View Full Version : Are the Spurs still "Built not Bought" after LMA signing? Some are saying no.

What would you say to the salty people complaining that the Spurs are no longer built not bought.

I think it's bullshit, the Spurs are replacing a player's role who is turning 40 this season and has gotten it done before this signing many times.

Plus the big 3 was late round draft picks, Kawhi was not a top 5 or top 10 pick, and the role players were picked up on waivers and total "one man's trash is another man's treasure" situations.

Some serious salty tears going on around the NBA forums with this LMA move today and I don't want to hear it. Especially when Lebron has been doing it before even turning 30 years old and still not able to get it done. And these same people want to call him the GOAT. Lebron buys super teams but the Spurs can replace a retiring player's position?

OMG so bought, we'd get the biggest asterisk if Spurs win a championship now. Maybe they'll replace it with a dollar sign instead :depressed

Another thing to point out is that we had to lose a quality player in order to get LMA, something LeBron bought team's never do.

The false modesty of claiming to be superior because you've had to do it a harder way than others will ring a bit hollower now.

One big free agent signing doesn't destroy what we have done over the years. Good scouting, draft and stash, D league development , 10 day contracts , veteran signings, UDFA.
All have never taken away from the core players and the way we run our organization. LMA will complement the Hall of Famers , Kawai and the key role players and not control or dominate the team like Shaq , Kobe , Carmelo, Iverson and LaBron.
Welcome LMA to your championship future.

Nope. Built motherfuckers...what they have built here got them the biggest FA prize this summer.

If we paid him more than everyone else, maybe. But we didn't. Plus "buy" teams are the big market teams. SA is hardly the team to go into the luxury tax. If signing a free agent is "buying" a team, then every team in the league fits that description.

Were the Spurs ever just built? Green, Diaw, Mills, and Marco were pretty important during that campaign. That was just an effective troll job cuz the Spurs won. Had they lost the whole thing would have been a non issue.

Read this thread titled "lol are the spurs still built not bought?" to see where they are saying this. I'm not saying it's not stupid. Just pointing out like many other threads do on this forum when other fanbases cry about the Spurs success. ST posters always link clutchfans when rockets fans are crying about the Spurs or lakersground when L.A. fans are getting salty.

Well, I guess it is up to the team now to show that they can win it all whether built or bought. The Spurs don't need to buy to win as their last 5 rings proves. Now, the Spurs can win it all just like everyone else does. They are just pissed because now the Spurs are part of the money game too.

:lmao who the fuck cares, tbh?

Do the Lakers lose all their rings because they bought their teams? Do the Celtics lose all their rings because they played in White leagues with 8 teams?

Nobody cares about how you win, as long as you do, obviously..

I don't think LMA can carry the team as Le Bron does. He is just one adition to the Spurs System, a stellar adition. But his effect in the team will be far from Le Bron impact in any team.

The only other way to compete is to win 18 games and then pick in the Top 3 in the draft.

Which way would you choose?

If we clear out the entire team to sign a multiple max players... then yes. But we've still drafted and/or developed Parker, Green, Leonard, Duncan... Might claim Boris given the state he arrived in after Charlotte.

Add to that Manu, Cojo...

That's built.

Front Office planned everything years ago ... not to get Aldridge, but to get one Max player from outside to smooth the end of Duncan's career. It was as beautiful as our 2014 ball movement ...

the construction of which started by having won a lottery... literally in 1997. Pop laid the foundation for said house, but that lottery gave us the cornerstone on which to build it...

RJ was from a trade of Bowen and Oberto. The biggest ones the Spurs have had that I remember are Fin and Dice.

Yeah, Fin was still pretty highly regarded when he came over. Nowhere near at the apex of his career like LaMarcus, but still considered a strong acquisition.

Dumb debate. Bought is like what Nets did a few years ago to build a competitive roster. It means buying a bunch of all stars and overpaying to get them and going over the cap. Spurs are far from that.

It's also not really a sensible debate since the Spurs have had no choice but to build up to this point, and as mentioned before, none of this would have mattered if they hadn't won the lottery twice. Nice to finally get a big-time free agent, but it doesn't suddenly invalidate everything that came before.

The "bought" tag would also imply that we were able to outbid teams to acquire LMA services when in fact we paid him less than he would have had in Portland and the same anywhere else. Still need to round out our roster too as we gave away some solid pieces.
