Wanna see Simmons starting and checking Vaughn the whole time. His chance at unseating Anderson for that last rotation spot relies on him being able to be an above-average defender. He could also stand to shoot more.

I think he will start. I'd guess the only reason he didn't start yesterday was because he joined the team so late.

Hammon chips away at barrier by leading SpursIt was almost as if the basketball gods were unsure and skeptical about this whole idea of a woman coaching an NBA game. Why else would the gods give Becky Hammon the ball in the final 25 seconds against the Knicks with her team down three points in her NBA head coaching debut in the Summer League?

That meant Hammon had to prove herself pronto. She had to draw up an important play for the Spurs while everyone surely watched intently, no different than needing to perform an emergency root canal on your first day out of dental school.

BatManu20

Yea I'd be pretty surprised if Simmons didn't start this game. I want to see him shoot it a bit more as well. He shot it at a 40% clip from 3 last year in Austin so he obviously has the ability. Let it fly man.

GreggPopAsnitch
07-12-2015, 02:57 PM
Is it possible that KA and Simms can both make the roster?

ace3g
07-12-2015, 03:00 PM
The main thing I liked about Simmons' game last night, he knows he has the ability to get to the rim whenever (at least against this competition) but doesn't get over aggressive and will pass to the open man. Looks to be a legit 6'6 - 6'7 and can put up decent rebound numbers as well.

07-12-2015, 03:00 PM
Is it possible that KA and Simms can both make the roster?

Yes, and it's pretty likely that ends up being the case.

okay thanks because some people made it seem otherwise.

I expect Simmons to score 10,000 points. At minimum.

SpursFan86
07-12-2015, 03:05 PM
okay thanks because some people made it seem otherwise.

If you're referring to how some people are talking about them competing against each other, they're probably just referring to the backup SF spot. They'll most likely both be on the team this season, but who gets those backup 3 minutes will depend on who proves to be the most capable.

ace3g

TXstbobcat
07-12-2015, 03:07 PM
okay thanks because some people made it seem otherwise.

The 1st year of Simmons contract is fully guaranteed but it wouldn't cost that much to release him during the season if he doesn't workout or if the Spurs want to go after a player that another team buys out.

Nathan89
07-12-2015, 03:21 PM
Simmons will be higher up on the roster than KA. Simmons is better at threes and more athletic so he can do quick straight line drives at the very least. Although in the first game he showed potential to be more than a straight line driver vs shifting defenses.

wildbill2u
07-12-2015, 03:33 PM
Simmons' biggest edge may turn out to be his defense and energy.

Darkwaters
07-12-2015, 04:02 PM
If you're referring to how some people are talking about them competing against each other, they're probably just referring to the backup SF spot. They'll most likely both be on the team this season, but who gets those backup 3 minutes will depend on who proves to be the most capable.

The designation of "Backup 3" or "Backup 2" isn't really all that significant. The Spurs tend to just look at them all as "wings" that are largely interchangeable. Now obviously, if a player like Patty Mills is playing some on the wing they'll usually try to pair him with another larger wing. But for the most it more comes down to the questions or "which two are starting?" and then "who is first off the bench? Second? Third?"

The way the roster is structured right now the two starters are obviously Leonard and Green. The first wing off the bench is Ginobili. So what we're talking about is a competition for the 4th wing rotation spot, AKA the 2nd wing off the bench.

The Spurs rotation doesn't typically require a routine 3rd wing off the bench (ie, the 5th wing) to play. That player will more likely than not only get time during garbage minutes or major blowouts. So the difference between the 4th and 5th wing is really the difference between being in the regular rotation or outside of it completely. Thats what Simmons and Anderson are probably fighting over. A fringe spot in the rotation for anywhere between 5-15 minutes nightly or a dedicated spot on the bench (oh, and lots of practice in Patty Mills' diverse set of towel waves).

Vic Petro
07-12-2015, 04:31 PM
I think the confusion is stemming from the difference between roster and rotation. They'll both be on the roster but are probably battling for one spot in the full-strength rotation.

I'm about 5 minutes behind the main broadcast (paused for dinner) but I'm trying to catch up.

It's good to see Kyle Anderson make some shots early (including a 3 that was probably some BS...but I won't argue with the points!). Hes definitely got that lean-in working that lets him draw a lot of fouls. Very nice to see some positives from last game carried over.

That being said, his handle is not nearly as good as he thinks it is. His second turnover was totally unforced. Hes just a weak ball handler and he lost it.

I definitely see what you've been saying. I definitely think thats his strength and what he needs to build up. He'll never be confused with a slasher or a post-up threat. But if he can get a 3 and some solid mid-range stuff going (along with a continued strong effort at the FT line) then he'll be relevant.

That being said, he really needs to dial in his handle. He breaks a lot of plays or gives up sloppy TO's because of it. Every game.
