View Full Version : Philip Rivers is an All-time Great

And the most accurate passer in NFL history. This isn't a bold statement and I've watched Rivers since his NCSU days. He's the best QB drafted in 04. One thing I've learned is that with Rivers it doesn't matter who you play, you ALWAYS have a chance to win, (evidenced by the 3OT game against Ohio State). It's a shame success is measured on rings because Rivers is far better than ELi and Big Ben.. But like Dan Marino, he will be forgotten in history. When Rivers was in his prime, they focused on LT too much. Now they have him throwing 65 times

The man is underrated as shit.

Great QB, tough as nails ... but let's not get crazy. Marino is far from forgotten but Rivers at least needs to make the Super Bowl ...to cement his legacy.

he's awesome, but he's not even top 5 since he was drafted and probably wont make the HOF unless he adds hardware, which is unlikely

brady/manning/rodgers/brees/ben are all squarely ahead of him

Objectively, I think Rivers will be remembered as a Rich Gannon, Steve McNair, Warren Moon type - really good quarterbacks without the resume to be an "all-time great." A lot of it isn't his fault: he's been saddled with terrible ownership, an inept front office and piss-poor coaching his whole career, and he hasn't had a real supporting cast since 2009. But he's also choked a lot in clutch moments, whether it's his brainfart against the Packers yesterday, his fumble against the Chiefs on Halloween, etc. He leads the league in interceptions on game-winning drive attempts since 2004. He also lobbied to save Norv's job a couple times, so he's partially to blame for the shit coaching.

Also, "Dan Marino has been forgotten in history" rivals "Cum Newton > Joe Montana" and "LeBron is the new T-Mac" as OP's shittiest take :lmao

unusually solid, non-trolling post :tu

but he did have one of the GOAT pass-catching TE's for his whole career, and sproles was basically a receiver for those teams. and vjax was a legit #1 for some years there

It's very accurate and both had some good talent and did not win with it. At one point rivers had LT, sproles, Gates in their primes but did not ring. along with a defense with Merrimam Weddle, Cromartie and Phillips ...

Romo had TO, Ware, Witten ...

Rivers has had a bit more playoff success though ...

So what he occasionally chokes in the odd regular season game, he's usually incredibly clutch throughout fourth quarters, or at least his stats say so. Has he ever choked in the playoffs? Ain't his fault Marlon McCree happened, and Nate Kaeding, and LT 'injury'.

Way over 1/2 is Rivers "portion" of the moronic decision to retain Norv.
While some teams and tv shows do not let their stars have say, many teams do.
Rivers i would venture had all kinds of pull as to whether Norv stayed or not.
Had Rivers told the Scamosses "I just can't play under Norv. He is a nice guy, but lets let him go where he is a fit like at a Texas Christian high school."

Wonder how much if any Rivers had a say so in obtaining Norv.
That was criminal.

LT was declining before sproles even sniffed his prime. At best, Weddle might have been a rookie and not good at the end of LT's prime and that was also the last year of merriman productivity(he only had 3 good years) because of the fucking Titans.

The Hall of Fame is full of QB;s who never won a championship, so forget that.

After this season Rivers will be among the top 10 All Time in TD passes. He's broke and breaking all of Hall of Famer Dan Fouts team records. After next season Rivers will be in with the extreme elite with TD passes.

As far as Big Ben vs Rivers goes, he is right there with Rivers stat wise and does have those SB exploits, so he would get the nod as the more accompolished. Nobody cares about supporting cast or lack of one, that's a total non factor.

The top 25 All Time QB's, taking into consideration everything.

No particular order.

Joe Montana...ND/Niners
Tom Brady...Mich/Pats
Peyton Manning...Tenn/Colts
Otto Graham...NW/Browns
Aaron Rodgers...Cal/Packers
Dan Marino...Pitt/Dolphins
John Elway..Stanford/Colts
Drew Brees...Purdue/Saints
Brett Favre..So. Miss/Packers
John Unitas...Louisville/Colts
Steve Young...BYU/Niners
Fran Tarkenton....Georgia/Vikes
Roger Staubach...Navy/Cowboys
Warren Moon...Washington/Oilers
Big Ben...Miami Ohio/Steelers
Philip Rivers....North Carolina/Chargers
Troy Aikman...UCLA/Cowboys
Eli Manning...Ole Miss/Giants
Tony Romo...Eastern Illinois/Cowboys
Kurt Warner.....Rams
Jim Kelly...Miami/Bills
Dan Fouts...Oregon/Chargers
Vinny Testerverde...Miami/Buc's
Y.A.Tittle...LSU/Giants
Sonny Jurgenson...Duke/Redskins
Kenny Stabler...Alabama/Raiders

Having seen all those play many times with the exception of Otto Graham, I put Rivers in the top 15, he's that good. Rivers with Duper/Clayton, Rice/Taylor, hell...Winslow/Jefferson/Joiner/Chandler like Fouts.

Deserve mention....

Terry Bradshaw
Len Dawson
Bob Griese
"Slingin' " Sammy Baugh

Stuff like just who was that QB that once traded became a stud receiver? What QB is still considered the greatest punter ever? What college QB was turned into an all pro defensive back in the NFL?

Wrong!

Baugh kicked in the elements, and on grass fields. He had more long kicks than Lechler and his career average of 45 yards actually superior to Lechlers 47 because of his era.

Baugh had more seasons where he averaged over 50 yards a kick than Lechler, his 85 longest kick superior to Lechlers 80.

Put Baugh in a dome, kicking without wind, wow~~~

Now think just a little bit ok stupid? How many domes has he kicked in? How many grass fields are left in the NFL?

None of the afc west plays in a dome, so the number of games he's kicked in a dome are pretty negligible. He could kick farther and higher than Baugh could.

While the game has evolved, punting is punting. Offenses have changed. Defensive rules have changed. But punting isn't really an aspect that changes with era. It's like talking about free throw shooting for basketball

Totally wrong, Baugh had an 85 yarder as his longest, Leachler an 80.

If you look at their seasonal break downs you'll see far more 75 or longer punts from Baugh, go ahead check it out. He averaged over 50 yards more seasons also.

Dude, you are totally/100%/completely wrong on this one, trust me! Do some research like I do, ok little man?

spurraider21
10-20-2015, 12:15 PM
Punts that exceed 65-70 yards are basically always results of long bounces. Lechlers 80 yard was a punt from his own 20 that became a touchback. It came against the Bears, and it's on YouTube. That punt with the bounce could have gone for 90+. Had he punted from the 10 instead of the 20, it would have been 90.

Why are you so damn lazy? All you have to is take ...5 minutes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....to Google these guys. You will find a site NFL STATS, that totally breaks down their careers. It's all right there staring at ya, Baugh had more long punts, he averaged over 50 yards in a season more times, ok?

Stupid, how many punts roll in a season? Now think, for Baugh to do what he did in that era, is totally amazing, far superior to what these guys do today. You really don't get that?

I'll go slow, you can do this shorty.

If you took the time to actually know the stats, you'd see that Sammy Baugh had more long kicks and seasons where he averaged over 50 yards a punt than Lechler, honest!

Now think, Baugh played all his games in the east, on grass in the elements, ok? He kicked in more bad weather games, never kicked in a dome or on fake grass, ok guy? If you think that doesn't make a big difference you're dumber thn I think, ok?

If you ...STILL...don't get it won't be surprised.

Little man, Jesse Owens won 4 Olympic gold medals at the 1936 games, he is still an all time great, a legend. There are high school kids today running faster and jumping further than he did. let me guess, you don't get it?

I don't ignore anything, and always give credit where it's due. You're simply one of those who are so wrapped up with a team/QB you ignore reality. The Niners are my team, we totally suck right now and I know it, ya see I deal with reality.

1) Since we're talking about the past, how about you add in the last three years? Those wins include the alpha-49ers, the Saints (when they were good), Patriots, etc.
2) "Yet to have beaten a team with a winning record" - So you're dismissing Seattle right off the bat in Seattle? A place where Wilson has gone 28-2 since 2012? You also dismiss that if Carolina had lost the games to those teams, 3 would have a winning record. The Packers (and Pats if I'm not mistaking) opponents both have similar or worse records than Carolina's opponents.
3) You like to bring up that the defense blew their coverage. A few problems with that. 1) Cam's pump fake drew Earl in who was guarding Olsen, the only legit weapons for Carolina got open, and 3) Cam led four 80 yard drives, NO team has done that in Seattle.

Go fuck yourself with your bullshit dude. Tired of arguing with a fucking wall.

Quit being a little bitch. Our best and only NFL-caliber receiver got injured before the year. In the four game win streak we didn't have Kuechly at all, lost Davis (captain), Stewart, Allen, Kalil (captain), Charles Johnson (captain) and our starting T rookie Daryl Williams.

Like I said I don't want to hear that shit. I can look at those injuries and be fucking estatic that our team is 5-0. If ANY team went 5-0 with pretty much back-ups, they'd have a right to say the same shit.

I thought you wanted to talk about how things really are instead of lists? Do you honestly believe you're winning that game without Kuechly? Yes he makes a HUGE difference, well so does Bobby Wagner. Don't be a little kid and,,,that's just an excuse...ok guy, that is..REALITY, ok? Hell yes any team playing without their defense leader will struggle, you don't know this? The Panthers lost all but the last couple minutes of that game, and that was WITHOUT Bobby Wagner, ok?

I know I know you need so badly for it to be...see see we good...but that's not what actually happened, ya got lucky they fucked up and they didn't have their D leader out there. Keep it real amigo.

Rivers playing down to his opponent per par. Still top QB of 04, wins rings with a competent team that doesn't have eternally shitty choking coaches and players all around him.

Rivers is one of those eternal chokers. Just like Choke Thornton and Gagtrick Marchoke.

How come nobody here EVER does any homework? Why not actually take a few minutes and educate yourselves? Why not look at Rivers numbers vs the greats, well?

Dan Fouts was a great QB, he is in the Hall of Fame, what did he ever win? Who is breaking all his Charger records? What did HOFer Sonny Jurgenson ever win, yep, a Hall of Famer.

Philip Rivers is a great QB only an idiot wouldn't get this.

Give Rivers, a HOF center, RB, two receivers, D lineman, two backers and a cornerback and let's see how he does. That 's what HOFer Terry Bradshaw had and Rivers is on a whole other level.
