Porn to play hoops at Elon
Chris Porn took a drastic step when he transferred from Clio High to Central three years ago.
The 6-foot-9 sophomore knew he probably was trading a lot of playing time in the Clio basketball program for a seat on the Central bench, not to mention suburbia for the inner city.
"Most people thought I was crazy, but my goal was to play Division I basketball," said Porn. "You get the recognition of playing in the best conference in the state of Michigan (the Saginaw Valley Conference). Look at all the great players that have come out of Flint."
Porn's bold move paid off. He's now enrolled at Elon University, a Division I school in Elon, N.C. The Phoenix play in the Southern Conference.
Porn will redshirt his freshman year, but will work out with the team. Now 6-10, he's on a weight-training program that has boosted his weight from 190 pounds to 215.
Elon is coached by Ernie Nestor, a former Wake Forest and South Carolina assistant who once worked with current NBA player Tim Duncan. Nestor specializes in developing big players.
Porn also had attention from Central Florida and several Division II and III schools. But he felt comfortable at Elon, a school of about 4,500 students located 20 miles east of Greensboro.
"It fits me perfect," he said. "I feel welcome and I enjoy it here, the environment and the people."
Porn also felt welcome at Central. He didn't play much until his senior season, and then averaged only 5.6 points per game. But he became popular with his teammates and classmates and was voted homecoming king his senior year.
A 3.3 student at Central, Porn is undecided on a college major but is leaning toward business management or law.
