One of the most charismatic performers the business has seen. I'd go with one of the top 20 All Time.

Hate to see this and he was so young, bummer.

Just when I thought I had all the answers...

Never celebrated as a great technical wrestler but there's a reason he was put in the ring with Mr T on more than a few occasions. Just like Bam Bam Bigelow walking LT through their 'mania match, it takes special talent to take a largely untrained celeb and have a match that isn't the drizzling shits. And his IC match with Bret Hart was one I watched again and again over years.

Truth is he was lucky to make it to 61 with the way he lived. Not shocked to hear he is gone. The wrasslin fan in me is just thankful that he was around long enough to tell his stories and get them out to the net to live on.

He lived in Portland. And when he first broke into the business it was in the Pacific Northwest.

Winnepeg is not the Pacific NW. You can listen to him talk about how he broke into pro wrestling in Winnepeg here:

You're right. I was thinking more of where he first started becoming somebody...

By late 1978-early 1979, Buddy Rose talked Piper into leaving the California promotions for even more fame in Don Owen (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Don_Owen_(wrestling_promoter))’s Pacific Northwest Territory (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Pacific_Northwest_Wrestling) where he teamed with Killer Tim Brooks (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Killer_Tim_Brooks), Rick Martel (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Rick_Martel), and Mike Popovich to win the NWA Pacific Northwest Tag Team Championship (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/NWA_Pacific_Northwest_Tag_Team_Championship). Piper also won the NWA Pacific Northwest Heavyweight Championship (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/NWA_Pacific_Northwest_Heavyweight_Championship) with victories over both Lord Jonathan Boyd (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Jonathan_Boyd) and "Playboy" Buddy Rose (http://www.spurstalk.com/wiki/Buddy_Rose).

But being this is a sad time for us fans, not going to do the usual debate thing.

I hope someone does a documentary on Hot Rod…Greatest skit ever was Pipers Pit….At some point he got involved in the movie business, missed scheduled matches & fell out of favor with Vince McMahon…I am thinking that it had to do with Harley Davidson & the Marlboro Man back in 1991…Hot-Rod & Big John Studd lost their WWF endorsements along with action figure revenue…It was a huge financial hit…

The accent would always make one pause no matter what they were doing as they passed the television set, though The Pit was his highest calling. When he'd invite a relative newcomer in would be the best. He'd make promises that there would be no physical attack, no beat down, no slappin' the livin' shit out of the fellow. The poor thing would go on in, set down and for the first minute the promises would be kept. Then Piper would slap the livin' shit out of him. If I saw it a 100 times it never grows old....

We look not
at what can be seen,
but we look at what
cannot be seen
For what can be seen
is temporary,
but what cannot
be seen is eternal
For we know that
if the earthly tent
we live in is destroyed,
we have a building
from God,
A house not made
from hands,
Eternal in the heavens,
In the heavens

I like talking rasslin'.

Hearing these guys talk about the real world behind the scenes is fascinating. Very interesting world full of unique characters.

Piper's character was unique which really is a big deal in the biz, it's not that easy to do.

I always go with BHH and AHH, or before Hulk Hogan and after with the rasslin'. He really did bring the sport to the forefront. While Ric Flair was better he was pretty much a southern thing. While Hogan had no boundaries,

Piper and his wife Kitty, who he had been married to since 1979, lived on a mountain in Portland, Oregon.[104] They had four children: daughters Anastacia Shea, Ariel Teal, and Falon Danika, and son Colton Baird. Anastacia has a child, making Piper a grandfather. Colton is an aspiring mixed martial artist and also wrestles for Portland Wrestling Uncut. Ariel is following her father's lead in Hollywood as an actress. Piper and Ariel acted together in the film Legion: The Final Exorcism. Falon is a college student.[105]

Thats true, Big Trouble in Little China, Escape from NY, The Thing, and They Live are classics, I really enjoyed Memoirs of an Invisible Man and In the Mouth of Madness could have been a better movie.
Cristine and Starman are meh and I dont really enjoyed The Fog.
But when the decline started in the 90s the lowest point ever was that Ghosts from Mars movie it was cheap stupid cliche and some of the worst crap ever, he did all those great movies so how the hell he fell into that hole?

His "Assault on Precinct 13" is the masterpiece. The [ice cream truck sequence] with the Richards girl is one of the noted scenes in film history. The movie is more than fit for repeated viewings.

"Escape" has not aged well as one would've expect. It's more a curiosity than a study.

I bet its an awesome movie, I´ve only seen the remake with Ethan Hawke and Brian Dennehy and it was an interesting movie.
Agreed with ¨Escape from NY¨ but still is a classic, on the other hand ¨Escape from LA¨ was a totally unnecesary movie, almost a remake of NY and it looked very class B Movie, it was like Airplane 2 where you get almost the same but this time you had to wait 15 years.
Amy has caught Carpenter.

While the movies aren't much in toto, Carpenter always could capture a great scene or two. The dream sequences in Prince of Darkness were damn spooky and made the movie memorable.

Yeah, "Escape/LA" was an abomination. And I was there with the children opening day. We couldn't wait,,,like "An American Werewolf in Paris." Good Lord. They got me both times. At least with "Paris" I had a feeling I was in trouble.

Napoleon Wilson is one of the all-time great characters, imo. I agree with you that Escape from New York hasn't aged all that well (no futuristic movie really does) but it's still fun to see that cast in action- Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Harry Dean Stanton, Adrienne Barbeau, Isaac Hayes and Kurt Russell in his first post-Disney badass role.

I remember Piper was on the Super Mario Bros show, the one with live actors before the cartoon started. He went ti the bros to get his bagpipes fixed and they thought it was a vacuum cleaner LOL

Yep, "Brain" (Dean) & "Maggie" (Barbeau) steal the film & light the screen. A hushed, simple cadence to "Brain's" admonishment of Barbeau "Maggie..." gets your attention and assures the viewer their humanity is fully intact. One only needs to imagine what they've gone thru since arriving there on the island, yet their love endures. His death is just incomprehensible to her, then upon comprehension she has absolutely no intention of going on without him. Her only salvation rests in her (((opportunity))) to exact vengeance within minutes.

Carpenter, in association with Dick Clark, Russell, his wife (Season Hubley who would appear in "Escape" in the Coffee House scene) and Russell's father had struck "Elvis" 2 years prior to "Escape."---& there is an early part in "Escape" where Russell is in Van Cleef's office and he strikes an Elvis pose. I'm sure that wasn't done on accident.
