Sure, he was soft, at times, and his injuries were frustrating, but he was a huge part of 2 runs to the Finals and 1 championship..

He was essential to the defensive success of this team, his performances vs. the Warriors/Randolph/Gasol/Nowitzki/Aldridge in the 2013 and 2014 playoffs were conducive to the Spurs' run, and he never complained, despite spending the beginning of his Spurs' career on the bench splitting minutes with a player like Dejuan Blair(:lol) and behind Bonner/old McDyess..

The difference Splitter made is demonstrated by three things -- (1) that Memphis series in '11 when Splitter wasn't used, (2) everything that happened after that when he joined the rotation, until (3) this year when he was injured for the First Round.

Perfect bookends for the Spurs' run with Mr. Splitter, the underappreciated interior anchor. Simple as that.

Great person. Really damn good player when healthy. He might be the best pure pick-and-roll center in the league. And at his best he's probably a top 10-15 defensive big.

I hate the fact that we had to offload Splitter as without him I don't think the Spurs would've sniffed the Finals in recent years. Sucks he couldn't stay healthy but his pick and roll defense will be sorely missed.

I shudder at the Spurs big man rotation defensively moving forward, but hard to turn down an all star big man.

IIRC, there was a game where Coach Bud filled in for Pop and the Spurs won because he called pick-and-roll with Splitter like literally 50% of the plays. I want to say it was against the Rockets.

But, yeah, if healthy Splitter is going to be very good for the Hawks. Coach Bud is going to run soooo many pick-and-rolls with four shooters spacing the court. It'll be difficult to stop, tbh.

ElNono
07-01-2015, 05:38 PM
tbh, can the Spurs roll back the trade if LMA doesn't pan out? IMO, it's interesting not a lot of details have come out about this particular trade...

TD 21
07-01-2015, 05:38 PM
Pleased for him that he was dealt to probably the next best situation in the league for him. Even if Millsap stays, he still figures to play roughly the same minutes, too.

That said, I get that the Hawks did the Spurs a favor, but let's not lose sight of the fact that the Spurs did them one too. This is a valuable player, in his prime, on a good value contract. In other words, they better have gotten something decent in return, especially when you consider that they're going to need all the inexpensive, young talent they can get to fill out the roster going forward.

A little of both. The Spurs screwed themselves a bit because the rookie scale applies to first rounders only. They figured he was worth the wait even though it cost them a year by drafting him when they did.

I really liked Splitter despite the nagging injuries. I always felt he made a huge difference when it came to intangibles and defense.I remember prior to Splitter being a spur the Lakers with Gasol would always get up for the Spurs knowing they could laugh at and embarrass the spurs due to their lack of size. It was down right frustrating to watch and I'll never forget the game in which Bynum got over 30 rebounds which was a huge turning point for the spurs and Splitter. It was after that game Pop finally decided to give Splitter significant minutes and in the next two games against the lakers the spurs curb stomped them with ease. That was one of my favorite Splitter moments because I knew from that point forward the Spurs were back to being a serious contender again.

I don't know why it took Pop so long to figure out Splitter could actually help the team. We've had bigs in the past like Oberto/Rasho/Nazr that have helped us. It almost seems like Pop's relationship with Splitter went downhill when he was injured in his first training camp. I believed they wanted to start him but when he got injured they didn't revisit it. I believe Pop had said they had big plans for him.

Classy post by Tiago! Really glad he's going to another good organization and hope he can help Atlanta surpass the Cavs. Wish him success.

I for one would be all for re-signing Splitter when he's an FA in a year. Doesn't seem there is any bad blood in this move, so it may be possible.

The Golden God, tbh..

His body is broken and he will probably never be a relevant rotation player in the NBA again, but he was a huge part of a championship team, including completely destroying the beloved stat-padder Carmelo Aldridge..

:lol so many Spurs fans hated him and called him soft, yet now SA is stuck building a team around an even softer big with an allergy to big games and the WCFs..

Such a huge part of the run that he couldnt even play in some series. Congrats for your dumbest post since the KL is a #1 option thread.

What thread was that?

And yes, only an idiot would deny that Tiago was huge in the 2014 playoff run..

Cost us the 2013 Finals with his atrocious shitty play.

He set a good screen. A healthy splitter kept Duncan alive. There's a lot he did...But lmao he's not any better than lma. You'd need a Manu to make splitters game possible.. No Manu= a useless stiff with bad hands

It's just ironic that many Spurs fans didn't want a "soft" player in a role player capacity, yet they're content with building around an even softer player as a cornerstone:lmao

I dont think the Spurs would be bigger vaginas with Tiago right now and I don't like him. All in all this season is a huge disappointment.

No spurs fan wants KL or LMA as the man. The kids do. The people that fall for the advertising and media hype do. Not the fans.

Lma is dealing with some legit bigs. And it's not like the thunder are scared of Duncan Diaw, etc.

You are overestimating splitter now. Like mills, he was Manu dependent. Like mills he's injured.

It's way easier to replace splitters defense than lmas jump shot gravity. Its the right call, it's just not enough

I love my dog Harlem, but all this is calculated because he wants his LMA take to hold up. LMA played a solid game tonight. Tiago was a big part of 2014, but he wouldn't fit the same this year as he had then, even if healthy, because of the decline of Manu, Duncan, Diaw, and Parker, and the emergence of Leonard as the 1st option. The spacing would have been absolute shit. And the Spurs would've been more reliant on the jumper than they are now.

Love to have him off the bench, though.

Don't give a fuck if Splitters body is broken at this point, he still did more for this franchise than LaFaggot Aldridge ever will.
