I'm considering it myself. Unfortunately, the best case scenario for me involves driving down the road a few miles to a bus stop, riding a bus for 90 minutes (including 2 transfers)...walking approximately 1/4 mile to my building...and then doing the reverse in the evening. I'd have to catch the morning bus at 5:30 AM and I wouldn't get home until almost 6 PM.

Later schedules result in longer bus rides.

But I'm considering it...

i remember my cousin wanted to take the bus from my house to work once. it was going to take 1/4 mile walk to the stop, 2 1/2s on the bus and then 1/2 mile to work! then all over again! haha... it was only 15 miles away!

I've ridden the train/bus to work for 2 1/2 years, but recently I've also made an effort to carpool more often when going out at night (if it's a logical distance).

For example, four of us took one car out to Ft Worth last weekend for a concert... We probably would've taken separate cars a few months ago.

Personally I'd never go back to the bus. I rode it to school, work, and walked, years ago. No matter how high prices go, I'll pay up, there is nothing worse than catching the line up to MLK and Pecan Valley on a weekend night after working a double.

I do drive somewhat less though. I cant tell whether that is due to the prices or flat out laziness now.

There is this interview that stands out a few weeks ago. A disabled woman at the bustop was interviewed and was questioned whether she appreciates the bus at times like these. She responded, "It's 105 degrees right now. What's to appreciate? The bus is always late, it's hot, I have to look our for rain at times, and in the winter the cold wind hurts my face and bones. I'd give anything to pay 3 dollars a gallon for gas so I can come and go as I please. I wish people would know how blessed they are to not be forced to take the bus everywhere."

She had a point. If you've ever taken the bus for a living, those comments hit close to ohome.

Before I started my new job in April (now my gas is paid by my company THANK GOD), I was already consolidating trips and eliminating others. Before, I would hop in my car and make seperate trips for everything. Things like going to the grocery store once a week instead of 3 times or running all of my errands during the same trip instead of multiple trips.

Indeed. Having a vehicle gives you freedom we take for granted; go where you want, when you want.

If you've ever taken the bus for a living, those comments hit close to home.I did the last time I lived in Cali -- the climate is much better suited for waiting outside, that's for sure. I'd take the bus here if it didn't take an hour and two transfers to travel the eight miles to work. As with anything in Austin, east-west bus routes are skimpy. I'd have no problem at all if I worked downtown.

We're moving the business in a month and the new location may have a shower, so biking could become an option again.

I havn't talken the bus this week, but Emo has.
He says there are definatly more people on in the morning (most likely going to work).
It takes him 40 mins and 2 tranfers to get to his job on SanPedro. But we have the BigPass so It's $20 a month flat. He has to walk a bit ot the bus stop near our house, but the bus drops him practicly at he front door of his job.
I nthe evening it depends on what tiem he leaves work - but it;s about hte same # of people.... but in the morning it's hard to find a seat.

That bus pass is a sweet deal. I had one and Jess had one when she worked downtown.

I can't believe I'd complain about forking over the 25 cents I had to pay in high school with my student discount card.

I've noticed a lot more people on the bus. It is actually kind of funny when you see the people that have never ridden the bus and look all kinds of nervous when they get on and are paranoid about missing their stop.

I think the Bus Schedules will improve quite a bit the next time they update them. If they are getting a lot more use I woudln't be suprised to see them add services that better fit commuters.

I rode the bus to Kelly USA the other night and it only took me about an hour from Bitters and 281. I only had to transfer once. Thats a pretty good distance in the amount of time.

Living near downtown helps alot, too. There are 8 different lines that pass within 2 blocks. It helps having options.

And I'd have to have to take a lineup bus to the eastside. Damn, I don't envy that one bit.

Oh, some of you may want to check with your employers. I get bus passes for Jess and myself for 5 bucks a month through Valero.

My mother works there and while she's not taking the bus she has organized a car pool.

Better Planning

Instead of going to the store, coming home

going to pay a bill, coming home

going to friend / relitives house, coming home

doing all at the same time

I try to kill two, three, maybe even four birds with one stone. In other words, I try to do a lot of different things in one trip.

I haven't changed my driving habits at all. I don't really know how high gas prices have to go before I consider it unaffordable.

Remember, the daily bag limit is 12, with the possesion limit twice the daily bag limit. Also, it is prohibited to carry more than 3 stones at a time.

why do females take the bus? all you have to do is stick out your thumb, and BAMM! there is a car pulling over to give you a ride. If I was a chick, I would never have to drive again,

you can always ask them to show ID first. Unless they are driving a nice car, then you know they are doing well and there is no need to be worried,

As soon as I sell my house, I'm getting one of these bad boys:

http://www.motorminders.com/images/wd/ArticlePictures/600/Autotalk%20Lexus%20Hybrid.jpg
The 2007 Lexus GS 450h, which will go on sale in the United States in the spring of 2006, is "the world's first hybrid luxury sedan and the first full hybrid vehicle with a front engine and rear wheel drive," Lexus, a division of Toyota, said in a statement.

Fuel economy will be "in the high twenties" and emissions will be among the lowest of any hybrid, Lexus said. The gas-only 430 sibling, in contrast, gets a combined fuel economy rating of 21 mpg and slightly higher emissions

Then I can live in it. :lol
