TORONTO (AP) -- David Ortiz hit two home runs, including a drive in the 11th inning that gave the Boston Red Sox a 6-5 win over the Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night. :elephant

Manny Ramirez also homered for the Red Sox, who recovered after wasting a 5-0 lead and moved 3½ games ahead of the second-place New York Yankees in the AL East.

Ortiz hit a solo homer off Ted Lilly in the fourth before his go-ahead drive against Pete Walker (6-5), which gave him his eighth multihomer game this season. Ortiz has 40 homers, one short of the career high he set last year, and joined Carl Yastrzemski (1969 and '70) as the only Boston players with consecutive 40-homer seasons.

Jonathan Papelbon (1-1) pitched two innings for his first major league victory.

Toronto scored five runs in the seventh after Boston starter Bronson Arroyo allowed the first three batters to reach. Gabe Gross had an RBI single off Keith Foulke, Russ Adams hit a sacrifice fly off Foulke and Vernon Wells hit a three-run homer off Mike Timlin.

Ortiz's first homer hit off the scoreboard in right. just below the Hard Rock Cafe. After Ortiz singled in the sixth, Ramirez hit his 35th homer, a drive off the Windows restaurant in center field.

Boston increased the lead in the seventh on Edgar Renteria's RBI single and Ortiz's run-scoring grounder off Vinnie Chulk.

Arroyo allowed three runs and five hits in six-plus innings, tying his career-high with five walks.

Red Sox center fielder Johnny Damon didn't play because of a sore left shoulder. Damon got a cortisone shot after Friday night's game in New York, sat out Saturday and was Boston's designated hitter on Sunday.

Game notes
Damon has been playing with discomfort since hurting the shoulder on a slide the previous Sunday against Baltimore. ... Toronto 2B Orlando Hudson has missed four straight games because of sprained left ankle and manager John Gibbons said he won't be back before the weekend. Rookie Aaron Hill has played 2B in his place.

Sox up 5-3 in the 9th tonight as Big Papi just hit a 2 run shot with 2 outs in the 8th inning, his 2nd homer of the game.

I have $100 bet on the game, to try to break Boston out of their slump against the Blue Jays who have owned them this year....one more inning......DEFENSE!!!

BOSTON (AP) -- David Ortiz tied the game in the eighth inning with his 47th homer, then singled home the winning run in the ninth to give the Boston Red Sox a critical 5-4 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays on Thursday night. :elephant

Boston trailed 4-1 and a loss would have dropped the Red Sox two games back of New York in the AL East and one game behind Cleveland in the wild-card race.

Instead, the Red Sox enter their season-ending three-game series with the Yankees at Fenway Park trailing New York by one game, and they would leapfrog their rival to win the AL East by taking two of three.

Rookie Jonathan Papelbon (3-1) pitched 2 2-3 scoreless innings for the win, and Manny Ramirez hit a two-run homer in the sixth off Jason Frasor that cut the deficit to 4-3.

Ortiz homered off Vinnie Chulk leading of the eighth, and Miguel Batista (5-8) allowed a one-out single in the ninth to Johnny Damon, who stole second.

Edgar Renteria walked, and Ortiz lined a 3-2 pitch into the shortstop hole as Damon easily scored.

As he rounded first, Ortiz raised both arms to the sky and was mobbed by teammates. The crowd chanted "MVP! MVP!"

The Yankees beat Baltimore 8-4 Friday night for their 15th win in 18 games, while the Indians beat Tampa Bay 6-0.

Even the staunchest Boston hater has to admit that in the last year, Ortiz is the best clutch hitter in baseball.

This is his 6th walkoff hit :wow in the year, that is unheard of in baseball history.

Well, considering he is a huge with his RBI's.... it shouldn't be that surprising.

This year, Manny and Ortiz have 89 homers and 284 RBIs betw them. :wow

Manny and Ortiz are only the 2nd teammates in history to have back to back years with 40 HRs and 130 RBIs.

The only others??

Ruth and Gehrig.

If Boston beats NY twice and Cleveland wins 2 from Chicago this weekend, there will be 3 teams tied.

How would they break this tie?

I guess they have to have Boston and NY play on Monday to see who wins the East, then that loser would play Cleveland on Tuesday to break that tie....I guess...anyone know?

Damn Jim get your tongue out of Ortiz's asshole for a second.

The guy is a hitter...but that's about all he is. He's got nothing in the outfield and he can't even run.

If he were in any other league he'd be terrible because he wouldn't be able to do shit in the outfield.

Number 1, he played 1st base in the World Series and did not make an error, so he is not that bad at defense like you say.

Number 2, there are 75 players who are DH's or pinch hitters in MLB, and none of them can even come close to Ortiz's numbers or clutch hitting. If Ortiz was on any team that just missed making the post season, he would have gotten them in the post season...that is not even in question.

Duff, you really do not even watch baseball, so just stay out of any baseball conversations, because you really are out of the loop.
