I figure they had to have drafted for insurance policy, hedge against their bet that they could sign LA. Drafting was viewed as necessary for them to trade away Tiago for cap space, which was a necessary part of their pitch to LA. So it was all part of a plan that worked out in the end. Smart moves on their part. Having everything work out as good as it possibly could though having some redundancy from the drafting of bigs is a much better outcome than not having LA sign, and having only Tim/Boris on the frontline because they didn't make that hedge.

I think the Spurs had a very good idea, possibly even already knew his decision (Aldridge), on draft night.

This team wasn't going to content next year if it had to rely on a bunch of draft picks for significant roster minutes. The last seven days have shown their hand (Aldridge, West, and next up will be a backup point).

Livio Jean-Charles is also coming over, and the front office had to have factored that in too.

At this point we've only "lost" CoJo. Don't think we're done with roster additions yet.

Yeah, the whole point of the pick was to not incur a cap hold for a player who would be in the NBA this season, which is directly related to the chase for Aldridge.

As it is, the Spurs are still close to having to do some more work to make Aldridge fit. That's not me, that was Zach Lowe this morning, who was talking about the Spurs perhaps needing to move Patty to get everything done:

A cap hold for a domestic prospect who would play this season would have almost certainly required shipping Mills out.

So, I can't imagine why anyone would think that the better course for the Spurs would have been to draft for a current need.
