Uber and "privacy"

It's these Millennials (http://fortune.com/2013/03/12/carsharing-catches-on-with-millennials/), with their "inverted view of privacy," who have helped make Uber a $50 billion global transportation juggernaut (http://money.cnn.com/2015/05/11/investing/uber-50-billion-valuation/). That in itself says something about current expectations of privacy. Despite Uber's troubled reputation (http://www.nytimes.com/2015/06/23/technology/uber-data-collection-changes-should-be-barred-privacy-group-urges.html?_r=0) over the years for misusing personal information, including the use of "God view (http://www.forbes.com/fdc/welcome_mjx.shtml)," users continue to use the app.

Perhaps that's why Uber continues to push the boundaries of user privacy. The company's latest move: a questionable new data privacy policy (https://www.uber.com/legal/usa/privacy), set to go into effect July 15.

The new data collection policy will allow the company to collect even more data by accessing a user's location even when the smartphone app is not in use (http://www.pcworld.com/article/2939092/privacy-group-complains-about-uber-data-collection.html).

Under this policy, Uber also asserts the right to assemble a user's complete travel history, as reported by Fortune (http://fortune.com/2015/06/23/uber-privacy-epic-ftc/).

This means Uber can hold on to data from every trip you've taken with them.

Along with that, Uber may ask for access to a user's contact list in order to send marketing promotions to all their unsuspecting friends.

The new data privacy policy has already drawn protest from the Electronic Privacy Information Center, which filed a complaint (https://epic.org/privacy/internet/ftc/uber/Complaint.pdf) this week at the Federal Trade Commission asserting that "this collection of users' information far exceeds what customers expect from the transportation service."
