View Full Version : Lakers: League executives, players wince watching this Kobe Bryant

Over at the Los Angeles Times Mike Bresnahan and Broderick Turner got a number of sources to wince about Kobe for a story — except nobody wanted their name attached to attacking a legend of the game.

“Man, I don’t want to see Kobe go out like this, looking this bad and not able to do what he once could do,” said a retired guard who faced Bryant. “He doesn’t have anything else to prove to anybody. He was one of the greatest. I know he’s owed that $25 million, but he should just walk away now. He ain’t got it anymore.”

“He’s one of the few players in NBA history to have gotten everything possible out of his body. Now his body has nothing left to give,” (an Eastern Conference executive) said. “But that’s life in the NBA, in professional sports. At some point, the body just can’t do it anymore and Kobe’s body can’t do it anymore.”

One West scout said Bryant looked “disinterested” at times. A current player in the West went a step further.

“Yeah, I’ve seen him play and it’s disgusting,” he said. “He’s one of the best of all time. But he really hasn’t played that much in the last two or three years. He’s got nothing left. It’s sad to watch because he used to be so great, and I mean great.”

Agree but uts hatdest to watch as a Laker fan. Want to see him drop a 30 5 and 5 and then quit. Not sure if he can though would take a fluky 3 pt game ...

He's shooting a jarringly low 31.1%, which puts him 122nd out of 122 players who qualify for NBA stat-keeping with enough attempts this season. Bryant is shooting an equally damaging 19.5% from three-point range, last out of 103 NBA stat qualifiers. He has yet to make half his shots in a game and his trademark fly-through-the-air days are gone. He does not have a dunk this season.

Lakers fans are despondent, wanting to remember the player who scored 81 points against Toronto, 62 through three quarters against Dallas and captured the league MVP award in 2008 and NBA Finals MVP awards in 2009 and 2010.

They don't want to see what Bryant has become — a salary cap-killing shadow of his former self.

He makes $25 million in the last year of his contract, part of a two-year, $48.5-million extension generously given by the Lakers in November 2013 before Bryant returned from a torn Achilles' tendon.

Wonder if he will ever have that kind decent final outing in him..It is beyond doubt now that he has no business playing beyond Game 82 of this season assuming he stays healthy..If he does, then he probably deserve all the mocking he brought on himself..He has had a Barkley-type of bad game aging combined with poor health only that Chuck listened to his body and called it quit at 36..

Barkley from same LA times article..

Somebody asked me how I knew it was time to retire," Charles Barkley, a Hall of Fame player, said in a phone interview. "I said because I was pump-faking. So now I see Kobe and he's pump-faking because he's scared they are going to block his shot. That's what the pump-faking is. People are knocking your shot into the stands.
"Kobe can't get open shots. He can't go around people to get layups. It's hard to make contested shots."

It's been beautiful to watch. Hopefully he stays healthy all year so his numbers can go down. It's worse than Wizard MJ, Raptor Hakeem, Orlando Ewing, and Boston Shaq combined tbh....mostly because it's his own fanbase turning against him :lol

Depends. If he retires after this year, its all good.

If he keeps going, he will start showing that rust.

Kobe isnt walking away from his $25 million now that he flushed his brand name down the drain. I love the Lakers till the end but Kobe has fucked this team over almost as much as he has elevated them

I know what you're getting at. Whatever it takes to keep the draft pick....

But you weren't talking 6th seed nonsense at the beginning of the year either.

Fucker is gonna lose me money again. I bet he's real proud of that 5-14, too. His standards are that low.

This article on LA Times was nail in coffin after the torrent of bad press and twitter commentary..Probably his PR team told him let's cut to chase and dilute the negative tide of his coverage by announcing now an already made decision..
