A high school student in Texas whose hobby was inventing thought he had a unique idea for a project: to build his own clock.

But the effort landed him in handcuffs and juvenile detention, accused of making a hoax bomb.

When Ahmed Mohamed, 14, brought the clock to MacArthur High School in Irving, Tex., on Monday, an engineering teacher suggested that he not show the invention to other teachers. But it beeped during an English class, prompting Ahmed to show his English teacher what it was, according to an account in The Dallas Morning News.

Mayor Of City Where Muslim Teen Was Wrongly Arrested Is Anti-Sharia Crusader

To her supporters, Irving, Texas Mayor Beth Van Duyne is a tough-as-nails politician who's not afraid to take on Islam.

To her critics, Van Duyne is a fear-monger who stokes the flames of Islamophobia.

So both Van Duyne's fans and foes can surely find a talking point in the Monday incident where Irving police arrested 14-year-old Ahmed Mohamed (http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/ahmed-mohamed-irving-texas-clock) for bringing a homemade clock to school that they thought looked like a "movie bomb."

Van Duyne first made headlines for challenging Islam in February, when she wrote a Facebook post (http://cdn5.freedomoutpost.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/03/facebook.png) vowing to look into a "Shariah law court" that was said to have been set up by an Irving mosque.

"While I am working to better understand how this 'court' will function and whom will be subject to its decisions, please know that if it is determined that there are violations of basic rights occurring, I will not stand idle and will fight with every fiber of my being against this action," she wrote.

But the "Shariah law court" wasn't actually headquartered in Irving, which abuts Dallas, nor did it have anything to do with the Islamic Center of Irving. A note on the homepage (http://www.islamictribunal.org/) of Dallas' Islamic Tribunal, which settle civil disputes between Muslims for a fee, aimed to disambiguate the two.

"Media speculation has led members of the local community to wonder if the Islamic Center of Irving is facilitating 'Shariah Courts' at the Mosque," the Islamic Tribunal's website read.

"The management of the Islamic Center of Irving categorically declares that no such court operates on the center’s premises. No other mosque in the area operates such courts.

However, the Islamic Tribunal that operates in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, independent of the mosques, to address a genuine need within our faith community for intra-community arbitration."

Then in March, Van Duyne threw her support behind a bill (http://www.dallasnews.com/news/metro/20150319-dispute-on-islam-roils-irving.ece) that would forbid Texas judges from using foreign law in their rulings. The bill's author, state Rep. Jeff Leach (R), had said the bill would solve the "problem" of the Islamic Tribunal in Dallas, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The schools were wrong in those instances too and I hope the parents sued them. However, this case is not just about a school administrator on a power trip suspending a student - it also involves racial profiling, unlawful arrest by the police and unlawful interrogation without the knowledge of the guardian.

Thanks for the link - another shocking case no doubt. I believe the reason this case is getting so much attention is that the kid exhibited all the qualities that are valued in children - intelligence, initiative, energy. He wasn't making mischief or being remotely annoying which is what normally triggers an unwarranted action from people in authority. Instead of recognizing and encouraging him, the authority figures went out of their way to treat him unfairly because he was different from the other kids.

The rules underwent a huge change after Columbine in Texas. Texas schools dance to what a stupid ass Texas Legislature puts out. That's the bottom line. This is why teachers don't know what the hell to enforce at any particular moment. Read the Bullying rules... Started by suicides because of kids teasing online. Schools dance to the moment because the Texas Legislature overreacts to current events.

Hoping to impress the teachers at his new school, an Irving, Texas, high school freshman named Ahmed Mohamed brought a homemade clock with him to MacArthur High Monday morning, which he’d assembled before bed the night before. When he showed it to those teachers, though, they were something other than impressed, and by Monday afternoon, Mohamed was being led out of school in handcuffs. Ahmed’s English teacher believed the

During the Holloway Elementary School science fair last week, kids crowded around Logan’s exhibit as he explained how he used veggie power to keep track of time.
“I tried to get an alarm clock to come on with no batteries,” Logan explained, pointing to copper wires and chunks of potato and lemons. Citric acid in the lemon kept the clock working for hours, but the potato “spuddered” out rather quickly.
However, he said he was really happy with his experiment because “if the power goes out, I will get to school on time.”

Plus, here’s an anonymous kid in Kiowa, Colorado who brought an actual inert bomb and wasn’t suspended (his teacher was)

A high school student’s science project was meant to demonstrate how heat is involved in transferring energy. But because the project was an inert bomb, the student and his teacher are taking some heat of their own.
The bomb, made with fertilizer and diesel in a test tube, was displayed last week at a science fair with traditional experiments when an anonymous caller alerted the authorities. The bomb was made with the approval of the 17-year-old student’s teacher.
...
The student, whose name officials refused to release, remains in school and will not be disciplined by the school, because he had his teacher’s approval for the project.

The timing part is totally stupid.

Its the very rapid expansion of some fluid or solid with surrounding metal (shrapnel) that's scary. You know, the actual bomb part of the bomb. Apparently no one looked for the real part of a bomb. Hell, he could have brought a mousetrap with a candle and some wax and had a crude timer.

This really puts things in context:

He said he took it to school on Monday to show an engineering teacher, who said it was nice but then told him he should not show the invention to other teachers. Later, Ahmed’s clock beeped during an English class, and after he revealed the device to the teacher, school officials notified the police, and Ahmed was interrogated by officers.

His engineering teacher understood what it was and also that it might alarm (no pun) someone who didn't know... which it did.

If public schools were allowed to get rid of the 1% repeat offenders the schools would change dramatically. So much effort goes into trying to contain out of control hormonal boys.

And the general recipe :

#Halfabomb Explodes on Twitter After Think Tank Calls Boy’s Clock a Threat (https://theintercept.com/2015/09/18/halfabomb-explodes-twitter-think-tank-calls-boys-clock-threat/)

After an outpouring of sympathy for Ahmed Mohamed, the 14-year-old Muslim high school student arrested on Monday (https://theintercept.com/2015/09/16/arrest-14-year-old-student-making-clock-fruits-15-years-fear-mongering-anti-muslim-animus/) for bringing his homemade clock to school, a neoconservative think tank funded by major defense contractors tried to justify the actions of local police and school officials, calling what the boy built “half a bomb.”

Following our story (https://theintercept.com/2015/09/18/prominent-anti-muslim-group-says-ahmed-mohameds-clock-resembles-ied-trigger-produced-iranians/?comments=1#comments) about the Center for Security Policy’s comments, social media users responded with mockery — some providing their own examples of what else could be construed as #halfabomb (https://twitter.com/search?q=%23halfabomb&src=typd).

Red states especially are gerrymandered, voter suppressed, Christina Sharia, fucked and unfuckable.

You people still don't think this entire thing was planned? He put his "homemade" clock in a sketchy looking enclosure and the first teacher who saw it advised him not to show it to anyone else. So, naturally, the thing to do is show it to each and every teacher. It wasn't until the end of the day that an English teacher got spooked and that's when Ahmed clammed up. Why would you go into an English class and plug this thing into an outlet? The entire episode is extremely fishy, IMO.

If his motive was to impress a teacher (as he claims), then his decision to recycle an existing clock doesn't make much sense, imo. If his motive was to get attention for a sketchy-looking device, the recycled clock makes sense.

Why plug the clock into an outlet in English class (and other classes), particularly after the first teacher warned you not to show it to anyone else? THAT makes no sense to me.

Why plug the clock into an outlet in English class (and other classes), particularly after the first teacher warned you not to show it to anyone else? THAT makes no sense to me.

I thought it was in his back-pack when the alarm sounded in the English class.

go along with the rightwingnut bullies here:

Anti-Islam Activist: Ahmed Mohamed's Arrest Was A Plot To Create A 'Muslim-Privilege Exemption To Anti-Terrorism Efforts

Jim Hanson of the anti-Islam organization Center for Security Policy, was far less reserved in his comments, as he declared unequivocally that everything about the situation "was a P.R. stunt, it was a staged event" designed by Islamic radicals for the purpose of undermining anti-terrorism security protocols.

"They did that to create the exact scenario that played out," Hanson said (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8ml_OJZ6ss). "

They wanted people to react and they wanted to portray this kid as an innocent victim ... I don't think there is any question he was put up to it by someone else who wanted him to take that in to create this exact scenario.

As you mentioned, fear and panic, and then out of that to be able to say, 'Look at him, he's a nice, nerdy little kid,' and that the police overreacted and all these things ...

They want a Muslim-privilege exemption to 'see something, say something' and that's what this is about."

I know this is wrong because I am a liberal and I am supposed to defend Ahmed... but don't you find it suspicious that he was wearing a NASA t-shirt to school the day he got arrested? I could be totally off base here, but I suspect Ahmed's father may have instructed Ahmed to wear that t-shirt to school to deliberately make the kid appear geeky, inquisitive and ultimately innocuous. That way when they took the photo of him getting arrested it would create a certain "shock value" because how could they arrest this poor little kid who just likes science and wants to build stuff?

The liberals are "all in" when it comes to defending Ahmed. If we can expose Ahmed, then there is the very real possibility we can take them down and open up the pathway for Donald Trump to win the election.

What it obviously wasn't was a serious bomb threat, which is what zero tolerance policies are intended to prevent. I would understand this kind of reaction if they had found a pencil-case-sized digital clock left in a bathroom, or if it was done in any more anonymous way. Since he had already shown it to a teacher, there is no reason to believe he was planning on using it in a bomb threat. So this was any easy controversy to avoid.

Doesn't really qualify as a hoax if he's not trying to pass it off as a bomb. The hoax only becomes a hoax if the school and police overreact, which they were not required to do. Once they determined it was not a bomb, nor a device to be used in a bomb threat, the whole thing could have ended quietly.

I think the whole event – and our collective response, with everybody up to the President chiming in, says a whole lot about us. We don’t care that none of us were there and knows what happened, we jump to conclusions and assume we’re experts. We care about the story, but we don’t care about the actual facts. Headlines and click-bait are far more interesting than thinking for ourselves. We like to point out other any bit of perceived injustice or discrimination we can find – it’s practically a new national past-time. We like playing victim, and we like talking about victims – so much so we sometimes find victims where none really existed. We also like to find somebody to blame, even when there’s nobody at fault. We like to play social justice warrior on our Facebooks and Twitters, posting memes and headlines without digging in behind the sensationalism, winning bonus sensitivity points in the forms of likes and re-tweets. Once group-think kicks in, we rally around hash tags and start shouting moral outrage in a deafeningly loud national chorus. The media plays us like a fiddle, and we don’t even notice we’ve all been had.

Bottom line, TSA would confiscate sweet widdle Ahmed's device, even if it had Dora-the-fuckin-Explorer and Hello Kitty stickers all over it.

:cry It's a pencil case :cryBottom line: you don't know that at all, but you'll be goddammed if you can't say "bottom line" about it.

Anecdote!

"Pencil case clock" and "suspicious looking electronic device" are not listed on the list of forbidden items.

"Novelty watch with electrical fuses" is not on the list of forbidden items either.

The pencil case? I'm not sure. It resembles a clock in a pencil case more than anything.

I'm getting pretty tired of talking about it. This kid is a rock star now. All thanks to the clock that may have a hoax bomb.

was this the kid that literally told another student that he had a bomb?

:lol profiling!
:lol islamophobia!

though yes, from what i gathered, like with the ahmed clock case, the cops exceeded their authority with the kid's detainment, in that they never notified his parents
