Solid list. I feel like people just robotically/reflexively call LeBron the best player in the league at this point, but Davis looks like that guy now. The guy is an absolute freak with near-GOAT talent, and he started to realize that last year.
Durant is making a case for being the 3rd-best scorer of all time after Mike and Kareem. As for Kawhi, I can't stand him, but he's balling after clearly holding out on us last year. His playmaking has improved too.

:lmao At James at 6 because he went to a franchise and situation you despise. Coming off an all-time postseason, until he's no longer capable of ramping it up to that level, he's clearly 1 . . .
Tier 1: James
Tier 2: Curry, Durant, Harden, Davis, Leonard
Tier 3: Jokic, Paul, Antetokounmpo, Westbrook, Embiid
If Paul can't revert to previous form, he finally falls out of the top 10. But as a long time member, he's earned the benefit of the doubt until further notice.

My list was a combination of now + what I expect by the end of the season..Davis has actually been pretty bad lately and I wouldn't be surprised if he wants a trade soon, but I think he has the highest peak of any player in the league right now..
LeBron is just so bad on defense and the overall drop-off has to be imminent with all that mileage and a bad supporting cast..

That's what I figured when looking at your post, but yeah I can already see some of the drop-off for LeBron. He's not beating guys off the drive nearly as much as he used to and he's not even pretending to try on D anymore. Davis has been meh to start though... didn't see that coming

Curry is the most dominant player in the NBA currently. It's his era. He defined the current style of play, and he's the prototypical player for that style.
Kawhi could have been #1, but he bitched out, so that's all over now.

Update February' 2019..
1- Lebron: Until proven otherwise-- possibly this year's playoffs-- the crown is still his..
2- KD : still think he is tad more important/valuable for playoffs basketball than Steph who gets the edge here over 82-game season.
3- Curry: see above for explanation.
4- Giannis: Still can't shoot. So his "unguardability" still questionable in the playoffs, but he's proving how good and uplifting (to his team) he is with elite coaching..
5- Harden: Meh not falling again for gaudy numbers in the regular season on a D'Antoni-coached team. Still an offensive juggernaut..
6- Kawhi : His drastic defensive slippage is truly worrisome. Health-wise, he is the least reliable superstar in league; yes more fargile than AD (he will likely never play more than 75 games in season ONCE in his career :lol). Combined with his failure to improve his play-making (you could argue it got worse) this slide is warranted. Looking at his paltry advanced stats, current Kawhi is basically a more efficient version of Nuggets Melo.
7- Davis: His inability to win enough basketball games is starting to look awkward..probably the wrong era of basketball for him, but still..
8- Paul George: Biggest leap this season..A more consistent two-way monster that leaves you wonderig what could have been for PG without that gruesome leg injury.
9- Embiid: Best big man in the league
10- Jokic: Only defense or lack there of will limit his ceiling.

1. LeBron - it's the last year for sure, but until the playoffs come along the crown is still his his.
2a. KD
2b. Steph - I agree with the conclusion regarding these two as well. Curry is what makes the GS team go, but KD still seems to have a more unique talent. I do go back and forth though.
4. Embiid - He, not AD, is the best big man in the league and is about as complete as anyone to have played the role. He needs to carry the Sixers into the finals now, but the talent is all there.
5. Giannis - Unless he can show that this style of bball can win in the playoffs, I am still skeptical. If the keeps dunking on everyone in the playoffs, he might just be number one. I'd still vote him for MVP though.
6. Harden - Sometimes I feel the Rockets are the the ones overusing him, sometimes I feel like he is the problem with dominating the ball so much. He's a monster of a scorer, but he needs to win a big series very soon to validate his career. If he knocks even OKC this year, he'll get major props.
7. Paul George - Incredible year, he's bypassed Kawhi for sure.
8. AD - He's 25 and has won only one playoff series. He's a great talent but he needs to make a great decision in the summer or else that's all people will remember him for.
Kyrie, Westbrook, Kawhi - not sure how to rank them right now, they have had up and down seasons the last couple of years. Bar Westbrook, they have injury concerns as well. They wanted to be the MAN in their teams, now they need to show they deserve that and I am not sure anyone is quite living up to it.
Jokic - I don't know, seems a bit like a product of the system, but we'll see more in the playoffs.
Doncic, KP - they are coming for them all next year.

Yeah he simply doesn’t need to take jumpers. When he does it’s actually a pretty smooth looking shot, there’s just no point when his penetration is that hard to defend.

Tier 1: James.
Tier 2: Curry, Durant, Harden, Antetokounmpo, Davis.

They have been this season and considering Westbrook is now 30, was always highly reliant on freakish athleticism and hasn't looked the same since his 4th knee surgery last off season, there's reason to think it could be permanent.

I know his conditioning/groin is not 100%, but these the last couple of weeks is the first time I saw Lebron try to carry a team on his back and fail spectacularly at it (it is not like he faced the Warriors every night, tbh).

Pedigree/reputation factors in these type of rankings, tbh.. Sample size is still not big enough, but If Lebron still look like another empty stats guy in the first two months of next season (he's gonna get all the rest he needed), I will be fine with knocking him out of Top 5.
But, yeah it happens to everyone, Duncan lost half step at the end of 2008, but the first big sign of decline happened in 2010-11 at 34-35....

Duncan aged well after his initial decline because he accepted a complimentary role(only being an offensive focal point in matchup advantages)..one of his biggest strengths as a player was humility and self-awareness..
I can't see LeBron doing that..I don't think he'll be like Kobe embarrassing himself, but I can't picture him not dominating the ball..

:tu He's still bitter that he signed with the Lakers, plus being an ageist is part of his shtick.
It's one thing to put Curry, Durant, Harden, Antetokounmpo, Davis in a tier with James, but to put them clearly ahead is prisoner of the moment talk.
This isn't the first time people were questioning him and all he did was end any debate from the '16 Finals through last season. There's never been a player who's maintained elite standing for so long, so if anyone has earned the benefit of the doubt, it's him.

Now that Lebron has officially declined, Curry is pretty clearly the best player in the World, tbh. I don't care if most of the top 10 guys beat him one on one. In 5 v 5 basketball, he's the most impactful player by far.
Durant is more impactful because when he wants he can play defense. He is basically Curry at 7 feet you can't guard him and his help defense is pretty good. You never see teams trying to switch to have Durant guard them like they do Steph.

Klay Thompson goes several spots ahead of Curry for his defense, tbh. Curry is just a hell of a shooter. He's not the soundest point guard and he's just a gambler on defense. Klay Thompson is Ray Allen on offense and prime Danny Green/Bruce Bowen on defense.
Then you have Iverson-like guys like Kyrie Irving who barely qualify for the top 25 due to their inefficiency. DeRozan isn't top 25 IMO.
Hate Draymond Green if you want but he's definitely top 20, he's the rich-man's Shawn Marion/Dennis Rodman of this generation. He does everything except volume score, and he can score if necessary.

Curry has been overrated since day one. Remember Curry had plenty of chances to "carry" the Warriors with the Bogut/David Lee teams. They usually won 30-35 games a season. He's just a great shooter and really nothing else. There's nobody to really compare to him unfortunately, except for maybe Jerry West which sucks because there were no threes in West's time. Curry is a heck of a shooter and a great decoy, but I rank the players in terms of how greatly they help the team win.
The Warriors today would be worse off without Thompson than Curry. Thompson is arguably a better shooter than Curry (at least as good) AND is a top 3 perimeter defender. He would be Kawhi on offense too if he wasn't surrounded by Curry, Green, Durant etc and the triangle-esque pick and roll heavy offense.

None of that matters when a simple screen for Curry has three opposing players running to him while his teammates can play 4 on 2.

:cry
:lmao The media just loves him because he screwed the Spurs and was traded to their latest darlings, the Raptors. Statistically, it's his 3rd best playoffs and things change. I've got him in the 2nd tier because of the combination of lack of durability, defensive decline and inability to make his teammates better (1B for most important aspect of the sport).

Sure he did. You just don't like Antetokounmpo because you know he's better. Of course he's going to live at the line. That's what happens when you're physically unstoppable, in an era where they allow virtually no contact on the perimeter. At least he's not some stiff getting away with constant push offs, so that he can shoot uncontested mid rangers.
