Highlights from a Nov, 5, 2015, NASA briefing on the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) mission's findings on the Martian atmosphere. MAVEN has identified the process that appears to have played a key role in the transition of the Martian climate from an early, warm and wet environment that might have supported surface life to the cold, arid planet Mars is today.

So...since there is and has been water on Mars.....was there once a magnetic field protecting Mars too?

Do you know what produces a magnetic field? For these large bodies? Therein lies the most likely answer from early Mars to Mars right now.

Why don't you tell us your theory?

Why don't you tell us your theory?
Magnetic fields are created by the movement of charged particles within a planet. This movement occurs because of the presence of liquid rock (magma). Mars is smaller than the Earth.
Can you take it from here using reasonable mechanisms?

Both planets started hot. Mars cooled faster to the point where it no longer has significant flow of magma to create a magnetic field. So now take it from here, maybe? It's not that wild. It's a very straightforward idea. As a hint, why does the moon have NO atmosphere AND NO magnetic field?
Is there a fruitbat theory I am missing here with your original post?
