View Full Version : Late 90s-Early 2000s Hip-Hop and R&B was the GOAT

Man, that late 90s-Early 2000s era of HipHop and R&B was amazing. I remember being in the 4th grade and hoping to finish my homework asap so I could play basketball and listen to some Jay-Z or DMX or Ja. Those cats were running the rap game but there were so many artists making great songs in that time period too. The R&B scene was fire as well with artists like Sisqo, Case, Usher, Aaliyah, Craig David over in the UK and a bunch of others making hits. So many classics from that time period. It's crazy looking back that most of those artists dropping those gems were essentially kids in their early 20s.

It really hurts my soul knowing what DMX is going through these days. Just from listening to his music I know Earl Simmons has so much pain, sadness, and rage within. That man is a tortured soul. Things like Aaliyah's death and Kato's death only increased the pain in his heart. However, Crack cocaine is not the answer. I can't believe dude refuses to leave the drugs alone. X had it all - Multi-Platinum albums, money, fame, he even was an actor. Bro is throwing everything away because he won't let go of the drugs. It's sad seeing his situation. I hope he gets better someday, but I also know he may be too far gone at this point. Maybe he's determined to go reunite with Aaliyah. I hope you make it through the darkness, X.

Cant agree with your whole post, Ja was pretty shit and I don't really care for R&B. DMX was my shit though as a kid, thats one scary nigga. Rap was pretty decent at that time though, mainstream rap was at least at a higher level than it is now. There is honestly alot of really good rappers out there now, most of them just don't get much radio play.

Not to shit on your thread, but those are terrible choices for the GOAT. Where's KRS-1, Gangstarr, Mos Def, Wu-Tang, Nas, Big Pun, 2Pac, Notorious BIG ..? DMX refused to sell out so he dropped out of the game btw. That crack cocaine bs was a spin job. Jay Z, Ja Rule and Sisqo? Maaaaan...

:wow Can some of you motherfuckers read?! I'm talking about the late 90s to Early 2000s. If you want to make the argument that an earlier time period was the GOAT then you can list those names (Wu Tang, Big Pun, Notorious Big, Pac). Why would I be naming Pac and Big in this time period when they were already dead?! Jesus Christ some of you motherfuckers are illiterates. Read the fucking thread title and come with a better argument.

PS - Ja Rule sold 30 million fucking records. Sisqo's Unleash the Dragon went 5x Platinum. DMX was able to drop two Number one albums in 98 (It's Dark and Hell is Hot. Flesh of my Flesh, Blood of my Blood). So yes for the time period I'm speaking of those cats were running the game. How stupid for you to bring up 50 cent in this time period when dude was fairly unknown at that point :lol. Curtis Jackson was probably watching Ja Rule on TV and feeling extremely jealous and hateful. And besides that in early 2000 50 was shot 9 times, which means he was probably in a hospital bed somewhere recovering from the gunshots while Ja and Murder Inc began to strengthen their brand. But yeah get upset that I didn't bring him up in a convo about the late 90s to Early 2000s. Stupid illiterate motherfuckers :rollin

The Omen (Damien II) was my fav with Marilyn Manson...

I loved all three but I think I love Part 1 the most. "The snake, the rat, the cat, the dog. How you gon see em if you living in the fog?"

X - "Now I'm ready to chill but you still wan't me to kill."
Damien - "Look at what I did for you dog, come on keep it real."
X - "Aight, fuck it Ima do it, who is it this time?"
Damien - "Ayo remember that kid Shawn you used to be with in 89?"
X - "Nah, that's my man!"
Damien - "I thought I was your man?!"
X- "But yo that's my nigga!"
Damien - "Hey, who's your biggest fan? Either do it or give me your right hand that's what you said."
X - "I see now ain't nothing but trouble ahead..."

Not really my cup of tea though. Don't even bring up his commercial success as "proof" either. If were gonna play that game Will Smith has one of the best selling rap albums of all time.

Didn't I tell you not to use the records sold arguement? By that standard Will Smith is one of the best rappers of all time since Big Willy Style was one of the best selling albums of all time, that shit went 9x platnium. Your 30 million is way off base btw, should probably do some research before pulling randoms numbers out of your ass. Ja has sold roughly around 14 million albums world wide.

It's fine if you don't like Ja, but it's straight up dishonest to say that man and Murder Inc didn't make classics for quite some time. And I got my info from Def Jam's official website. That shift from 96-97...damn.:lol It really is crazy how it fell off. Those couple of early Eminem albums were really the only thing out that was original heading into the late 90's.

We were listening to some old rap on the ride to Austin and I was telling my buddies how fortunate we were to get to go to high school in the early/mid nineties. There were a few solid one hit/album wonder rappers like Luniz and The Twinz too.

Damn.. tough one. '97 had a ton of classics I still enjoy today..

Here's a few of mine, can't really pick just one.

P's most complete, well produced album IMO. Bourbons and Lacs screwed and chopped = one of the best songs in 3rd coast history. Still didn't stop him from saying bout it bout it rowdy rowdy several times on each song, but great nonetheless.

http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/d84c9f2d12b2db98457b681043b4dec1/1455562.jpg

Nearly every track on this album had a wicked ass beat, and was on that darker Three 6 style..

http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/da1e02395b302dadb7a1dae075d4777f/1680933.jpg

Mystikal's style didn't stand the test of time, but still spent many hours banging this shit:

http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/04093d70fd3a44f6f562f317235039f3/1277157.jpg

Best Twista album OOT - He kills every verse on the CD. The Legendary Traxster killed pretty much every beat as well.

"Im hazardous / Makin' musical miracles like I'm Jesus of Nazareth / Yet disastrous.."

http://rymimg.com/lk/s/l/e14d9c666d7961ef13457098c1e8d5ca/1456026.jpg

Notorious Thugs is still one of my favorite tracks today.

I hated that album. I can't believe he wrote such a shit song Ghetto D over a hiphop classic like Eric B is President. And the singing on I Miss My Homies was cringeworthy. I gotta admit Burbans and Lacs was the shit though, much better without the screw imo. Speaking of screwing, I wasn't usually a fan of it, but these three songs were awesome slowed down:

Smoking that weed, feeling fine, got me a forty and a fatass dime.
One of the best collab tracks ever. The voices, the verses, the beat...."sittin' in church drinkin' a 40 of holy water..."

Three 6 is STILL my shit. Got Project Pat in my truck's cd player at this very moment. I normally listen to music through my phone when I drive...but the Project Pat CD still gets play time. Mista don't play...

Y'all didn't listen to much east coast? The Infamous was the East Coast version of Riding Dirty; e.g., a completely flawless album.
