That one is still a head scratcher but his buyout was more than Spurs were willing to pay. Doubt they would do something like that this season given their cap flexibility and the position in the west both teams are in.

In this maneuver we actually helped a conference and divisional rival. Everyone of the Spurs staff, including Duncan, wanted Howard but Popovich vetoed Howard.
