It is actually a very big thing in Europe and hardwired into every European player growing up. Not just basketball, either.

Many Europeans have their first taste of high stakes competition playing for the junior National teams (U17s, U19s etc), and grow up together like brothers in arms , no matter their club affiliation. Team USA is more of an elite mercenary group compared to , say, Team Spain's standard conscripted army. I guess for Americans getting selected is more about status than National pride, with the possible exception of hunting for an Olympic Gold.

Patty wasn't available for the European tour because of his shoulder injury. Is there some type of exception because of Exum's injury?
