Here's a reason to cheer. This is a story on NBA wives that has nothing to do with Kobe Bryant.

It's about a charitable group called Behind the Bench: The National Basketball Wives Association. The non-profit group was founded 11 years ago with the mission of doing good for women, children and families.

On Friday at 11 a.m., Behind the Bench will be doing just that at the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame in Springfield.

More specifically, its members have collected a great deal of top-notch NBA memorabilia for a silent auction that will take place that day to benefit the non-profit organization called Dress for Success. Jack Briggs of WGBY-TV will be master of ceremonies for the event.

Dress for Success is an international organization that helps low-income women break into the workforce by providing them with professional-looking clothing.

Shirley Seals, president of Behind the Bench and wife of former Seattle Sonics player Bruce Seals, will attend the event with several other NBA wives.

"It's wonderful that they're taking such an interest in our community," said Doreen T. Sadus, president of the local chapter of Dress for Success.

Seals explained that Behind the Bench is teaming up with Dress for Success for the entire year. "We had our first event during All-Star Week in Los Angeles in February," said Seals from her home in Boston. "Then I got a phone call from Doreen."

Behind the Bench has more than 100 members, all of them wives of current or former NBA players.

Among the items up for bid will be basketballs autographed by Reggie Miller and the Pistons, a jersey autographed by Lebron James, a signed and framed picture of Clyde Drexler, and other memorabilia related to the Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Lakers, Washington Wizards, Portland Trailblazers and many other teams.

Bill Walton alone has donated an autographed basketball, a signed UCLA basketball jersey from the class of 1974, and several signed photos.

Admission to the auction is $30. That includes a luncheon and, remember, it's all for the benefit of low-income women struggling to find jobs.
