Well make sure not to read the news, because it will make it harder for you to be unsure of those statements, tbh.

Well make sure not to read the news, because it will make it harder for you to be unsure of those statements, tbh.I've seen all manner of reports. Nothing said a replacement had to be completed first. The med school construction seems to be the priority for UT.

If you read different, I'd love to read it too. Don't be selfish.

93 thousand posts of useless and counting.

You said it's "being torn down" when questioned about its use for a basketball tournament. You answered a question about using it as though it's already gone away, making sure to insult them for mentioning it, then you said that you were unsure about the validity (since you now claim to know of the existence) of news reports that say that Erwin isn't going anywhere right now, as well as others reporting that the demolition of the Frank Erwin Center is part of the final phase of the Medical Center construction project, giving it as many as 15 years before it's torn down. Then you dodged that response to say that there's no news report about a requirement for a replacement being built, even though there are news reports about UT buying property and negotiating with the city to build a new arena in the time that Erwin has remaining.

In short, you misrepresented facts to someone who asked, and now pretend to think it possible that the biggest moneymaking sports program in the nation is going to give itself no place to play division 1 basketball. Only in your tiny brain exists the plan for UT basketball not to have an arena to play in just because there's no plan in place yet. Girls' volleyball gym, perhaps?

Just say so.

Everything I said stands until then. Erwin Center is going away.

If you want to feel offended on behalf of someone who gave no indication of being insulted, go ahead.

Sure, they could do a smaller SL in Erwin or some other location, but what would be the point with three others already on the schedule? That's the bottom line.

I didn't watch the Austin team last year....can Eddie play any defense? Other than shooting, does he have an transferrable offensive skills?

His shooting makes him an attractive deep bench option, but the Spurs should be able to find shooters. Does he have anything else going for him that would cause San Antonio to sign him on a make-good?

Anderson, LJC, Lalanne, Atkins, Blackshear, Cherry, Davies, Eddie, Wolters, and Ndoye.

Ndoye would also be interesting if the Spurs are looking for a center. Undrafted, but good size... 7'5" wingspan.. 9'4" standing reach.

Scouting report says he has decent defense http://basketball.realgm.com/analysis/236933/Scouting-Report-Jarell-Eddie at 6'7" that's good length to be on the court against other SGs.

Big Lville fan so watched him all 4 years. He actually got pretty good oppurtunity and just never really reached the potentional he should of. Thinking maybe in the Spurs system that potentional can be tapped.

Lalanne is a long shot, but I really hope he shows enough to warrant a 3rd string role. Also, if Livio shows any sign of a midrange shot, he'll be a solid addition to the team.

Who starts at point tonight? Probably Cherry? He had a solid game vs the Spurs last summer. He's definitely confident and aggressive on offense. I'm not sure his defense was as effective I think he got into a one on one battle with Cotton.

Hopefully, Marco leaves a big hole on the bench. Kyle hasn't sold me on his jumper yet, and Manu needs two pure shooters with him at all times. He went all 4 years there so I'm guessing he's not raw, right? There's not a window big enough right now, so we need guys who know what they're good and not so good at

Also, isn't LJC just an awful player? He barely sees the court on that Asvel team. Don't think that's because CIA Pop wants to conceal our weapon from other scouts. But, he did have that monster hoop summit game, so maybe he has some game.

His defense is bad and he can't finish at the rim to save his life. That said, he can pass, handle the ball, and seems to be a smart player. If he can show that he has improved his jumper, he's got a shot at 3rd string.

No hes not raw. He is a set shooter who when set up for decent looks can hit them at a good clip. He is 6'5 and pretty physical for a two guard, has a 6'10 wingspan, so he can guard twos and threes. Pretty good defender. Problem was Louisville had an awful offense this last season so he was forced too shoot alot of bad shots. His junior year clip of 39% behind the arc is more telling and what we can hopefully expect from him. He can't really create his own shot. Could be a decent three and d guy off the bench if he can knock his shots down.

Yeah he played bad but I think it was cause they were trying to make him a SF which he isn't. So if you want SF then get ready to be disappointed. He is a tweener but hopefully he can still make a impact.

From interviews, it sounds like Lalanne actually has a nice shooting stroke, but just didn't really get the chance to showcase it in the system he was in at UMass. If he can prove that jumper is reliable, and use his length/size to have impact on the boards/defense, I think there's an outside shot he makes the team. Obviously not going to get my hopes up considering he was picked in the mid-50s, but something to keep an eye out on.

From the other side of things, it'll be interesting to see how Okafor looks.

Lalanne a potential 3 and D player. If you watch his videos, he scores with either hand.

Despite having played for UMass for 4 years, they say he needs to improve his footwork. Looks like one of those players that everyone overlooked. Hope he becomes a serviceable player for the Spurs.

What happened to Adam Hanga? I thought he was going to play in this years summer league?

lurker23

I think lurker23 reported from the RMR one year too.

Yeah, I live in the Salt Lake City area, so I was excited to have the summer league back this year. The crowds were amazing for the 3 days, with 10-12 thousand people at each of the three sessions. Add to that the fact that the teams were praising the way the Utah summer league was run, I have a feeling it's going to stick around this time. As one of my friends who lives here says, "Why would you draft a 19-22 year old, give him millions of dollars, and then send him immediately to Las Vegas?"

Looks like the Raptors have some advanced international scouting too. Nobody saw the Caboclo signing. Wish the Spurs were the only ones doing this, but their expertise has spread throughout the league.

Lakers SL team should look stacked. They literally have up to 6 players who project to be on the main squad this year - several of which could be seeing quality minutes.

That doesn't speak to the strength of the Lakers summer tram...it just speaks to the weakness of their regular squad tbh. :lmao

30 Randle, Julius F 6-9 250

These are the players that look to project to being with the Lakers this upcoming season. It's a big chunk of their team.

Kobe

Brandon Bass

Nick Young

Yeah, he was supposed to come. I wanted to see him. We needed someone like him. Slasher, defense, athletic, but Simmons already looks better than Hanga. So, not missing seeing him. Maybe he was even told...no soup for you...we're signing Simmons, so he backed out or they backed him out.

6'10" wingspan and 36" vertical leap.

Strengths: Hopson is a former top 10 recruit and shows very good talent offensively … Is a very athletic SG with nice explosiveness, leaping skills and speed … Smooth player who has prototypical size and length from the SG spot at 6’7 202 with a 6’11 wingspan … Had some impressive scoring performances against some top level teams and improved his aggressiveness and polish some leading into his Jr. year after playing for the U.S. Select Team the summer prior … Has a nice shot, with soft touch…Beautiful form, good elevation and a high release…Very good spotting up, but also solid around screens and off crossovers…Has NBA range spotting up and is consistent from as far as 22 feet off the bounce…Has good raw ability to put the ball in the basket…Shows a nice step back that he likes to utilize off the dribble…Shows the ability to make mid-range pull up shots…A capable slasher with a very quick 1st step and excellent body control…Shows the ability to finish shots in traffic around the rim…Lead his team with 34 dunks on the year, which is a testament to his athleticism and finishing ability…Very good in transition…Has instant offense potential off a team’s bench

Weaknesses: The problem that plagued Hopson more than anything was consistency…Will have an explosive scoring game and then follow it up with a very quiet game where he lacks aggression…Is a below average ball-handler, and the ball often slows him down when he’s dribbling…Gets his pocket picked more than an NBA caliber SG should off the dribble…Doesn’t move without the ball as well as you like when plays aren’t called for him, and stands around far too much around the arc…Feel for the game and polish are underdeveloped for a guy with his experience…Was more aggressive as a Jr. looking for his shots, but sometimes showed poor shot selection…Plays poor D, especially for someone with his athletic and physical tools…Won’t get a lot of steals, lacks awareness off the ball and also falls asleep on-ball…Lacks energy on this end….Doesn’t close out on shooters with urgency…Although he added some moves, he still can be predictable at times offensively…Teams are questioning his mindset in interviews, and seems to be giving unrealistic answers about the type of player he can be…Wasn’t a leader at Tennessee when leadership was leaded most

Overall: Hopson has undeniable offensive talent and nice athleticism, and it manifested itself with some explosive games over his career. He still lacks a bit of polish and plays too lax on the defensive end. His interviews with GM’s have drawn criticism as well. Still, Hopson has upside as a scorer off the bench similar to a Von Wafer of the Celtics.

The "Centerpiece" making an appearance! In all seriousness, that's a decent young frontline with Leonard and Vonleh.

Top 8 seeds get a bye in first round, so they will play on July 16:

Each team will play three games (July 10-14) in the preliminary round and will be seeded 1-24 for a single elimination tournament (July 15-16, July 18-20) on the basis of the results of the preliminary round

• Seeding for the tournament will be determined by record with ties being broken using the tie-break criteria described below

• Teams seeded 9-24 will be play in the first round of the tournament and teams seeded 1-8 will receive a first round bye

Portzingas looking good in NY. Yep. I really liked him. He has looked impressive for a 19 yr. old kid. Has a nice shot, good BBIQ, agile and quick for a guy so tall, really long. The block party he had on Okafor was amazing. The guy used just good timing and didn't even have to jump to block him, that length! And only 19 yrs old! Wow! I have to say he's been my favorite big of this draft to watch.

Yah that's a good matchup. On the second unit, I doubt the best defender of that unit will check him so him having a quality defender will be a good test. I'm looking forward to seeing how he responds.

Becky Hammon interview and article:

http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nba/2015/07/16/becky-hammon-interview-spurs-summer-league/30270355/

LAS VEGAS – To those who know Becky Hammon back home in South Dakota, her year as the first woman to serve as a full-time assistant coach in the NBA was hardly a surprise.

Whether it was hunting trips with her father and brother, or on the basketball court where she eventually blossomed into a WNBA star, Hammon could always keep up with the boys.

But Hammon knows this is different. She’s making history every day, pounding the rock that is gender inequality with the hopes that her story can lead to change for the women who will follow in her footsteps. Hammon was hired to Gregg Popovich’s staff as a full-time member last summer. She reached another benchmark this week, as Hammon served as the head coach of the Spurs’ summer league team in Las Vegas.

In between the practices, film sessions and games that took place here, Hammon took time with USA TODAY Sports to reflect on her first year working with the game’s most respected coach and his esteemed staff, and her hopes for a day when she’s no longer an outlier.

How different are you now, as a person and as a coach, than you were a year ago?

“I feel like this whole last year was just learning. Every day, coming in learning. It was like going to school with a professor, just coming in there and taking notes.

“It’s one thing to watch the NBA, but when you have to be there for every film session, every practice, it’s a grind. It’s a lot of hard work.”

NBA business is growing, but league striving for consistency

The Spurs have this culture of "we" over "me," and Popovich gravitates toward people who are over themselves. So as all this attention has come your way, how have you handled that dynamic?

“I just have to be me, and that’s what I’m most responsible for. Pop gave me the job because of who I am, and my brain, my personality, and what I can bring to the table. That’s ultimately why I got the job. I think if he were to hire me and I wasn’t qualified, what a disaster it would be, or if I didn’t fit in. It could end up really hurting women, so it has to be the right person. Throw the gender thing out, and it has to be the right person, it has to be the right fit. You have to be knowledgeable. The last reason I want to be hired is because of my gender. I want to be hired because you trust me, because of my potential, because you believe that I know basketball, and we go and we build from there. I think those are things that Pop acknowledged in me and recognized in me.”

But that’s a lot of pressure. So when you came in, how did you feel and when did you feel like this was going to work?

“I think the worst thing that I could have done, and which I tried not to do, was to prove how much I know. I didn’t want to come off like that, didn’t want to be like that. I came in with the attitude of, ‘Let me learn. If there are things that I can help (with) or bring to the table, I’ll certainly mention those.’ That’s just in any job. I think when people take that approach, it leaves a bad taste in people’s mouths, like, ‘This person doesn’t get it.’ ”

Does that mean you were quiet early on?

“I just think there’s a real art in listening. I need to listen. I mean, these guys have been in the Spurs organization, they know how things are done, what’s expected. So for me to learn and observe, that doesn’t mean I was totally quiet — I spoke up when I saw something. But I didn’t want my voice to get lost in just noise. ‘Oh here she goes, she’s just talking.’ Choosing your moments, but also Pop would have told me to shut up, too, and it’s never fun to be told to shut up by your boss.”

Adam Silver talks longer moratorium, changes to playoff seeding

So has he told you to shut up?

“No, he hasn’t. But I hopefully didn’t give him too much of an opportunity to.”

Who was the player who was easiest to connect with and who took a little longer?

“Well, me and (Spurs point guard) Tony (Parker) were friends long before, so he’s a very good friend. I would actually bounce things off of him, and we had conversations even before I ever got hired. I was kind of charged with point guards a little bit in practice, so if we were doing specific shooting stuff I would work with the point guards, so Cory Joseph was a guy who I worked with a lot. Boris Diaw was my guy on game day, so I was delegated different duties. And obviously the ones who you work the closest with — and obviously I wasn’t working with a lot of post players— you start to get a rapport with them, to build a relationship with them.”

You have had some what-if chapters in your story. The Olympics in 2008 and 2012, and how you and Popovich bonded there. And then when you tore your ACL as a member of the San Antonio Silver Stars in July 2013 and spent much of the year as an unofficial member of the Spurs coaching staff. Do you think those two things came into play in getting this job?

“For sure. I think there are so many little steps, and factors, of my path, and my journey. I could go back to my childhood. I was always with my (older) brother. I know how to hang out with guys and get along with guys. I was always with my dad and my brother. I know that if you can’t keep up, you get left behind. So you learn to pull your weight. You learn to not be the one that’s causing the problems, whether we’re camping, where I’d better be the one to help put up the tent. You can’t just be a taker, and be like, ‘Oh, I’m a girl so I don’t know how to do it. I can’t collect wood to put on the campfire, because I’m a girl.’ I learned to work hard and to keep up. Like I said, you can go all the way back to something as little as that, going hunting and fishing with my dad all the time.”

I have to imagine your parents are just beaming with pride. I’m sure they have been for a long time, but this is obviously bigger than basketball. What does that mean?

“They’ve been proud of me a long time, but they will be the first to smack me down if I forget where I came from. My mom still thinks she can take me over her knee and spank me if I get out of line. They’ve been so supportive. I mean, they’ve come to Moscow, to everywhere I’ve played, China, everywhere. They’ve just been around the world with me. This last one obviously the impact that it had is just mind-blowing. I mean, I’m a kid from South Dakota, and it’s just so weird the stage that I’ve been (given). Being added onto the Spurs staff, and then this, it’s a little mind-blowing, honestly. It can be overwhelming if I think about it, so I try not to think about it.”

What stories come to mind in terms of the scope of this and people you may have met or heard from because of it?

“Well, obviously, President Obama tweeted me. That’s pretty huge. I felt like I was in (the television show) 24, where they’re telling me, ‘The president just called.’ Like, the president just tweeted me. Holy crap, the president of the United States just tweeted me.”

Did it pop up on your phone when it happened?

“I got a text, and it was like, ‘Holy cow, the President just tweeted you.’ So I saw it, and I was like, ‘That’s un-frickin-believable.’ None of us, including Pop, anticipated (that). Because originally our plan was, ‘OK, we’re going to announce it and then we’ll take a day or two and just hit the local media.’ Then it announced and all of a sudden it was just a barrage of every possible news show. It was just huge. And then, all of a sudden, I wasn’t doing local media. It was like, ‘We’ll do one or two big hits and then drop it.’ The other thing was that I was playing at the time, and I was like, ‘It’s just too much of a distraction. I need to finish, I want to finish well as a player. And I want to finish my playing career.’ I wanted to go out like that, to be celebrated as a player. I’m not sitting here today if there’s no WNBA.”

Becky is so personable!!! Very likeable and upfront, seems very smart! Nothing of the Pop dry humor. One goo question would have been how does she rate herself in terms of how do you know if you messed something up? Do you get feedback from Pop.

Also, off topic, but Spurs coaches very high on KA. In several interviews already has mentioned how much they are relying on him here and she stopped short here of saying how pleasantly surprised they are at his development.

Nothing has changed since last summer. The Spurs have always been high on Anderson's future. Perhaps they have only been surprised by his work ethic. Not that they thought he was apathetic, but they didn't realize how relentless he would be working on his game. Most know he was a projected lottery pick or mid 1st rounder. Elliott gushes over this kid every time he sees action on the court. Every analyst does the same, talking up Anderson's ability. It's only a segment of the Spurs fan base who doubt, not only his ability and the front office for drafting him, but even so much as to ridiculously question whether or not he has NBA ability at all. But hey, that's what never weres do. So now all the criticism will shift from he'll never make it to, welllllllllllll...the only reason he was able to do that was...Typical never were's rationale.

Simmons didn't make 1st or 2nd team, lol

happy for KA but really surprised that Simmons didn't at least make 2nd team. Simmons has been huge for the Spurs Summer legue team getting to the finals.

Just looking going off stats, it seems like Simmons should've definitely gotten in over at least one of the 2 guards on the 2nd team:

Simmons: 15.4 ppg (53 FG%, 28 3P%), 3.4 rpg, 3.2 apg, 1.6 spg, 3 TO per game.

Larry Drew II: 10 ppg (46 FG%, 43 3P%), 7.8 apg, 4 rpg, 2 spg, 3 TO per game

Mudiay: 12 ppg (38.5 FG%, 14.3 3P%), 5.8 apg, 3.5 rpg, 1.2 spg, 5 TO per game

Not Larry Drew. A few ponts in shooting percentage doesn't make up for 28% vs 43% from three, and being doubled up in assists, and beat at least marginally in the other categories. Maybe, but it's not clear cut, IMHO.
