Actually he's known more for his NFL exploits. He is a Hall of Famer.

He grew up in Bakersfield and was one of the first great multi purpose running backs.

He scored...

Rushing
Receiving
Passing
INT
PAT
FG

And returned punts and kickoffs. The guy could do it all. Scored 484 points!

Funny thing is just a week ago I was in a restaurant in Oildale (across a bridge from Bakersfield) and there was a picture of Gifford (USC) and the old guy who owned the restaurant.

Not to mention he scored with Kathy Lee. RIP

If ya can't figure that out people why am I not surprised?Oh look, wikipedia.

Gifford played for 13 years.

Gifford was a broadcaster for over twice that long.

More people watched him and knew him as a sportscaster than ever saw him play. This takes nothing away from his achievements as a player.

If ya can't figure that out Tubby why am I not surprised?

Kathie Lee Gifford
Dabney Coleman
Lauren Hutton
Kris Jennery
Dolly Parton

I don't get the connections to most of those.

"Wow, the Monday Night Football guy died."

"Kathie Lee Gifford's husband died."

Such was the reaction by many on Sunday when news started spreading about the death of Frank Gifford. The response is understandable. An entire generation grew up with Frank Gifford's voice coming out of their television sets and his wife doing a talk show with Regis Philbin. Frank Gifford, at least to most of the world not yet 50 years old, was a broadcaster with a famous wife. Period.http://www.si.com/nfl/2015/08/09/frank-gifford-death-hall-fame-player-giants

Gifford retired from football 5 years before I was born, and I'm turning 46 with grown ass kids. You've got to be at least 60 to have any personal recollection of watching him play. The vast majority of people with any personal remembrance of Frank Gifford will be as a broadcaster.

This is like Lenny Wilkins, the Hall of Fame basketball coach. He had players on his own team that didn't know he was also inducted into the HoF as a player.
