Royce White on NBA Comeback Attempt: It's Gonna Work

Minneapolis' Royce White, a 2012 NBA first round pick, is on the comeback trail. He's training with former Timberwolves guard and Eden Prairie girls coach/43 Hoops AAU coach Chris Carr.

White was drafted by Houston, traded to Philadelphia, released, and signed two 10-day contracts with Sacramento in March 2014.

Now a free agent, he has offers from the Clippers and Spurs to play on their summer league teams, and interest from others. On his comeback, White said, "I don't even believe in that, in case it doesn't work out, it's gonna work out, it's gonna work out."

White played in high school for DeLaSalle and Hopkins, and signed with the Gophers. But never played for them after being suspended for an incident at the Mall of America. He went on to star for Iowa State, which led the Rockets to using the 16th pick in the 2012 Draft on him.

White has been diagnosed with anxiety disorder, which is detailed in a lengthy SB Nation story. But he does want to make one part of that clear: "I will be flying. I never said I wasn't going to fly." White flew regularly when with the Cyclones, and while at each professional stop.

Intriguing. Hope he does pick the Spurs. He could be a nice wing/forward defender answer for a bench sorely lacking one. Possibly helps in the "big playmaker" ability if Boris has to be traded?

Good good, pick up an anxiety trooper who hasn't played real ball in a couple years with major baby mama issues that doesn't wanna fly in a plane.

This is going to be a fantastic off season.

It's a summer league invite. Not a big deal imo.

Nothing wrong with the Spurs turning over every rock. Maybe they'll find something and maybe they won't.

Exactly. It's the same reason they registered interest in Thomas Robinson. These guys were clearly well thought of with decent potential, or they wouldn't have been selected so high in the draft. Hopefully he chooses the Spurs because he'll need a solid, stable support system to realize whatever potential he might have.

Pop would mentally fuck this guy so bad. Spurs may be soft spoken but they aren't mentally weak.

There you have it. Tim and Boris could walk now. Spurs have a vagina who pretends to be a thug, and has YET to record ANY stat other than minutes missed fg and fouls.

To be less cynical he may be an upgrade over errors.... may.... N

i hope it works out well. he can play defense too, iirc. if he ends up on the Spurs roster, he's an ideal 3rd string Diaw/Anderson.

I guess a summer invite won't hurt, but this guy fucked the Rockets over big time. They bent over backwards trying to accommodate him and all he did was complain that they weren't doing enough. He wanted to be the poster boy for people with anxiety disorders, but all he did was make himself look like a big, whiny asshole.

All right, he's not worth this much fuss. He's done nothing to have team's fighting over him. I dunno if I'd even want him on the Spurs SL team, with him playing the same position as Anderson, LJC, Thomas and potentially a first-rounder.

Exactly, there will be what, 2-3 players currently on the Spurs roster who will be summer league participants?

He's a power forward. Anderson and Thomas are small forwards.

With his lack of quickness, 6'9" height, and 7'3" wingspan, Anderson will likely gravitate towards the PF spot, and soon, just like Diaw did by his 23 YO season in PHO.

Thanks for pointing this out. I don't know how people can see Anderson as a Diaw clone, but consider Amderson a 3.

I think he's a combo-forward, which is exactly what those other guys are.

He failed hard at the 3 this year. Unless they put him on a weight program to bulk him up 15 lbs, and move him to the 4, he likely won't make it. He lacks the quickness to defend any of the skill (1,2,3) positions.

Maybe eventually, but unless he gets significantly stronger in one off season, that's not happening now. He's not even strong enough to guard power wings, never mind power forwards.

I remember during an early season game, Miller mentioned that in their meeting with Pop, he said he had "visions of playing him as a four".

I'm skeptical though. It was an easier transition for Diaw and Walton, who were/are bulkier. Anderson might just be more like Dunleavy.

I think he's a combo-forward, which is exactly what those other guys are.

By default, I see both Anderson and Thomas as small forwards. As I alluded to, the former might transition towards being a power forward or combo forward, but right now he's not strong enough and the latter isn't big or strong enough.

Not to say they won't play both in Summer League though, because I'm sure they will.
