First the big dog, he has some more in the tank to offer spurs. he would not be a young solution but clearly would make spurs a powerhouse. midrange jumpshot is a killer. He is still in the mix:

Sept. 13, 2005

By Justin Breen / Post-Tribune staff writer

Robinson, who is a free agent after winning his first NBA championship with the San Antonio Spurs, has yet to find a new team.

Tucker said the Spurs, as well as the Miami Heat, have called him.

“We’re trying to see what those teams are going to do,” Tucker said. “Hopefully, he’ll sign in the next couple of weeks.”

-------------------------------------------------------
Then we have melvin Sanders, the revelation from summer league cancelled his contract in europe to come back in the nba. Portland might be on it too. Great defender but like devin too small to replace bowen but nice athletes to develop and maybee good 2guard bench material.

It was stated in another thread that Melvin Sanders had signed in Spain (actually Italy) but he was released by Siena on August 31st by mutual agreement, so that he could return to the United States. Hmmm.

--------------------------------------------------------
Matt Barnes,
he said he would play for sacramento or Spurs. both teams were close to tax limit and had a spot left for a young backcourt player. both teams are interested in barnes that worked out for spurs several days few weeks ago.

the rumor in sacramento is
Luis Flores close to a deal with Sacramento Kings. - Sep. 12, 2005 - by Jaime Gomez
Luis Flores (188-G-81, college: Manhattan) is close to signing a deal with the Sacramento Kings. Flores worked out on Saturday and Sacramento´s executives were very impressed with what they saw. Sources say that they´re still working around some figures but the deal should be made early this week. Flores would join Francisco Garcia (201-F-81, college: Louisville) and would become the first couple of dominican players playing in the same team in the NBA.

so now it looks like sacramento went another way. and they also have daniels as a free agent. this news increase the chance of being able to sign barnes

-------------------------------------------------
In conclusion spurs have Glenn robinson, matt barnes and melvin sanders all three positioned to join the spurs for minimum contracts.
we need at least one more wing and maybee 2 if holt signs the cheque.
melvin is the young defensive stud but small. glenn is the old midrange killer able to defend when asked but... and barnes a possible bowen replacement.

WHO WILL BE IN ?

I'll take Big Dogg just to prevent him from going to Miami...
the problem will be if he can accept his limited playing role....

big dog and barnes for me i think. Big Dog would have a full year to work his ass off. Ot would be his last shot at a contract, thats a scary thing to have playing for you. The competition for him i.e. Miami can't really offer more money or court time either.

Barnes in long, athletic and young. The kid has talent and could really be a strong role player in the future.

Barnes fits the Spurs' system moreso than Robinson though Robinson's game and experience would be very nice to have at Pop's disposal on the bench.

Miami has their full MLE. The Spurs could offer Robinson a 1 year minimum deal with the carrot of having his Early Bird rights next offseason. Maybe, just maybe, Glenn Robinson for the minimum would be cheap enough for Holt Cat.

The Spurs can only enter the season with a maximum of 15 players and they have 13 under contract now. I like the idea of signing either Barnes or Big Dog for one slot because they are both guys who can defend smaller 4s, particularly Big Dog. Glenn slid to the 4 several times last season. Having someone who can swing from 3 to 4 is a nice matchup solver occasionally. Big Dog showed a knack for blocking and contesting shots as a help defender, too.

Sanders is more of a 2/3 like Devin is.

Adding Sanders for one slot and Barnes or Glenn Dog for the other for minimum contracts would be optimum but they would still be IR insurance players. Sanders would likely end up playing for Dennis Johnson in Austin part of the season.

No, no more swingmen needed. Holt Cat's gotta feed his grandkids.

you never get tired, do you?

It is nearly a given they will carry a 14 player roster at least. and as solidD explained you want to have to more wings for training camp at least to have 3 full teams.

plus, the spurs might move some pieces along the way to a 4th title. In this sens i completly agree with

It would be just perfect offseason.

Why don't you just got root for the Mavericks or Blazers if you are infatuated with having a team whose owner shells out whatever the players want since he wants to be their friend and not their boss. Holt is a businessman. The NBA is a business. Why can't you understand that?

Marcus Bryant

Marcus doesn't post to curry favor or receive praise. That's the stuff of T Park.

Sooner or later some of you will see what is going on. When ownership starts fucking with the basketball people, the results aren't going to be good, especially given what Pop and RC have been able to accomplish.

Some of you are confusing the Spurs' success with Holt Cat. They've succeeded to the extent that he's allowed Pop and RC to do their jobs with minimal interference from the front office.

Ah yes, Holt Cat's a businessman so that makes him immune from criticism. :rolleyes

Too bad that great businessman operates a team that he expects fans to pay to see. Since he wants my money then I am free to criticize him when he fucks with the team. Also, seeing as how he is mooching off the local government he is certainly not immune from blame.

Why can't you understand that being a fan doesn't mean you have to kiss the ownership's ass?

the thread was about adding wings to the rotation at minimum salary. Barnes, sanders and robinson could all fit this mold. If barnes. or a combination of sanders and glenn or barnes is signed i do not see how we can cry that ownership prevent us from having a good summer

player lost: mike wilks, tony massenburg, devin brown, glenn robinson
player added: NVE, Oberto, Finley, barnes?

it looks like a good summer to me...

That comment is rather ironic, considering that the Spurs are subsidized heavily by the league in the form of the lux tax system and by Bexar County in the form of the arena deal.

Try again.

Which professional sports team isn't subsidized? Which bond issue to build a stadium or arena wasn't democratically voted upon by the voting citizens?

Marcus Bryant
09-13-2005, 02:16 PM
Doesn't matter.

Anyways, the Spurs are also subsidized within the league. Some of you act as though the Spurs would have to cough up the extra cash for however slightly they went over the lux tax threshold for the 2005-06 season to retain Brown. However, all that would have meant was that they wouldn't have gotten as big of a lux tax 'rebate'. Yes, there's no difference from an financial POV, but people need to realize that the Spurs do not pay the full cost of their payroll. Other teams pay a significant part. Also, the Spurs will not lose their entire share of the lux tax distributions should they go over the threshold. That, plus the sweetheart arena deal, should be more than enough to provide Holt Cat et al with an acceptable return even after retaining Brown. Plus, the deep playoff runs the Spurs have made over the last few seasons result in yet more revenues coming in as well as broader national and international exposure, which means even more revenue growth.

Lest we forget that the value of the Spurs continues to increase as they remain competitive and win championships, as well as broaden their appeal internationally. The real value in pro sports teams tends to come on the exit rather than in periodic cash flow. And for whatever reason, the value of pro sports teams seems less tied to periodic stable and growing cash flows than in other industries.

So, boo hoo that Holt Cat might have to shell out a few crumbs to keep a talented young player at a cheap price.

I do not understand why so many of you are reluctant to accept what is rather obvious. Maybe you don't want to admit that someone is taking advantage of you and your family.

There is one way to solve your perceived abuse by Holt Cat. Stop going to the games. If you can convince enough like minded people to not buy Spurs tickets Holt will be force to sell or move the team and end this tyranny and your agony.

Soon enough, the cheapness of the ownership group will hurt the Spurs on the court so that the average fan understands what has happened. The most surefire way will be when the Spurs don't emerge from a postseason as the champs.

If the Spurs stop winning, then they will suffer somewhat from a loss in the revenue growth that comes from attracting bandwagon fans worldwide, as well as from all of the postseason revenue that accompanies a title run. Perhaps that will be enough to get Holt Cat's attention.

The Spurs will falter if and when Duncan gets older, less effective and to a lesser extent Ginobili does and if the Spurs haven't been able to replace them with superstar/star level players or at least very promising players fans can build their hopes around becoming franchise level players. It has absolutely zero to do with retaining 8th to 12th men off the bench like Devin.

Marcus Bryant
09-13-2005, 02:35 PM
You need a supporting cast just as much as you need great players. Brown would've been ahead of Barry in the rotation last postseason. That would have made him at worst the 8th man on the team. It's not that hard to see Brown as a regular member of the rotation long term.

Maybe the Spurs will be able to find some youth on the perimeter to replenish it over the course of the next few seasons. After all, that's always been easy for the Spurs to do.

Marcus Bryant
09-13-2005, 02:38 PM
Anyways, the Spurs just lost talent for nothing in return. That alone is unacceptable, lux tax, limited minutes, stacked roster or whatever.

Factor in the age and short contracts of the swingman rotation, the fact that the Spurs only have 4 swingmen currently, and that the Spurs will be capped out for some time going forward and 1 year at $2.5 million looks like nothing.

Which is what it is in the NBA. I can't believe how many of you are so quick to defend such an obviously horrid basketball decision by the team.

Welcome back. Tonight's guests promise to be quite entertaining.

Ladies and Gentlemen, Zsa Zsa Gabor...

http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/graphics/zsazsa.jpg

When Zsa Zsa Gabor appeared on the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson one evening, she sat in the guest chair with her Persian cat in her lap. When she asked, "Johnny, would you like to pet my pussy?" Carson responded, "Sure, if you move that damn cat out of the way!"

Yes, it never really happened. (http://www.snopes.com/radiotv/tv/zsazsa.htm)

The Spurs didn't lose him for nothing. They got Finley and made it very apparent to Devin that he would not be retained if Finley was signed. The Spurs in essence would have been paying him $5.0 for that year with the lux tax penalty and you fail to mention Devin's back problems that he may never fully recover from. Notice he wasn't commanding a whole lot of attention on the open market. Why would you pay $5.0M for your 5th swingman whose back may never recover when that position is the easiest position to find good role players for cheap prices.

Marcus Bryant

So next summer when Finley walks, NVE retires and a 57 year old Brent Barry is the Spurs' only reserve swing, will cheering for the $ Holt Cat saved be that fulfilling?

And yes, they lost him for nothing. They could have had him and Finley.
