett confesed that he and Wheeler sodomized several 11- to 14-year-old boys with broomsticks and flashlights in 40 separate incidents.

Wheeler has an additional assault charge based on his choking three boys until they passed out.

Yesterday, the pair was offered a plea agreement (http://www.azdailysun.com/articles/2006/04/03/news/local/20060403_local_news_7.txt) that will include no record of sexual assault; they will likely receive 90-day jail sentences, though the judge could reduce the charges and give them no jail time at all.
