I don't know the degree of institutional league control...I'm guessing the CBA puts min / max on the number of games. But it otherwise appears that the teams have at least a significant degree of say in their scheduling. I don't know how long Miami-SA has been going; but a match-up like that is definitely more conducive to ticket sales and ratings than other match-ups.

Also, the fact that teams individually release their schedules at separate times alludes to their relative amount of autonomy on the matter.

Hakeem's peak height was 6'10. He was always an undersized Center. That's partially what made him so quick, along w/his great athleticism. He made up for it with his massive wingspan and incredible timing. He's prob lost an inch or so too with age.

I used to wait tables in the Quarry (1998-2000) and the Spurs used to come in all the time. I waited on a table of Perdue, Malik Rose, Kerr and Antonio Daniels and Perdue paid but I forgot to give him his credit card back.

A few hours later, the manager yells across the kitchen to me "Will Perdue is on the phone for you and he's pissed!"

Kind of a surreal moment though he was very gracious about it.

Let's relive all the times we took a dump on Phoenix in the playoffs, or speculate on the coming season? Spurs fans are supposed to support the players. That's generally how it works. I'm just happy we have Duncan, Ginobili, Parker, Leonard, Aldridge, West, Green, Diaw, Patty and I think that team will be good. I plan to see at least 3-4 games in person in New Orleans, Houston and hopefully getting to S.A. once to seem them there.

I think he positions himself as the leader of the next generation Spurs. He was the only regular Spurs player who went out to Summer League to support the team.

He's also one of the older players of the younger group.

This was a very very good article actually can't believe just read it now.


“We have a lot of questions,” he said, “and what people won’t think about is personality and fiber and what we had camaraderie-wise. We lost some of that.”

The Spurs coaches talked about what they gained, too. And after breaking down what they think they will do — such as run more post-ups than they have in recent years — they were still as uncertain as ever at the outcome.

“In the beginning,” Popovich said, “we’re just going to be teachers. We’re going to tell everyone how we usually like to do things. And then we’re going to watch them play.”

At some point in the season the rotation will change, as will minutes. At some point Popovich will rethink how certain lineups fit together, and he will rethink strategy, and he might even come up with more pretty plays.

If that’s the nature of the game, it’s also that of the coach. Popovich has evolved as his teams have, and now he is starting over, yet again, with the same franchise.


Kind of confirms some of my suspicion, that Pop specially in this late stage of the team, likes to watch what players naturally do well and then try to place them in positions to replicate that success, instead of the other way around, which is why other teams fail sometimes trying to fit a square peg in a round hole. Pop obviously wants shooters to space the floor, but what do you do with valuable guys that have unorthodox roles? Pop kind of has given the ball to Diaw at times and let him come up with stuff. Diaw is as unorthodox as it comes but Pop has evolved to be more flexible with players specially on offense, if what they do gets results. He is very, very strict on what he wants defensively. But for example, what he will get angry at offensively, is guys who make bad decisions with the ball, forcing up a shot is just as bad as passing up a shot you should have taken.

The focus is on Lamarcus, but as a whole the team has changed a lot because you also want to phase out Tony and Manu a little bit and increase the scoring or creating burden for other guys. Its exciting to watch and may take even another season to take on a "beautiful appearance of its own." I say this because even the same system looks different depending on the players who are executing it. Certainly the offense looked different when Tony vs. Cojo were at the point. The team looked very different before Diaw rolled into town as well. It also looks very different in Austin, where the Austin spurs run the same sets. If you know some basketball you will recognize the sets, but the execution, the reads player makes and what they do with those reads varies.

Popovich added the Spurs won’t carry their entire preseason roster to Sacramento, citing the logistics of playing 20 players. In general, however, Popovich indicated this could be a busier preseason than usual for veteran holdovers like Tim Duncan and Tony Parker.

“Usually we don’t give many minutes to Timmy or Tony or whoever,” Popovich said. “But this preseason, they probably need to play a little bit with David West and LaMarcus Aldridge so they know each other a little bit better than they do right now. So they might be in games a bit more than they have been in the past.”
