View Full Version : Goodfellas - Movie Review

I saw this when it first came out on VHS. We were drinking so it really didn't register much with me. I finally got around to watching it again last night. Forgot that Ray Liotta was actually pretty good in roles like this when he was young and before he got even more lizardy looking. Even though he was the main character, he still seems like a character actor when compared to others in the movie. Robert DeNiro was excellent as was Lorraine Bracco and Paul Sorvino. I never realized that Samuel Jackson was in the movie either. Interesting that 2 hit men come to his door to take him out and shoot him in cold blood ala Pulp Fiction. Sort of.

Anyway, 8.5/10. Maybe a little dated.

Fuck that shit, that movie is an 11/10. Funny watching that movie again after getting used to Lorraine Bracco as Tony Soprano's shrink though.

Yeah...that was interesting. I forgot she was in the movie. When I watched Sopranos, I knew I'd seen her in things but couldn't place her.

But the rating for Goodfellas is 8.5/10. I deducted some points for parts of the score as well.

I also forgot how good Pesci was in this.

Actors end up in perfect roles for them but then get popular and take roles that show that they aren't really that good.

ah. Maybe not. After looking at his filmography, he really didn't take on too much outside of his range. Casino was great also. And My Cousin Vinny was funny as hell.

If you read the book the movie was based on, they actually really tamed Tommy down for the movie.

Fucked up the part where Henry and Tommy DeSimone are walking down the street and Tommy just murders some random old man who passes by for fun.

How long ago did you read it tbh?

I was watching a 30 for 30 on the BC point shaving scandal and the fed prosecutor (who actually played himself in the movie) talks about Henry Hill coming in to testify against Jimmy and it was the point shaving that got him the sentence. At the end of the 30 for 30, they actually had Hill and one of his old associates that he was at odds with. It was a strange add on to the documentary but was interesting.

That's awfully thin, PD. Accepting your premise doesn't he suspect something when he drives in and there aren't a bunch of cars and commotion going on?

& concurrently Jimmy is nervous about the whole thing like he expects this to happen, calling constantly. If he thinks it's iffy he would have discussed that with Tommy and he never woulda went to it.

And again, Tuddy is no match for Tommy. The only other guy there is an old-old timer. Tuddy has no assurance a "serial killer gangster" will be so easily fooled A., and then go so quietly, B.

No. This part stinks. If Jimmy smelled something, Tommy would be informed.

I love in the Sopranos how they have Chris scared as hell when Paulie is driving him to be made, and Paulie tells him to relax and that he's watched too many movies.

Still, it's pretty reasonable that Jimmy would be nervous while still not really knowing anything concrete. The Lucchese family making Tommy would essentially have been a declaration of war against the Gambinos after Batts, and no one wanted that after the war Crazy Joe Gallo started like 10-15 years before the time period of that part of the movie. Surely Jimmy had to know that.

Are you trolling me right now? First off, they drive him straight into a garage in what looks like the back of a big house. Plenty of scenarios where he wouldn't see the other cars even if they were there. Second, Jimmy isn't nervous, you stupid fucking twat, he's excited. Henry literally explains that. And finally, Tuddy has a gun and he could've taken him out at any point but luckily for him he didn't have to till they get to that room. They aren't getting into a fist fight, dumbass

My favorite scene is the one where Henry's taking his girl on a date(was it their first? Idk) . The scene starts on the street, then they maneuver through the line waiting to get in restaurant, and make their way towards the back entrance. Henry pays off the security guy and they continue through the kitchen to the dinner floor. They sit down, and the show starts. And through all that, not one cut. Fantastic film.

Little parts too:::

***when they throw the post man into the back seat of the car he's completely air born.

***the patrons along the edges of the restaurant/lounge watching as Tommy deals with the owner and waiter. They're in the dark & shadows but Scorsese lights them just enough so we see their ease/unease, etc.

***when Tommy admonishes "Anthony" off camera for butting in as Tommy is dealing with Henry. "You're right." is all Anthony says and it comes from off camera.

***the way the F.B.I. guy at the end when he's sitting down with Henry & Karen when they're about to roll over and she asks him if she'll ever see her parents again. He says "no" but nods his head. I have to laugh at that one.
