View Full Version : Divine Treasury of Boban Marjanovic

Gortat is a hard cover for West- 1) Gortat is good and 2) West is giving up at least 4 inches
How many inches is Gortat giving up on Marjanovic?
Using your math, it seems like it is 6 inches.

Boban could have destroyed him if Pop kept him in the floor. +17 it wasn't like Gortat was sitting on the bench.

West is like 6'8 1/2" with a 7' 4" wingspan. Gortat is about 7'0". with a 7'3" wingspan. Boban is 7'3 1/2", 7'6" wingspan and a 9' 7 1/2" standing reach.
Gortat has about 3-4 inches on West. And Boban has bout 6-7 inches on Gortat. Boban has about over a foot on Blair (HA HA).

Everybody is a hard cover for West. He can't guard anyone bigger, and guys his size like Milsap and Randle went right through him too. Throw in his inability to help and contest at the rim and it's a problem.
West is the McDyess to Boban's Splitter.

So if West is a revolving door, shouldn't Spurs just play Bonner. At least he can space the floor!

It's not a bad idea, I think Bonner might be better on defense.
West might be, fit-wise, the 6th best big on the team.
But because he gave up so much money, and has such a good reputation, he's flat out bulletproof. No matter how bad he looks with. the eye test or the numbers, team defense or man, West is untouchable it seems.
Gortat had his season high, vast majority against West, and it was easy for him.

The guy forced his way into the Spurs. Now Spurs have to make use of him when other options may be better. Let's hope he doesn't cost the Spurs a championship.

He won't. Pop will go with whomever the best matchup. West isn't costing the Spurs games at this point. Let him develop some more while giving Boban some playing time as well.
I rather see West more at this point so Boban can be more rested for the playoffs. West had a couple of nice buckets on Gortat as well and he also did well rebounding yesterday.

Tyler was likely staring at boban ears tbh. He dunked on 7'7 Kenny george in college so he's seen bigger then boban.
Only guy like him in the NBA with his size and talent is Fatboy Gasol who is more skilled in the NBA game at this point. Everyone else is either shorter or thinner.
There might be someone on a bench somewhere but they can't play like the Bobanator.

Anyway last night was HUGE for Boban moving forward. Pop was looking for a spark in the first half for a Washington team who had been giving his squad fits.
Enter the Bobanator!
A man that big should not be able to run the floor like that, swivel his hips like that, or move his feet that quick. The touch on the shot; the brute strength. He beat the crap out of their bench and when they brought their starters back in he was beating their ass too. Gortat didn't know what to do with him.
Who knows what kind of promises or plans Popovich actually has but Boban couldn't have made a stronger case for playing time. He changed the game.

Let's be honest, despite his dominance in Europe he had a lot of flaws. He honestly looks like his improving a lot with the Spurs.
The other interesting thing I saw against the Wizards is that he was going out into the perimeter to double the ball handler. I had thought that this would be a problem given his foot speed. However, apparently that's what the PATFO wants him to do.
Final though, Manu pick and roll with Boban, very difficult to stop.

Trying not to get the anointing oil so soon, but it's hard not too.. RC and Pop appear to have done it again.. On top of the soft shooting touch, his passing (especially from one hand in the post) has looked to be on point, and he has seemed to get a decent amount of love from the officials despite being ginormous

You just have the discipline to wait a couple years before drawing any generalized conclusions.
The main concern for me was 'would he be able to move his feet fast enough with that frame to be effective.' He can. You can tell he works hard in the gym and movements are starting to look a little polished and thus that much quicker.
I won't anoint him a success but I will say that he is more than athletic enough for a bench role and his play against Gortat was encouraging towards a higher ceiling. He now looks like he might have a shot to play C competently when the legend finally decides to hang it up.
His ceiling is pretty friggin high. Is Fat Gasol more athletic than him you think?

I'm glad that Boban has Tim to learn from. 39-year-old Tim Duncan is still an elite defender even though he really can't defend a well-executed PnR. Boban will likely never be a good PnR defender, but if he can improve enough at everything else on defense he can still be a plus on that end.
Boban's ability to do that and learn how to run the PnR properly on offense are what will determine the success of his NBA career.

He basically cooled off Gortat. And those blocks at the rim last night is what I expect to see more of in the future.
Had a couple of mistakes on his rotations. But compared to his play in the preseason, it was like night and day out there.
For sure.
He seemed more comfortable catching the ball and going immediately into a shot or pass.
Before, he seemed so insecure on what to do, that it allowed others to swarm him and when he put the ball down, it was stolen.
He has improved, he seems more comfortable and confident out there. Guys enjoy playing with him too. You can tell chemistry is developing.
I actually wonder if Pop deciding to give minutes to Anderson was for both Boban and Anderson's chemistry. They have developed good chemistry since the preseason, and playing all those garbage time minutes together.
A future bench of Mills/Simmons/Anderson/Diaw/Boban sounds actually fun to watch.

Boban really needs to get some more PT he could be huge in the playoffs against teams like the Rockets with big frontcourts. Yes he is pretty much unplayble against the likes of teams such as the Warriors. But he has his matchups he could be very helpful in.

The real issue with Boban's lack of playing time could be due to potential injury. Splitter in his first year also barely played. It takes a while to adjust to the grind of the NBA and Spurs are best served if Boban is available come playoff time.

Tim/LMA/Boris/West are going to play no matter the opponent but Boban would be Pop's secret weapon against the Clippers bench (Josh Smith playing center:lol) & Kyle would be useful against the Warriors small-ball line-up. Who knows. Maybe he's got a small penis? If he had one to match his size he'd be backing guys in quickly after a quick surveillance of the court around him. He'd be looking to score dunks every time he has the ball instead of soft floaters (which he's good at, but still).

Appears that Boban has a pretty good work ethic. He wasn't drafted, but he's worked hard to improve his skills. Really coming up from nowhere to become MVP for a couple of seasons in a minor European league. Read somewhere that the Lakers were also interested, but Boban saw the advantages of going under the Spurs system. Spurs also have a much better reputation for European players compared to other NBA teams.
There may be luck too in that the Spurs may have targeted Tavares with the Splitter trade. If Hawks had given his rights then we wouldn't be seeing Boban in a Spurs jersey.
Finally, you cannot discount player development with the Spurs. The best in the league in creating a player out of a nobody.

Actually the top two teams in Serbia have faired very well of late in the Euro Cup. Serbian League isn't as good as the ACB or Greek leagues, but its right there with the Italian/Turkish league, which is a tier below. It was rumored that Barca wanted to sign Boban this year as well.
Boban was the MVP of the Euroleague tournament last year, Serbian League Finals MVP and the 3x Serbian league MVP. Reminds me of Manu accolades before he came over to play for the Spurs.
Boban has proven he can play against starters as well.

I find it funny how every time Boban got the ball, especially off the PNR, nobody picked him up. This has everything to do with how well Boban passes. Everytime he touches the ball he always fakes a pass or is looking to pass. I guess the T'Wolves were bent on not giving up the 3 ball to the Spurs as they guard the 3 pretty well last night. They kept biting on Boban's fakes and he had a lot of easy buckets. Once Boban learns to master rotating and hedging the PnR on D, he is going to be awesome player. He has already improved a ton in that dept. since the preseason, but I still see areas he still needs to improve.

Article on Boban in ESPN
http://espn.go.com/blog/san-antonio-spurs/post/_/id/314/boban-marjanovic-makes-impact-in-spurs-win
Some quotes:
Danny:
We've seen what he can do in practice," "He's getting better and better each day. He's obviously a big guy. He's really a gentle giant, and he's always apologizing. I think he's getting more aggressive now, being more physical, taking the ball from people, moving people out the way, and finishing inside. He's always had good touch. But it was just [a matter of] him catching the ball and being assertive.
"It's interesting to see him do anything," "Anytime he's in the game, it still surprises me. I get excited anytime he dunks the ball without jumping, or blocks a shot or how mobile he is. I think it excites the crowd, too. He's a fan favorite already. Anything he does at his size I think is always pretty exciting and interesting."
Messsina:
"He impacted the game well in both stretches he played," "I think not only with his game, but also because he got the crowd involved. He got teammates involved. Also psychologically, it helped him. I am very happy. When he started playing at the beginning of the year, he was more of an attraction. Now, people understand that he is a valuable basketball player that of course has a lot to work on, but he also has some upside in his game. He is one more player we can trust and rely on."
West:
"I think people look at his size and sort of think he's a big stiff," "But Boban's a hell of a player." Marjanovic "gave us a huge boost" with "just his IQ and his size."
Boban:
"I try to be useful," "I try to help my teammates, and they help me with the offense," "It's good. We play together, and they use my height, and I feel comfortable when I go out on the court. I'm very happy because I'm a part of this team."

Boban only plays in garbage time for the most part, so of course he didn't play in most of our losses as they were close games.

Well there's also the possibility for him to play in *garbage time* when the Spurs are on the "garbage" end of the score board, you know... ?
Also, he was in a few close games early, tbh

The most recent Timberwolves games was close through the end and Boban played real minutes. Actually outscoring LMA who didn't have a particularly good game. He didn't close out that game, but he played real minutes and was a positive impact player. Many games were like that, the most recent Wizards' game, Td sat as well and the game didn't become a blowout until the 4th Q. He has talent, size, length, BBIQ and is still learning how to play in this league.
13 points in 13 minutes.
Can someone answer this question. How many games have we lost this year in which Boban has played?
I don't think it proves anything, but the answer is one game.
Here's the deal. No NBA team is going to just allow him to keep catching the ball in the paint and throwing it down. He's going to have to learn more ways to get himself into that position. The rest of the team is going to have to learn ways to get the ball to him in the deep post. I know he looks unstoppable at times, but if they tried to use him that way, he wouldn't be. You notice that you're seeing him on the floor several times a game now. The other teams are experimenting with ways to handle him, and they're being physical as hell for starters. And he appears to only be good for 15-20 minutes right now, and about 6-7 minutes at a stretch.
I almost hate to mention this, but I was calling for the Spurs to sign him back in the summer, before most people ever heard his name. I only mention that to say that I like the guy. I liked him enough to hope the Spurs would give him a shot. I wanted to see him come in against Dwight Howard, but not because I think he could out-play Howard. I think he's big and strong enough to get into Howard's head, if he plays physical against him. I think he could get Howard off his game for the rest of the night. And I really hope Pop tries using him that way, because he's not just big, he's strong.
But I still think that if he had to try and match skill-for-skill against the good centers in the league, they would use their experience to get around him, or to feed their teammates easy looks. I'd just like to see him improve enough to get some legit minutes in the playoffs. And to be developed enough that when the other team throws their starter back in, Pop doesn't immediately have to sub. If that happens, Pop will be able to keep Tim fresh and at his best. And Tim is still the defensive anchor of this team.
Just my opinion.
Games where Duncan or another big sat are the only ones he played in while the game was close.
We have only had one loss by 10 or more points and surprise surprise thats the one loss Bobi played in.
Be fair - Boban only played 3 minutes in that game, and the most he had played at that point was about 4 1/2 minutes. One thing he's not is responsible for any of the losses.
I really like Boban. I was just stating that UNT was cherry picking stats by saying Boban only played in 1 loss. Let's be honest Boban hasn't been responsible for victory or loss in any game so far. UNT wanted to cherry pick stats, nuh uh, not on my watch.

Boban was the reason the Spurs won that game. Had the biggest +/- for the team that game and like PER of 30+. And the game against Washington as well. Spurs were having fits guarding Gortat until Boban was inserted into the lineup. Spurs blew the game open after that. And against Philly, the Spurs had a 25+ point lead and it ballooned to 50 with Boban on the floor.
No doubt the guy is an impact type of player due to the reason mentioned in the post above.

Boban clearly has an impact with maintaining or expanding the lead against other teams. He's able to score and if he's in position, his defense is impenetrateable.
Quickness is of course his Kryptonite. Boban hasn't figured out how to recover quickly if he's out of position.
However, he's definitely better than Baynes. Baynes got dunked on even when he had good position!

Holy shit. I know why he did the staredown now. That was a bitchass gay move by Evans grabbing Boban's dick on the way down. He lucky he only got a staredown. I knew Evans had to do something to Boban because Boban doesn't just do that out of nowhere.
Also, what's with opponents grabbing the dicks of our players? Remember Smart and Bonner last year? I guess we just some long dick niggas.

Why do people think that people go crazy over Boban b/c he is a Circus act. Knicks fan go crazy over Kristap as well.
You just don't expect a 7'3" 1/2 almost 300 lb guy to pass, shoot, and move that well. Boban man handles people. He makes them look like little kids to JV players out there. That is fun to watch. The NBA really hasn't had a player like Boban since the decline of Shaq. I have to say I like Boban b/c he is different. But not a circus act different. Guys like Simmons, who I think is exciting as well, are far more common than players like Boban. Boban provides that shock and awe because you just don't expect and very rarely see a guy that big play that fluidly. You expect Mosgov type of player. I think LMA has best reactions on the bench when it comes to Boban (also watch Mavs highlights). Like the last play of the video. Dude, I don't think any another player on this team could have made that shot, or the very least made that shot look so smooth. This is why people love Boban TBH.

Here is the highlights from last night's game. It was a disappointing 1st half and that wasn't Boban's fault. I counted about 4x Boban had established positioned deep in the paint on his man and for some reason no one fed him the ball. They didn't start doing that until the 4th quarter. I guess Pop didn't want Boban going for like 30 last night.

Is this Boban's first double-double?
Indeed unstoppable in the paint. Defense has to put a body on him and that frees up the lane.
It is crazy how the Spurs just blowout teams. Spurs just took 14 3 point attempts and they still score 117 points and blow out the Suns by nearly 30 points. It's like when the US team plays internationally. Most games are just blowouts.

Feel sorry for Chandler... his legs might have felt like Jello come the fourth quarter.
Even if Boban never gets the ball on offense, his constant pressure takes a toll on any defender.
Spurs have such a deep bench that I hope they exploit that in the playoffs by just wearing down the opponent.

1) He looks lost in certain sets on defense. Particularly now in horns and in helping the helper.
2) He is a rookie.

Still tops, but I disagree with the "all," and making the minimum the mere 295 minutes to eliminate two Spurs Marcus Williams and Ian Mahinmi, and this years Clipper Jeff Ayres:
For single seasons; in the regular season; from 1946-47 to 2015-16; requiring Minutes Played >= 295; sorted by descending Win Shares Per 48 Minutes.
.339 1952-1953 Al Cervi (339)
.301 1968-1969 Rick Barry (1361) (As a Spurs fan, I will not discount the ABA).
Marjanovic compares better to the excluded Cervi.
OTOH, Cervi is a Hall of Famer.

He definitely look a lot better out there defensively. His D on the pNr improved since the last time he had any substantial minutes, which it seems like more than 2 weeks+ since he gotten any meaningful minutes. And his D on Cousins was great. Cousins was killing Diaw and West, but Boban was shutting him down. His length and strength were noticeably bothering Cousins, who I think is the best offensive C in the league.

Great to have him back if true. Could do a lot worse as your 4th/5th big man with the talent on offense he has shown. Great teammate, and person to have around during the grind of a long regular season. Him and his family seem to love the city, so I don't think he wanted to get away from an environment that he is comfortable in and cherishes him.
Seems to have a great work ethic, and hopefully he at least improves on his rebounding this offseason using his body a lot better. Could be used in certain crucial matchups....if he's played properly.

That was a wild ride of a thread but always seemed like a wish list at best. I didn't believe for a moment that was a possibility.
I did believe the possibilities of Tim and Manu retiring, so maybe they make moderate additions in FA, pay Boban, add Bertans, Cady, count on improvement from Anderson/Simmons, draft the BPA (hopefully a guard) and call it an off-season. I have been saying ppl would be disappointed here.
I did think Boris was a potential target for a trade but then he came out saying Spurs wish to keep him, so there you go. We are probably adding role players this off season and counting on internal improvement, which is fine bc that is how the 2014 championship team was built. You need some cheap young players to get better and contribute.
A significant addition could be made in 2017 probably
