When someone has worked hard that means they have put in hard work


How do you measure what work is harder than other work? Hours? Sweat? Intellect? Or is it just defined by what brings in more money?

Why would I want to compare different kinds of work? That seems silly to me.

But let me give a simple analogy.

Let's say I'm sitting on my couch eating Cheetos. My grandpa walks in, gives me a million dollars, and then dies on the spot. A few years ago my grandpa said I had to get a degree and then he would give me a million dollars. So this was his way of holding up his bargain. While in college, I mostly played vidya and masturbated to hentai porn. Occasionally about one night out of three weeks I studied pretty hard for a few hours in order to pass my test. Later I graduated with a general studies degree with a 2.05 GPA.

Now let's meet Jim. Jim has worked 90 hours a week at a construction job making $50k a year in the same time frame that I spent masturbating and playing video games. While doing so, he uses that money to get a PhD in biomolecular physics. While getting his PhD, he is putting his kids through school and learning Russian, Latin, Greek, and French all at the same time. Unfortunately for Jim, there was no market for his PhD in physics so he works as a janitor at McDonalds after he graduates.

By our understanding, it seems that Jim has worked harder than I. But I still put in hard work (to me it was hard) in order to pass a couple of tests each semester. Does it matter who worked harder? Do I owe Jim 50% of that million dollars?

Not sure where you got the arbitrary 50% number or why you'd think anyone would suggest the entire amount would go to one other person.

If you invest that million dollars in a hedge fund and live off the earnings while sitting around masturbating and playing video games, I believe you should pay the same (or preferably a higher) % of your earnings in tax as Jim, who is actually doing something. It has gotten too easy to hoard wealth in this country without actually contributing to anything or creating jobs, and it's become too easy an argument to suggest that poverty is the result of "not working hard."

It's not punishment. It's not meant to be. It's a more balanced approach to taxation. You will still have, and continue to make, more money than Jim.

You've allowed yourself to buy the idea that taxation is punishment. I admit liberals have done just as much to perpetuate this idea, but progressive taxation is not about punishing the wealthy.

I think everybody should play by the same rules.

I mean, would you be ok with me coming into your house and taking some of some of your furniture because you have too much and "redistributing" it? Of course not. But I'm a plain thief who is the obvious culprit. With government, there is nobody physically taking anything from you so there's some sort of notion that it's ok because you know the government has been proven to be oh so honest, virtuous, and has our best interest at heart!

I always have more respect for the car jacker who comes up to me at gunpoint than the insecure schmuck who sees the guy with the nice ferrari, goes behind the voting booth and votes to raise taxes because "It's not fair maaaaaannnnnnn!"

Ok then, what would your tax proposal be then? If you cant stomach taxing big corporations and wealthy individuals, how else are you going to raise sufficient funds for government programs and whatever else?

Top rate of income tax on the highest earners should be 50%, but I have no white or black racial leaning, unlike certain conservatives..

the tax rate on top earners used to be 90% but that was usually offset through charity, job creation and voluntary contribution to building a better America.
