I agree we need to get him more involved. We got him bc we need him to be beasting offensively and he's lost. I don't think posting up possession after possession is necessary but he needs to get into a different mindset. I think he's deferring too much, sometimes even hesitating to shoot. Popovich wants Spurs to improve transition defense
SAN ANTONIO -- Offensive chemistry generated headlines and conversations regarding the San Antonio Spurs over the summer, but coach Gregg Popovich admitted before Tuesday’s matchup against the Phoenix Suns that defense is the team’s emphasis in the preseason.
Namely, transition defense, which is an area of Spurs deficiency that doomed the team last season in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.
“Transition D has still been a problem,” Popovich said. “Our transition D still looks like it did in Game 6 and 7 against the Clippers last [season] in the first round. Worst transition defense in the history of basketball in those two games.”
How bad was it? Well, the Clippers outscored the Spurs 33-4 on the break in Game 6 and Game 7.
“So it’s been an emphasis to start this season,” Popovich said. “Because if we’re gonna be one of the worst offensive rebounding teams in the league, which we always are, we better be one of the best transition defense teams. Usually we are. But we weren’t last year in general, and it really showed in the last couple of games in the Clippers series.”
The Spurs outscored the Sacramento Kings 19-17 on the break in the exhibition opener, but have been bested in that category by the rest of their opponents throughout the preseason. Opponents have outscored San Antonio 82-65 through the first four games of the preseason.
“That’s the whole truth and nothing but the truth. ‘Can you handle the truth?’ I ask the players,” Popovich said. “So then, we do what we do and try to take care of it, right?”
Back to the drawing board, Pop.

I'm surprised that Fredette and Sykes aren't getting burn in a blow out. I guess Pop really wanted to see Manu and Parker play in a blow out.
More like they're getting cut. That Jimmer thread has lost fire since it became inevitable.

2/9 from Threes. This team is going to have some big shooting issues. Losing Beli is going to be painful. Obviously with Patty out, it hurts. But tonight, no real outside shooting.
Why do you think we're going to have "big shooting issues"? I miss Marco too, but he made 1.4 3s a game last year. We basically lost him and got Anderson, but also replaced a terrible shooting big in Tiago with a big who has range in Aldridge. We also didn't have Patty most of last year, and now he looks healthy. Cojo, Baynes... none of the other departures were good shooters. So where do the "big problems" come from? It looks like a pretty similar team shooting-wise to last year.
I think Williams and Simmons make the team and the rest get cut. I can't see Spurs taking a 36 year old Butler over one of these two young guys. Sure they will spend a lot of time in the D-league working on their games, but youth over age...I just see them going where the upside is.

Simmons with a -27. I have never disliked him, but I was more cautious than most with all the hype about him. I missed the first half of the game, and the second has had lag at moments for me, so some plays I have missed, but Reggie outplaying him is a wake up call. He's only looked good for a min or two here or there, and that is sandwiched in between a lot more minutes of sucking. His confidence is shot.
Reggie is taking the banner and running along with it.

That's really what it is. From the interviews and articles I read about him after the summer league, the dude seemed pretty fragile. It's possible that Pop's effusive praise of him during training camp was because he wanted to build Simmons' confidence. It's not a doubly bad thing for Simmons to have confidence issues, because he's GOING to make mistakes playing the way he does. He needs to have a short memory like Manu does. I think he lacks some critical skills to be a real NBA player, but if he could even fix his mindset, he'd at least be able to have some good moments.

If Pop had cared about shooting so much, he would have lobbied for a decent shooter to come into camp instead of picking up detritus like Butler and Jimmer. Miami Big Three. Started off cold as ice for first quarter of the season.
Cavs Full roster of pick 1s started off as if they were going for 0-82.
Both teams basically "should have" won the ring in their respective first year despite being totally laughable.

The big difference is the Cavs and the Heat play in the Eastern Conference. Any Eastern conference team with LeBron pretty much has a free pass to at least the Eastern Conference Finals. There's not much room for error in the Western Conference, play poorly for a month and you can find yourself fighting for the 8th playoff spot with 4+ teams in the last week of the season.

Why do you think we're going to have "big shooting issues"? I miss Marco too, but he made 1.4 3s a game last year. Correct observation. It is preseason and Pop likely has asked the team to limit 3 point shooting.

He shouldn't be jumping high as his reach is already high. Getting too high in a jump shot is actually bad for consistency.
That's why guys like rose and Westbrook brick shots all the time. Shorter guys have to jump to get to that sweet point.

Parker wasn't even trying. But a good sign was his mid range jumper was falling last night.
Simmons On the other hand was downright horrible. Pop has a lot of film to go over with Simmons after last night's game. Simmons isn't getting cut. He is the most athletic guy on the team and he shown he is a capable defender, better than Butler or Williams. But he made a lot of mistakes last night. Remember, it's a learning curve for this guy right now. And he has a long way to go before he becomes a standard player in the Spurs rotation at this point.

The team needs mire quality passing from their perimeter players. I saw a couple of successful PnR in the highlights between Aldridge and Anderson. They don't even play or practice together much, but already Anderson is running some PnR with LMA better than guys in the first unit. When Aldridge is in the second unit, guys actively look for him. The first unit is out of whack. The only real passer, talented passer in that unit is Tim.

I'm not a fan of people using +/- to try and analyze basketball games and players. But there are times that it has some meaning. Jonathan Simmons was a staggering -29 in this game. And he played right at 20 minutes, which means that the Spurs just got the living shit kicked out of them when he was on the floor.
It's usually a combination of players, but the next worst for the Spurs was Kyle Anderson at -18 in 24 minutes. I know it's pre-season, but that's bad enough to just say, "HOLY SHIT Simmons was bad!" You can't always learn much from +/- but you really have to dig through some box scores to find other -29 nights.

Anderson spent a lot of minutes next to Simmons though which affected his +/- like you mention, and when Simmons sat and Williams came from the bench, the team made a bit of a run and stopped the bleeding. He had his own bad plays in jumpshots he forced or missed badly, but he's not a star to overcome Simmons' bad play IMO. Simmons bad defense also caused breakdowns in the team's defense.
