Better than Thibs or JVG.

I followed JVG's Rockets teams. He was an average coach.

Warriors are not going to repeat next year if they win this year. Alvin Gentry is very essential to Steve Kerr's success.

I'm just glad Van Gundy is not the coach.

He's partially right, though the key reason will be due to players leaving/regressing.

This is a good move by the Pells. Gentry is a good offensive coach.

JVG had shit talent and still managed to get the most out of his players

Come on son. JVG still had Yao and McGrady, and his offense was complete shit.

Adelman got more out of those teams than JVG. Sorry, but JVG hasn't done crap since 1999. Very overrated coach. He's a good coach, but nothing extraordinary.

Thibs would have been better IMO, Pelicans are a horrible defensive team, their offense will come naturally, regardless, but Gentry is still a great hire..good, balanced coach that did very well with those Suns teams and has been essential to the Clippers/Warriors success..

They're really opposite coaches. Thibs is a defensive coach while Gentry is an offensive coach.

RFA in 16/17. So if he were to sign the QO in order to force a move, 17/18.

Think Kawhi's situation this year, but in 2 years.

He would take a huge risk signing a one year qualifying offer. Plus, lose a ton of money.

Outside of Mcgrady and Yao the talent level was terrible.
I will give you that, he needed someone for the offensive side of the court but, man defensive juggernaut on most nights

I know, I think the Pelicans need more of a defensive-minded coach, though, they were the 22nd ranked defense, this year..Gentry is a good hire and will continue to help them grow, but their offense was already ranked 8th, this year, despite Montyball, so even a limited offensive coach like Thibs wouldn't have been a problem IMO(he would have had much more talent in NO than he did in Chicago, too)..

Gentry seems like a great player-coach, though, apparently he's well-liked, while Thibodeau is more old-school and Tom Coughlin-like..I imagine Thibodeau's minutes allocation was a concern, too, since Davis appears to lack durability, so far in his career..

Not really. Even a savage, Paul-George-type injury, he could come back from and get a max deal. But there's barely any precedent. Monroe did this with the Pistons last season, but nobody else worthy comes to mind.

But the easy money bet is he's a Pelican until 2022, path of least resistance and most cash.

He needs to somehow come to SA and team up with Kawhi, multiple titles imo.

I don't see how he has more talent in NOLA outside of AD. Gordon and Evans are average at best. Anderson is soft and doesn't defend or rebound. Asik is garbage offensively. Jrue has potential but still not an upper tier PG. Honestly, looking at the advanced metrics, the Pelicans are a one man team. Asik was second on the team in win shares at 4.3 which is terrible.

all the more reason for him to leave.:lol

I'm hoping Gentry can hire a good defensive assistant. Someone like Mike Malone who did a great job with the Hornets defense in CP3's last season with the team back in 2010-2011.

Well, Anderson and Gordon are off the books after this season freeing up cap room. Holiday was playing the best ball of his career before his injury. He's a keeper. But Evans, Anderson, and Gordon need to go.

Holiday is solid, but :lmao owing $21m to Tyreke fucking Evans over the next two seasons. On the bright side, this year was his first in the league where he didn't get worse from his previous year.

Maybe he turned the corner?

:lmao no

Gentry isn't D'Antoni. He is more than capable defensively.

That 2010 Suns team featured multiple defensive specialists in the rotation, and was one of the first to bring to successful use the 2-4 defensive wing with Hill and Dudley defending all of those positions. Word is he was behind the Marion use defensively from 1-4 as well when he was D'Antoni's assistant.

Awesome, now we won't have to see Tyreke Evans constantly keeping the ball out of Davis' hands.

Better than Thibs or JVG.

I followed JVG's Rockets teams. He was an average coach.

Based on what? The Rockets stars were always injured under JVG's watch. Either that or they had the year with Yao!!!!!! and Steve Francis, who faded from oblivion shortly thereafter. They did have a good team in '05 that got too high on themselves when they started doing a little good.

Anyways, why they're going with a retread like Gentry, IDK. It's not as if he's an unproven assistant, getting his first shot. Technically the other two are retreads but with a much better tract record of success.

Adelman got more out of those teams than JVG. Sorry, but JVG hasn't done crap since 1999. Very overrated coach. He's a good coach, but nothing extraordinary.

Adelman's reign also coincided with a better GM (one who didn't set the franchise back years with bad contracts) and JVG laid the defensive foundation for them.
