I encounter the "Middle East has historically been backwards/mess" argument by Americans frequently. Isn't the truth that ME was even with Europe up until the New World [Gold] was discovered? Isn't the Middle East more historically influential than Asia?
Are we to believe that if Russia invaded and dissolved the American government, things would be any different here? Inner cities would turn into war zones within 24 hours. There's a strong case to be made that the current shitstorm in the Middle East dates all the way back to when Britain got pissed off at Mosaddegh in the '50s, levied sanctions, sent in a blockade, and talked Eisenhower into helping them overthrow him in favor of the Shah. More recently, the British parliament basically lied both countries' way into Iraq with the September Dossier in 2002. I'd say both countries have plenty of blame to shoulder for the fucked-up situation over there.
Even then, it's not all because of other countries' foreign policies - as long as oppressive dictators, religious radicals and terrorists are in charge, the Middle East will never be stable regardless.
