Technology can be distracting especially in the classroom, so one science teacher in Florida decided to acquire and deploy a cell service jammer for his classroom to stop students from using their phones during class.

However, the high school teacher might have had more of an effect on the surrounding ares of the school - jammers can disrupt service up to 1,000 feet away, preventing important calls, emergency calls, and police communications.

The teacher was found out using the device when agents from Verizon contacted the school after noticing the hole in their network.

The teacher, Dean Liptak, had apparently spoken to a police officer who had said that it is only illegal to use a cell phone jammer if it is used with "malicious intent".

Liptak had also done testing to check that the signal was only for his classroom by setting the jammer to work for ten meters, checking around outside of the classroom to make sure his cellphone work which he claims it did.

His employers have now suspended him for five days and he may get a first-degree misdemeanor - much less than a potential fine of $112,000 USD.

What do you think?

Should Liptak face a harsher punishment?

Or was the jammer used with good intentions to make sure his students were paying attention in his classroom?
