OKC is really close to the tax... would be slightly surprised if they matched a significant/max offer

CROFL, after the Singler extension they're less than $3 million under the tax line if Kanter walks. At the lowest possible salary Kanter could take on a 4 year deal for $70 million, namely $16.5 million, they're about $13.5 million over the luxury tax.

The first $5 million they pay $1.50 per dollar, for $7.5 million in tax
The next $5 million they pay $1.75 per dollar, for $8.75 million in tax
The next $3.5 million they pay $2.00 per dollar, for $7.0 million in tax.

So signing Kanter will cost them $16.5 million in salary and $23.25 million in luxury tax. I don't know, is Kanter a $40 million player to you? :lmao

So the tightass who has never spent a cent in luxury tax and who let Harden walk for nothing useful is going to pay out $23.25 million in tax this year? I think you got a better hope at going 1&47 this year tbh.

Word is they're looking to salary dump PJ3, Augustin, and Novak which would shed almost $9m

Maybe they learned their lessons. And Harden hasn't exactly been much to write home about.

Obviously you're stove up over it and treating me less than quality so I'll leave you to yourself till the crisis passes.

OKC won't match, just like the lockets who refused to match Parsons' offer last year. Small markets have their own surviving rules and one of the rules is to avoid luxury tax at any cost.

They will match and dump salary... end up being only on the hook for about $7m in tax.

At least that's my hope, Kanter isn't worth 1/2 of that contract.

HarlemHeat37

They probably will in an attempt to persuade Durant/Westbrook to remain with the Thunder, I imagine..

Kanter is without a doubt the worst defensive big in the NBA. Compared to him Kevin Love looks like the 2nd coming of Dikembe Mutombo.

Either way, OKC takes a hit. They either lose a much-needed big and get weaker, or they pay the man to stay the same and sacrifice financial flexibility to bring in more talent.

Portland doing the Spurs all sorts of favors this summer. :tu

My money is on KD bolting and Russ staying so he can be "the man" in OKC.

OKC will Match as they won't have to pay the tax next year with the Cap increase.

Imagine, all this because the owner didn't want to eat 18 mil by amnestying Perkins to retain Harden.

If OKC lose Kanter, basically all they got from the Harden and Jackson trade is just Adams. That would be a real let down.

As of right now Kanter's deal costs them $40 million for 2015-16 thanks to how far over the tax limit they'd be. Unless they can find someone to take some significant subset of PJ3, Morrow, Novak, Augustin, Roberson, and Collison in a straight salary dump by tomorrow I'd be shocked to see them match.

You can be over the Tax entering the season without having to pay it. As long as OKC is under by the end of the regular season, they are fine, They will have to fire sale trades at the Trade deadline for sure, if not before then. OKC can match now and work on salary dumping later.

I don't know, that's a big risk to take if you can't make the necessary salary dumps.

They're between a rock and a hard place.

If they don't match, that could be enough to make KD walk next Summer. If they match, they're in salary cap hell if they can't fire sale a few players, and even then it damages their bench.

Mark Celibate

They should move to Vegas (where they'd get stupid asses buying their tickets whatever the price), OKC is not a basketball city to begin with tbh. Being located in a small market, they'll always lose good players for financial reasons, last time it was Harden and maybe next year it'll be Durant.
