San Antonio shedding "fat" image by hitting the gym

For years, San Antonio residents have lived with the label of being a "fat city." Now it seems people are doing something about it.

Around 16.4 percent of San Antonio residents have health club memberships, making the Alamo City one of the top cities in the United States for gym members.

The International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association on Thursday released the top 25 states and metropolitan areas with the highest rates of health club memberships.

San Antonio ranked 21st on the list, besting even the state average membership rate of 14.6 percent.

San Diego ranked first on the list, with 24.2 percent of people in that town belonging to a gym. Denver is second, at 23.2 percent, followed by Columbus, Ohio; Minneapolis; and Seattle.

The only other Texas city on the list is Dallas, which ranked 12th on the list, with 17.8 percent of people living in that market holding a health club membership.

"We applaud every American that makes the important decision to improve their personal health through physical activity," John McCarthy, a spokesman for the association, says.

"It's been nearly a decade since the U.S. Surgeon General's Report on Physical Activity and Health called on Americans to make regular exercise a permanent part of their lives, and the rising number of health club members in the U.S. can serve as a strong indication that the messages from that report are still resonating," McCarthy says.

In the last year alone, the San Antonio area has experienced a tremendous amount of growth in new fitness centers being built.

Spectrum Health Clubs is currently building two new multi-million dollar fitness centers in San Antonio -- bringing the total number of clubs it owns to 11.

In addition, Eden Prairie, Minn.-based Life Time Fitness is in the process of building a 150,000-square-foot health club in North San Antonio. It is slated to open in 2006.

San Ramon, Calif.-based 24 Hour Fitness also indicated that it had its sights on the San Antonio market.

Gym memberships aren't like hollywood video memberships where theshit is free.

Most places charge a lot for a monthly membership.

If I have a netflix membership, you best damn believe I'm using it. Something with gym memberships.

And SW is right, what about the people who don't have gym meberships but still exercise daily.

A lot of people have gym memberships they don't use. I'd say that more than half of the people that I knew who belong to Spectrum when I did, never used it.

I had mine for 4 years and only used it about once a month at a certain point. That point being when I weighed well over 200 pounds.

When I did go every day for a couple of months you see peopel show up for 30 minutes, mingle, and split. Most people can afford to do that off Prue Rd. so it's not like their scraping pennies together for a gym membership.

The problem with Spectrum is that 1) They automatically deduct it out of your checking so they're getting their money either way and 2) You have to give them 3 months notice when you want to quit.

So they get their $$$

Well, atleast the last month was paid for.

I stopped going there specifically about a year ago when they closed the location off Evers and 410 with the basketball court. I didn't lik ethe location at Prue too much. I just work at UTSA now.

Does Bally's and Gold's use contracts?

What does gym membership have to do with losing weight?

How many of the very numerous grossly/morbidly obese people, for whom SA is famous, join thes gyms?

I have Ballys, and yes...it's a contract. I paid mine off a couple of years ago and pay $7/mo maintenance for life or until I decide I don't want it anymore. :)

And some find going to the gym more motivating. I do. I don't trust myself to do my own thing at home...it's too easy to get distracted by all of the other things that have to be done.

Also don't forget all the students who go to the University's gym.. It's already paid for in the tuition.

...Although I don't see much fat people at UTSA.

:lmao i have a gym membership that I pay $30 months to............and I def slacked off this summer and probably went there 1 day for the month of August. So I can be the first to attest to the fact that jsut because people have gym memberships, doesn't mean they'll go.

....Although I am now back on the gym bandwagon for the month of September :)
