View Full Version : Ultimate Spurs Roster Versatility

The NBA is all about versatility, now right? Almost all of the GSW players (save for Bogut and Ezeli perhaps) were able to play multiple positions (and comfortably switch on P&R's) and do multiple things that would contribute on both ends of the floor. Much like Pop's Spurs, Kerr orchestrated five active bodies on the defensive side with rotations and five legitimate threats on the offensive side with ball movement and attacking mismatches.
Well with the Spurs' unfinalized roster, the five positions can each be played by at least five Spurs players (both Patty and Jimmer don't exactly fit perfectly into either guard position, but it probably matters less in the Spurs motion system):
PG - Tony, Patty, Raymac, Jimmer, Manu
SG - Danny, Manu, Patty, J. Simms, Jimmer
SF - Kawhi, Kyle, Manu, Danny, J. Simms
PF - Lamarcus, Diaw, West, Timmy, Bonner, Kawhi, Kyle
C - Timmy, Lamarcus, West, Boban, Bonner, Diaw
So I guess now the question is... which lineups work best against which teams' rosters as they change during games. Thoughts vs toughest competition - HOU, GSW, OKC, LAC, NOLA, MEM, CLE, Utah, MIA, CHI, ATL? Predictions?

The Spurs don't adjust to the NBA.... The NBA adjust to the Spurs. CIA POP

Most versatile unit would be:
Parker/Manu
Green
Leonard
Diaw
Aldridge

Kawhi can play SG. He played it the first 3 months of his career.

He can play it but 2's give him the most trouble on the defensive end. The team is much better off when kawhi is at 3.

I wonder if the front office purposely built the team this way. While everybody is getting smaller, it almost seems like the Spurs are trying to go big. Hard to figure out what they are doing.

I think, as above, Pop will definitely try going very big, Diaw or Aldridge at the SF. It may not work but some teams could have major problems with it, like GSW.

oh my question was not just amusing lineups but ones specifically designed for GSW's entire roster. HOU's entire roster. how do our backups match up with their likely backups. because i think the default starting lineup will not change (TP=DG=KL=LMA=TD), but the minutes will. When iguodala comes off the bench at the end of the 2nd qtr, who do we play? Manu?? That seems destined for disaster. Kyle would be awful probably... Overlap with DG or KL I guess?
Also I wouldn't get my hopes up for Boban doing very much. Pop will likely not trust him with much even in the first year, much like Splitter n Baynesie. He will eat rest min for TD. He seems almost tooooo sloooowwww... Granted the game I watched of Boban, he was probably playing on a broken foot, but he's simply a complete unknown at this point and that doesn't favor well with Pop.
How does Tymac matchup with Ty Lush? Or does Ty start? lol that team will be hilarious. i'm gonna hafta get the full league pass to watch the HOU, OKC, and LAC drama unfold

That lineup will absolutely get torched by quick guards. Would have to swap out Kyle or Diaw for Danny.

That was probably before he developed his post game. KL would eat 2's alive on the post and in the pivot now.

Well, Pop really seems to dislike going all-out small (Kawhi at the 4).
I think the only time he did it last year was at the end of the Playoffs (at it seemed to work). Otherwise it's always two bigs in the lineup.
