Is there any way to lower a player's current salary?

like for instance, a player is given a contract extension, can it change the overall deal and lower the current year of the deal, similar to how the NFL does it?

Contracts for fewer than four seasons cannot be renegotiated. A contract cannot be renegotiated between March 1 and June 30 of any year. Only teams under the cap can renegotiate a contract, and the salary in the then-current season can be increased only to the extent that the team has room under the cap. Raises in subsequent years are limited to 10.5% of the salary in the first renegotiated season. The renegotiation may not contain a signing bonus. Contracts cannot be renegotiated downward (players can't take a "pay cut" in order to create salary cap room for the team) or to contain fewer seasons.

The Spurs could use the stretch provision on Parker, waiving him and paying his remaining $43.3M in guaranteed salary over the next 7 years. I think that would lower his cap number from the current $13.4M to $6.2M. However, it leaves a hole in the lineup and damages fan relations (the fans still by and large love Tony; ST is hardly a representative sample).

I am a fan of parker....but I dont know the contract side of the game so I asked....I figured some of you did know.

assuming Tony Parker completely takes one for the team.

To me this is rational for the Spurs only if the $3,791,359 (or some lesser amount) permits the acquisition of a difference maker. Otherwise, I don't think the Spurs would want Parker on the books for 2018-19.

To me this is rational for Parker only if Tony believes the difference maker significantly ups the chance for another ring AND/OR Parker believes that he wouldn't get a vet minimum deal in 2018-19.
