here are some comments:
As Crvena Zvezda fan, from Serbia, I can answer any question you guys have.
I watched almost every game in the last couple of seasons Bobi played for us.
First of all, he is a great guy, great teammate.
Second, almost all of this videos are from 2013/2014, where he showed some promise, but not from his breakout season 2014/2015.

Hello, i am also a Red Star fan and i hope to answer all of the question about him.
First of all, he played alot of ICE defence on the pick and roll. In Red Star, he usually gives more ground for the opposing player to take the mid range jumper but he can defend the pick and roll in ICE defense very effectivly and in the Euroleague he managed to contain alot of good PG’s in the pick and roll. I dont know his wingspand but it is huge and it is really difficult to get a shot over him.
He is mobile for his size – keep in mind, he is no Yao Ming but for his size he is mobile, and he can run the pick and roll, if he gets the ball in the paint close to the basket its money for him. But his real strenght is his post up game which is excellent and i cant see it not to translate to the NBA level simply because of his size. He has a soft hand and jump hook and he also has a couple of pump fakes in his arsenal. He is also a willing passer – not quite there yet but because of all the double teams they have been sending against him this season he had to pick it up fast. He is also a terrific FT shooter and he can knock down the mid range jumper. He didnt take too many of them simply because he cannot do anything else if he has the ball at the free throw line but if he is left open he will shoot it and it is pretty realiable. He also does not box out because it is hard to do that at that size but he is so big and his hands are so big he just picks up the ball on defense, and on offense if nobody boxes him out it is his ball and it usually end with him either getting fouled or getting the putback.
You will also love his personality. He is a very nice guy, a gentle giant, and a great teammate.
The problems with him is that he will probably get bullied by strong centers down in the low post who can push him into the paint, he will also probably struggle against explosive guards, he is a bit slow and clunky, but i think he is a low risk – high reward center. He was very dominant in the Euroleague and he bullied Milutinov in both the Adriatic league and the Serbian league. I think he really belongs in the NBA and i am happy that he is in San Antonio and that he will be great with both Diaw and LMA playing alongside him.

I watched Marjanović a lot in the adriatic league and in the euroleague last couple of seasons and i also had the opportunity to watch Baynes while he was in europe in those leagues. What i can say without a doubt that Marjanović for Baynes is Hakeem from his best days. Boban is a late bloomer, two years ago he was just a tall guy, now he has developed extremely in the last couple of seasons. He was MVP of first part of a season in Euroleague, he developed his post up game, he doesn’t jump very high but he really doesn’t need to, he will secure rebounds easy and can intimidate guards going to the basket on defensive end. I think it’s a steal to have him for 2m for one year and most definetly he is upgrade over Baynes
those are GODLY numbers in the euroleague. Tiago’s stats were less impressive than that in european competition.

I really like this sign, will see how his game translate to the nba with more big guys than in euroleague

What i like is that he have good hands and with his height he would probably be effective in the nba

I think that the Spurs are ahead of the time when it comes to scouting talent and analytics (example: corner three). RC told Zach Lowe in a podcast that they follow games in Serbian league for example. Also, nobody can guarantee that he will succeed in NBA, there is always a risk.

Nope! Serbian women are fierce and very proud. Fame has more appeal than money to them, but make no mistake she's the boss at home. They'll go after money, but not out of desperation.

Pop and RC (and the whole Spurs org) are very respected in Europe. They are considered an NBA franchise who takes genuine chances on non US players and the one organisation where foreign players have a level playing field. For that reason I am sure they are getting a lot more info and early intel on players' developments. Coaches are more likely to recommend their projects to franchises where they'll get an honest chance.

"We need Boban in top physical condition for his 36 game appearances this season. How in the heck are we supposed to manage the last 2 minutes of 20 point blowouts this season, or the last 35 seconds of a half after Tim or LaMarcus pick up their 3rd foul! I think it is more of a lack of quickness and mobility. I think you surround him with a lot of quick athletic guys help rebound. But he's pretty good at being able to screen out the opposing center from getting the ball. Let him do this and let the other guys pick up the rebound.

People seem to forget that when they put his on the court, the team rallied back. They took him out also, and then the Kings built up a lead. It was obvious that the Kings were intimidate with his presence. Even Marco had made a terrible shot with Boban just right in front of him and not really contesting the shot. Marco's shot almost missed the rim entirely.

His north to south speed is pretty damn good. That was one of the pros I first noticed about him when I watched highlights of him this summer. Normally, men his size have the stride, but have no speed. It's fluid running. Even his pick n roll quickness was surprising good.

He usually has pretty good hands. You could see that the chemistry just wasn't there with the guards on all the pick and rolls. Don't forget that he just recently started practicing with the rest of the team.

agree regarding his hands ... his rebounding might not translate that well into the NBA as the players are more athletic here and in the few minutes he played it looked like people easily outjumped him to get a rebound. but I want to see more of him :hungry:

I don't think it's foolish, since it's one of the main deal breakers when it comes to oversized players. Fumbling balls, foot injuries, incapability to make a ft, fouling, lack of agility.

I don't think it's foolish, since it's one of the main deal breakers when it comes to oversized players. Fumbling balls, foot injuries, incapability to make a ft, fouling, lack of agility. There's a lot of tape of the dude showing pretty good hands.

But he displayed great hands all throughout his time in Europe. If you read scouting reports on him you almost always hear mention of his soft hands. It really doesn't make sense to throw out everything he's shown in the past and instead choose to focus on 10 minutes of basketball where he looked like he had stone hands.

Hopefully the fumbling was due to him not being familiar with his new team so not knowing when to expect a pass and from where.

I didn't say anything like that, just that we need to take notice. And anyway, it's easier to dribble in europe, players reach much less.

Nba players are faster and bigger so they can close the gaps easier which gives him less room to maneuver anyway.

Overall, I think it was an intriguing start for the giant. How he learns to compensate for the higher level of play will be the key to his success.

First of all, if he gets the lob or high pass, he needs to not bring the ball down. No way anyone can get to the ball if it's over his head.

I am really excited to watch him play some more with Diaw, Kyle, and Manu, just in general there are a lot of guys capable of setting him up in that second unit. I saw some of the "wall defense" in last game, where perimeter players just stayed in front of their man, not channeling him specifically to Boban. There were a lot of experimental things that you could see in that second unit to close out the game last Thursday. I really liked what they were doing with him, and see the potential.

Willie Cauley Stein is just a tremendous athlete. I love him so much, he showed not only his athleticism but awareness of where his guys were making good passes from offensive rebounds. He has a lot of potential. Someone did need to box him out. lol

Man "Objective" was spot on about this dude! If he can stay healthy I think he can make a major impact with the second unit. Again props to "Objective" for posting about this guy as a potential Spur. Hope you can come to SA to see your man play

I am a huge fan of him already. I really liked what I saw in his short time on the court. I think those fumbled passes were due to nerves mostly. One of the things in his scouting report was that he had really good hands. I do not expect those fumbled passes to be the standard for him. If he gets the ball anywhere near the basket, it is almost an automatic 2 points. His defense was extremely surprising to me. I didn't think that he would be able to keep up with the speed of the NBA, but he quickly let people know that they cannot attack him at the rim so easily. His length should help him in defending the PnR allowing him to sag a bit further back than most centers to compensate for potential slow feet.

Long story short, this performance made me set the bar a bit higher for him now because he didn't even need to jump to tear down the bar I originally set.

Exactly... that was a bad pass, but at the same time, I fully expected Boban to catch it. There were worse passes he caught in Euroball. I really think it was just nerves.

The pass from Jimmer wasn't fumbled out of bounds carelessly like Ayres. It was a great play by WCS who knocked it out of his hands and off Boban's body. Yes, Boban should have been stronger with the grip, but at least he wasn't losing it for no reason.

He moved better than I remember, and that's coming off a relatively short time of practice clearance where he probably still isn't in great basketball shape. It kind of makes me wonder how long he was playing through the foot pain. I remember it being reported as being a playoff thing, but maybe it had earlier origins.

Still a liability on defense on pick and rolls. Needs to set better picks. Needs to get used to hire NBA refs call games. Needs to work on boxing out. But overall I'm overall pretty happy,

And you should be happy. That was a great call by you. Even if Dangubic never comes over, that trade has paid dividends.

I see Boban + Kyle Anderson will be a nice combination in offense and in defence. If Kyle works on his drives, pairing him with Boban will make them really dangerous

Really think this is Anderson's block. Ball's moving to the side before Boban even gets his arm extended.

Good call! I love seeing KA get after it defensively, really liking this kids chances to be an impact player sooner rather than later. Especially against other benches...

Yeah I am probably most excited about Anderson than any other spur. Including LMAlpha.

He is already top 10 smartest player in the league. Here's to hoping he has a groundbreaking season

Yep. Anderson is a sneaky Mfer. His tempo messes with opponents. I'm excited for him coming off the bench with consistent minutes.

Boban had a rough game. He's a project, and seems like he will need his time. The most concerning is the rebounding.

Yeah...he's not going to do much this season beyond mop up duty and some help on back to backs...and it will likely take a whole season for him to figure it all out(if he does). The Spurs offense relies on fluidity and right now he's just out there thinking too much. The speed issue won't be near as big once he gets a more natural feel of the offense and gets some chemistry developed. Whether or not he can become decisive mentally will make or break him because he sure as hell isn't getting any faster.

Rebounding is looking more like a concern. He needs to go after it aggressively if he expects to rebound in the NBA. With him being so tall, you know the other NBA players are just itching to go at him and snatch the board away. Aside from that, his defense seems passable. He was thrown in a few PnR situations, but it looked like he handled it better than expected.

He looks like he panics on offense. Perhaps he needs to stop putting so much pressure on himself and just play fucking basketball. Dude looks scared when he touches the ball.
