WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama secured a landmark foreign policy victory Wednesday as Senate Democrats amassed enough votes to ensure the Iran nuclear deal survives in Congress despite ferocious opposition from Republicans and the government of Israel.

Democratic Sen. Barbara Mikulski of Maryland became the crucial 34th vote in favor of the agreement.

"No deal is perfect, especially one negotiated with the Iranian regime," Mikulski said in a statement. She called the accord "the best option available to block Iran from having a nuclear bomb. For these reasons, I will vote in favor of this deal."

The backing from Mikulski, who is retiring next year, gives supporters the margin they need to uphold an Obama veto of a congressional resolution of disapproval if Republicans pass such a measure later this month.

Obama’s Labor Day Executive Order: More Paid Sick LeaveFor Government Contractors

President Barack Obama signed his latest executive order on Labor Day, which extends the number of paid sick leave days mandated for federal contractors.

“Right now you have parents who have to choose between losing income or staying home with a sick child,” Obama said Monday in a speech at the annual Greater Boston Labor Council breakfast, an event sponsored by the AFL-CIO.

The executive order means that federal contractors will now earn one hour of leave for every 30 hours worked, with a cap at seven days of paid time off per year, the administration said. In total, the new regulations will extend paid sick leave to 300,000 federal contractors who currently do not have such benefits.

Obama also called on Congress to pass the Healthy Families Act, which would require private-sector employers with more than 15 employees to extend paid sick leave benefits.

“It builds on the growing momentum of people who are answering the call,” Obama said during his speech.

From a foreign policy perspective, the Iran deal will prove to be historic (positively). The Israeli lobby is split and beyond repair. Those two things alone are worth a lot.

Other than that, there's a lot of "meh". Libya bombing was a disaster. We should have never taken sides in the Ukrainian coup. The Egyptian coup and acknowledgement of the military dictatorship as legitimate will eventually bite us in the ass. We're currently bombing 7 different muslim-majority countries, which will have obvious predictive blowback. We should have never taken sides in Yemen, especially the wrong side. And the elephant in the room that nobody talks about is the "look forward not backward" policy of not prosecuting the torture regime architects from the previous administration. By not prosecuting, they are in violation of the Geneva conventions and the current admin should also be charged in international court.
