Great for these reasons:

2. Strengthens one of Cleveland's rivals
3. Doesn't appear that Mills or Diaw has been traded

Great that Splitter goes to the Hawks, tbh..they desperately need size, he fits their system, and he's going to be a big addition for them..good to see him land in a good spot..

Lakers didn't make strong impression in Aldridge meeting, sources say. Spurs can close on him. LMA expected to make decision fairly soon.

Ramona Shelburne of ESPN.com:

The Lakers meeting with LaMarcus Aldridge went almost two hours. Source in the room said it went “really well”

From a person in the room for the Lakers pitch “LaMarcus seemed completely focused.”

Always hard to gauge how a meeting really went, but Lakers felt better about this mtg w/ Aldridge than they did w/ Dwight or Melo.

Bill Oram of the Orange County Register:

Been told Kobe Bryant was “very good” in Lakers meeting with LaMarcus Aldridge. Also that meeting went “well,” for what that’s worth.

Not so sure about that.

In any event, the die is now cast.

Baynes. Baynes does a great job against Howard when isn't able to get away with offensive fouling him.

Question is who is going to defend the likes of Davis, Griffin, Zbo. I guess the Spurs will revert to the Amare strategy of letting those guys get their, but shut down everyone else.

As much I like Healthy Splitter, being able to salary dump him for nothing is an opportunity the Spurs couldn't pass up right now. Walking into the Aldridge meeting with such a clear picture of the future is worth the gamble of having to figure out a Plan B if Aldridge goes elsewhere.

Will be interesting to see details. Spurs may get trade exception too...

That could be VERY helpful in adding bench depth.

I don't think we even want the trade exception. Pretty sure that would count against our cap and nix our ability to sign LMA. Any draft pick would work since we would have to jettison Splitter anyway.

With our Big 3 there and Pop LMA probably realized they couldn't say no.

With regard to Splitter, his salary is just about right and quite cap friendly. We were asking ourselves whether we really wanted to part with Splitter, but of course when the gain is LMA that is a no brainer.

How is this salary dump working? Do we take draft picks back?

True but we'd have to give up Mills which depending on the final cap figure isn't guaranteed right now. Also expect him to sign a 2+1 at which point the raises don't mean much.

If he's willing to commit for 5 years then I'm all for a sign and trade, we'd have Aldridge, Leonard and Green locked in earning under 50% of the cap in 2017 in that case which would let us add another great piece.

I won't. Even in a trade where the primary goal is clearing cap space, you have to come away with a more material asset than the rights to a player like Walter Tavares who has little-to-no NBA future. Tiago Splitter is a quality starting center with a fair contract, for whom certainly more teams than just the Hawks would have liked to acquire. They can (and should) get something of moderate value in return beyond just the cap space, even its just a highly protected first round draft pick down the line. This isn't Eddy Curry and his contract that we just traded.

BIG FUCKING MISTAKE. I GUARANTEE IT.

i don't know if you're joking or not. but i agree. Splitter had a nice contract, and all that time in the Spurs system. He's been brought along through the draft and stash program and benched for Blair. He is beautiful in pick and roll. His defense wasn't bad. The injuries were annoying, and his space makes room for LMA. i don't think either reason is good enough excuse to dump him. LMA is a loser, i think we're getting RJ 2.0

Is that true? Being able to have access to the MLE sounds good to me.

Actually, I'm pretty sure it's no longer possible with the Splitter trade. We would have to send Portland $13.9m of salary and we don't have anyone on the roster to send them. We'd have to take him in to cap space which means losing the MLE and all our cap holds on Jospeh, Belinelli etc... The only benefit would be to Aldridge getting 7.5% raises, but we'd have to give away picks for Portland to agree

Richie
07-01-2015, 12:56 PM
Of course if it means getting Aldridge for 5 years at this years cap figure I'm willing to give up some picks in a sign and trade. We'd have crazy cap space in 2017. I suspect it's a 2+1 or 3+1 though.

Per the Hawks' SBNation site....

According to multiple sources, the Hawks have acquired Tiago Splitter in a deal involving non-roster pieces. I've talked about the non-roster pieces before and they include the rights to Marcus Eriksson and Dimitrios Agravanis (2015 NBA Draft), Edy Tavares and Lamar Patterson (2014 NBA Draft), Sergey Gladyr (drafted in 2009), Giorgos Printezis (part of the Thabo sign-and-trade), Alain Digbeu (drafted in 1997), and Augusto Binelli (drafted in 1986). So the Hawks will be sending the rights to one or more of these players in exchange for Tiago.

It should be noted that future draft picks would also constitute "non-roster pieces."

I don't really like the deal too much, even if Aldridge is signed and I don't feel good about that happening either.

My problem is that it sells so damn low. And to a contender! Never trade a good player to a contender for nothing, it's teams doing that w which kept the bulls and Lakers dynasties back in the day.

All out of fear. I understand the fear in splitter being hurt often and in the wrong side of 30. I know he began the last two postseasons injured and while the spurs were able to beat the low seeded Dallas team they failed against LAC.

But to get almost nothing, and maybe even adding more to splitter, just a damn shame. Don't know the final details, but losing a sound player just for the chance at an overrated mid-range big ... I think they might have been better off with the mle and the bae and just trying again with the same group plus the mle / bae signings.

Hopefully, if it all comes to fruition, Tavares is a piece coming back, but I'm skeptical. I heard a few months ago that the Hawks are high on him. That said, they're now well stocked at C and both big positions in general for at least the near future, so who knows.

It's a pity to lose Splitter's elite post and team defence, but that's the price you pay for LMA. ;)

Pretty irritating if we can't get any decent prospects back.

Sounds like Pop and Bud have a gentlemen's agreement. Will probably work out details depending on what else happens in the next week.

Thanks again, Bud.

At the very least, we didn't get Daye back.

This leaves the Spurs with the same squad that played well down the stretch this season. Maybe Pop & company decided it was time to move on from Tiago no matter what else happens. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Spurs take it low and slow for a while. Be what he may, at least Baynes is familiar with TD and the system. No need to fubar the chemistry if Timmy and Manu are up for another run.

It would be surprising if the Spurs didn't get a pick from Atlanta. At the very least a couple of 2nd rounders.

Atlanta's Picks

2nd Rounders

2016-Atlanta
2016-Washington
2017-Miami (protected from 31-40)
2017- Brookyln
2017-Atlanta

I'd be cool with the rights to Taverez (7'3 Center, 23 Years old) alogn with the Washington and Brooklyn 2nd rounders. If not a first.

Glad he went to the Hawks. Really glad. Would love to see them in the Finals.

You really don't want that. They have the guy who can stop LMA when healthy.

Umm Tiago was part of that squad that played well down the stretch. What are you talking about? Tiago was very aggressive, maybe the most aggressive I'd ever seen him and playing some of his best ball in all of his time in San Antonio. It all started going down the drain when he got hurt again with about 3 games left in the season. You could see the Spurs level of play in those games dropped.

I'm going to now comment that I don't like this trade if the Spurs don't get Aldridge.

The Baynes Blake Griffin kept baptizing in game 1? Bayes is not the same as TS defensively.

Nice. Helpful to have teams you can deal with. Still, even with a contract dump, should get back an intl prospect and a pick for Splitter.

They also get a Splitter-sized trade exception, right? Could come in handy down the line.

Sure Baynes, and just about all other Spurs were punked by the Clippers. There may already be a second row seat behind the Hawks bench with his name all over it.

This is such a bogus trade. There's no nothing about this deal. No press release, no word of any other player contract nor draft picks nor draft rights involved. Just a mention by some reporter in 140 characters or less that all that will be figured out later.

They would have to renounce any and all exceptions to free up the cap space they would use for a contract, so no.

This should be a chapter in Spurs/CIA Pop lore. The bullshit "trade" which everyone reported without actually happening. Until (we hope) it needed to.

So Baynes got owned by Blake I remember a certain All Star getting owned by Hakeem...Shit happens....just clean it up and move on....

Well, David only got owned in one series by Hakeem. Head to Head it's something like 30-12 in D-Rob's favour. That whole series has tainted the perception of Robinson. Sure Hakeem was better, his post game is what made him better, but David also had to guard him in single coverage most of the time in that series whereas the Rockets doubled teamed David.
