I don't think Boylen is nearly as bad as people here make him out to be. Yes that "forgot about Kawhi" incident was dismal and the Ayers signing didn't pan out, but he was a big part of the staff that won a ring, and in dominating fashion at that.

Coach Boylen was a big part of the staff, who's organization were the clear favorites to ring in 2014.

But I think you're asking about
he was a big part of the staff Everyone was a large part of the team & staff during the 6 run in their own way, no? (Queue the Parker weirdos).

I'd much rather Messina be the one who goes. The main reason is because I don't think anyone considers Boylen the heir apparent for the HC job. Boylen is harmless as an assistant. More in the Newman and PJ brand than the Bud or Brent vein. That's fine, since Udoka probably has the HC job on lock once Pop is gone.

Guys like bud and brett were here for years. Boylen is still pretty new by spurs standards. He's probably a better coach than we've been allowed to see. I think it's 50/50 he'll leave. Pop, messina, udoka, is not bad any stretch. I imagine he might feel upstaged by messina or maybe he just wants back to the Midwest?

Boylen moving right along. No future in SA, must know that even when Pop retires he's not pegged as HC.

Some say it's not a big deal but I can't get past the extremely bad brain fart he had of forgetting about Kawhi during a game he took over as coach after Pop was tossed. And the way he was so nonchalant about it when questioned about it postgame further cemented my hate for him. Oh, that and him pushing hard to get Ayres.

Are you really angry at the Spurs and think they are cheap? Why overpay him? If he was worth the extra money, I'm sure P&TFO would have done everything to keep him.

Boylen may have been a good practice coach working with the big men, but as a lead assistant, he was a walking cluster fuck. He didn't only forget to put Kawhi back in, he forgot Manu, too, but Manu is enough of a vet that he just went up to the scorer's table and checked himself into the game. I honestly felt that Boylen had slipped to 3rd on the assistant totem pole, even though he was ostensibly the lead. Pop thinks the world of Ime, even going so far as to re-assure him that he wasn't being moved down when they hired Messina, who also seemed to have more favor with Pop than Boylen.

Given how many Pop assistants get hired elsewhere as head coaches and Pop's overall reputation as an all-time great, my guess is that as assistant job with him is highly sought after and there will be plenty of strong candidates.
