View Full Version : Great TV series on Amazon - Bosch

Decided to give this a try yesterday and watched several episodes. Based on some books that I didn't read but were supposed to be very good.

Great cop show. Can't think of anything since the Wire that I liked as well. Also very good casting. Titus something or other plays the main character and he's awesome. Almost all of the main characters are recognizable from other TV/ Movie work.

Amazon is putting out some top shelf entertainment imo.

Marlo. Damn. That's it. I placed Broyles immediately. But for the life of me, I couldn't remember where I'd seen Marlo. I don't like doing IMDB when I'm watching something because it'll tell you how many episodes they are in which can sometimes give away the ending. For the life of me, I could not figure out where I'd seen him.

Anyway, we wrapped it up last night. Very solid. Nothing special about the story but the acting and cinematography make it a very good show. Every main character and second tier character is top notch. Jason Gedrick is better than anything I've seen him in. Also starting to build a political back story somewhat like the Wire.

Last season was fantastic. I watched it a few months ago.

So I binged the whole 10 episodes yesterday. (note to myself: wtf are you doing with your life).

And to use your description of last season, Season 4 is fantastic.

Similar to last season, there's one main case combined with a few other sides cases. Including his quest to find his mom's killer.
Don't want to spoil anything so I'll leave it at that.

IMO, the show does a great job of blending in the personal lives of the characters just enough to make your interested. And not so much that it slows the show down.

They did set it up for a very interesting Season 5. Which they have been renewed for already.

Anyone that has enjoyed the first 3 seasons won't be disappointed.

I think that's why I like it. That it's a straight forward whodunit. I enjoyed The Fall, The Killing, etc. But it's refreshing to watching a really well done cop show that doesn't have to
rely on a genius psychopath killer to keep the cops on their heels. And doesn't spend 10 minutes per episode on random sex scenes that have nothing to do with the plot.

K, I finished and gotta say I'm disappointed.

Generic straightforward plot, no surprising twists. The storylines/cases also kept me wondering if they ever connect but never do.

The guy riding the bicycle stealing from people was a completely worthless tangent that dragged out through the season that ended up having nothing to do with anything.

He did make me laugh tho, especially stealing the phone right off the table of the that lady at the restaurant leaving her going wtf just happened

I somewhat agree on the bicycle dude. I had totally forgot that he was even in the previous seasons. I thought they were going to tie him in with something major.
I disagree with you on the rest though. But I don't want to spoil anything giving my reasons.

Yeah...I also don't agree that there weren't any twists. Maybe not in the main case but you know...
But I'll admit I possibly slightly overrate it because of the main character and how well Welliver carries it.
As well as the rest of the cast. Glad to see some of the Wire guys come out with strong performances.

Didn't enjoy season 4. The fizz has gone out of Bosch - a pissed-off cop with luggage, who goes around looking bored.
The actor who plays Bosch has an extremely limited range. Pity, because the character in Connelly's books as I recall is much more rounded.

Just finished the first book and have the second on order. Good stuff. Really doesn't slow down. I've given up on some other detective series where the author spent pages and pages throughout the book on some meaningless relationship between the main character and his/her love interest. Connelly (at least in Black Echo) keeps it fairly short and never spends more time than necessary.

Just finished it myself and agree with you. Might be my favorite as well. Even though the main story might have been the least complicated yet. Thought the secondary plots were also very interesting. And looks like they’ve set up at least two of the storylines for next season. Actually 3 with Irving.

Definitely feel the influence of the Wire with the inclusion of politics and the press in the stories.

Yeah...but those were written season to season so they were always having to come up with new ideas on the fly. There's over 20 Bosch novels that the series can pull from.
That being said, my guess is that it would be too hard to keep the core cast together at a reasonable cost for many more seasons.

I didn't think they were "brutal". But I did find myself messing with my phone during some of them. Most were the late night chats between Bosch and Maddie at his house.

Individually they weren't brutal but the whole collective of them in between the action scenes, imo.

I also thought the whole Captain framing the LT was stupid. His motive for going after her was weak and he was sloppy as shit in executing the frame. They busted him in like what, 24, hours?

This season was boring as hell. Titus Welliver totally mailed the last season in. He looked bored.

:lol What’s with all the lawyer and judge killing this season?

oh yeah…right. That whole story line was unnecessary and that was pretty ridiculous how easily they got caught.

Bosch : Legacy on Amazon Freevee (whatever that is).

Ah. So no additional add charge on or anything?Correct. Don't need to be a Prime member or anything. It's their Pluto TV.

Looks like the entire original series is now on Freevee, so even if you don't have Prime it's a great time to start from the beginning.

How are they making money if this is free?

I guess this a a decent place to throw this in.
The Lincoln Lawyer series starts on May 13 on Netflix.

Connelly seems to be amassing a fortune.

Edit...seems to be hard to pin down. One site has him at $250,000,000 in 2011. Then another at only $10,000,000 in 2021. Surely he's made well more than that for just the books.

Probably made a good bit on the movie of Lincoln Lawyer too if he got a cut of it being licensed to TBS, etc

Ah…maybe those are yearly numbers. I have no idea. I was just curious. But looking forward to a couple more shows from him.

I watched the first two eps of Lincoln Lawyer, I like it so far. I watched it before the Bosch spin off because commercials

I started Bosch Legacy on FreeVee. The commercials aren't bad. I think there's three commercial breaks per episode that are a couple minutes long and they put 3 to 4 short ads in each.
Anyway, it's pretty typical Bosch. The writing is good and the acting is as well. However, it's not as good a cast as Bosch imo. Instead of Jamie Hector or Lance Riddick carrying a plot line, you have Mimi Rogers or Madion Lintz. They're not bad. Just not as compelling to me.

That's what I've made it through as well. Or maybe 4. There's no doubt Welliver carries the show at this point. I like his character enough where I still enjoy it. That being said, I'm not as intrigued by Honey's law practice as I was the other various LAPD story lines. And I've never thought Maddie was very believable. Especially as a cop. But I still like the show. Also like his sometime partner. Maybe they involve him more. I guess another negative is how heroic they're making Bosch. SPOILER : Somehow infiltrating the secured Russian hideout and getting away and then later the very secure warehouse. All the while, not carrying a gun.

Season 1 really starts to pick up from Episode 4. His new tech guy is an interesting character. I like how they have several stories going and you don't know when they're going to wrap them up. Might be mid-season, might carry over. Something is always going on.

I watched it in one day. Better than I expected. Easy to make the Bosch comparisons. Main character works outside the lines. Single with a daughter. Multiple stories going on at the same time. Main character has something from the past he has to reconcile. Also a jazz fan.

All that being said, I thought it was pretty great. Maybe a couple of slow episodes in the middle but it got going again pretty fast.
