The good:

Kawhi absolutely wrecked the Nuggets.

Simmons, terrific game.

Some good moments in the game from Diaw/West.

Tony providing scoring and helping Kawhi out a bit with the scoring load at a time when the team was slumping offensively except for Kawhi.

Anderson terrific defense. That he posted a large +/- was in large part due to this.

Boban. Good and exciting minutes from him to start the game. Altered a lot of shots and got OBoards.

The bad:

The TO at one point were killing us. Tony was a part of it, but so was Mills and Danny. Guys who are in the rotation. The new guys got some too, but you have to hold the veterans to a higher standard.

Lamarcus. Bad defensively and could not get a rhythm going. He's off, but more likely seems like he can't execute what Pop wants. Pop saying he's not coaching him, sounds like CIA Pop.

Ray? ?It would have been a perfect game to see something from him, for sure at one point Pop was trotting two guard lineups. Maybe the extra time went to Simmons bc Pop wanted to get a good look at him (with good reason, Simmons has a lot of potential TBH), but its a bit concerning for Ray at this point that Boban, Simmons, Kyle played signficant minutes in this game (meaning minutes when the game was on the line), and he did not.

Danny Green is that guy who Cleveland waived. He's not the superstar Danny Green Finals 3pt record holder. This is his psyche I am referring to. He's still unsure of his freedom on the court to do things except shoot the 3. He's great when he's not the focus on the defense, but when people close out on him (like we want them to), he typically kicks to a post player or around the horn, but lately the new guys have been out of position so Danny gets caught up after his defender closes out and the lane is blocked by someone out of their position. That's when improvisation ensues and the Spurs, like all other teams, aren't that great at improvising. It always looks improvised, but it's choreographed pretty well most times.

And he showed more confidence; he thought he belonged on the floor playing against the Nuggets, instead of being excited to be in the NBA. I think with some help from Manu, this guy might make it now. I think Pop must be pleased with his progress, too, making a move for another wing even less likely. Pop may also think that the team has enough ball-handling (actual and potential) among Patty, Kyle, Simmons and even Ray that we could weather short storms without Tony or Manu. IMHO.

Don't think these will come at a sell the future cost. I'm talking cutting someone and signing a vet, or worst case trading McCallum and salaries like Bonner to make numbers work. Pop is very strict. But he has that luxury when he has a lot of talent. This was the 4th game Simmons has actually played with San Antonio. He showed big improvement over his short earlier stints. This wasn't D-league or SL, it was the NBA. Even if it was Denver. But Denver is far from the worst team in the league. Yeah, i get pretty pumped to see the young guys perform like tonight. Don't think these will come at a sell the future cost. I'm talking cutting someone and signing a vet, or worst case trading McCallum and salaries like Bonner to make numbers work. Looking at who's out there though, there really aren't any guys I'm that intrigued by who aren't 100 years old / aren't chuckers.

He's not playing for anyone else. He'll be a trade/retire and would join the FO / become an assistant coach practice body. They traded Bowen at the end of his days. Never say never.

Pop is very strict. But he has that luxury when he has a lot of talent. This was the 4th game Simmons has actually played with San Antonio. He showed big improvement over his short earlier stints. This wasn't D-league or SL, it was the NBA. Even if it was Denver. But Denver is far from the worst team in the league. Yeah, i get pretty pumped to see the young guys perform like tonight. I don't think we are too far off to root for these guys because when Danny came in all he could do was shoot and had to work on a whole lot of stuff to stick in the league. Neal came in from Europe and was old by NBA terms. Baynes was a rescue project and also older and has stuck around in the league. I am excited that we have young guys to develop at the end of the bench instead of really marginal projects that have no upside whatsoeer like Daye/Ayers. These two young guys have upside.

Really concerned about Ray at this point, he is not looking like he will stick with us. Just how much more time Kyle/Simmons have gotten than Ray is a concern at this point. Even Boban has played in real games at this point.

Ray may have the lowest ceiling/potential with us is what I am thinking, but it could be early.

Ray is really becoming a serious mystery to me. A guy who has started quite a few games in the league (even if they were for Sactown) who RC really praised, becomes a non-entity? Especially when there have been times that Patty has been atrocious? I don't get it. Even back when Patty was best known for his towel-waving on the end of the bench, I bet he got more court time than Ray has.

Yeah, that was a little irony. But I like the potential of that duo, and I hope we see those kinds of lays for years to come. I like this Simmons guy, and I really like thinking he could be a nice part of the Spurs TNG. :toast

It has clearly been by Pop's design, else he would have been chewing on Danny and showing him the end of the bench.I know people want to discuss things and it doesnt make for stimulating conversation to say "be patient" but people need to....be patient. Just because something isnt working now doesnt mean it wont work. Green is quick and athletic, too quick and athletic to be just a three point shooter. When what he is trying to do starts coming together we'll be that much better.

Same goes with Patty. Just because hes off now doesnt mean thats where hes going to stay....but people know that yet type anyways.

Exactly. Pop wants to be the best team at the end of the season, RS is glorified practice for them (up to a point, of course)

For me, LMA is a mixed bag. He is better on D than I expected, and better at rebounding - especially on the offensive end. As a Spurs fan I am loving his offensive rebounding. He and the team haven't meshed well yet in the offense, but it will get better. I think we would better off pairing LMA and Diaw and Timmy with DWest most of the time, and I expect us to see those pairings more and more.

And frankly think is why he is struggling with his offensive game, because he comes on this multiple championship winning team, that succeeded with ball movement, with a game that revolves around him being the go to guy where they feed him the ball and everyone stands around waiting for him to score.
